Live plants are definitely worth the extra few dollars! Mine created a more natural feel and helps cycle everything out. I check my ammonia (which create Nitrates and what not) weekly, and haven't had to do water changes since I've had them! WORTH THE MONEY!

Aqueon food is actually really bad for the fish. The ingredients are almost the exact opposite of what the betta actually needs.

My mom taught me to put my betta in a vase. I had to learn the proper care on my own, and then argue with her about the proper care once I discovered the internet. Thank you for teaching your child the proper care! Wonderful mother. I volunteer at the zoo now that I am 18, my favorite job is teaching the children his age how we give them water twice daily, record their diet, etc. It's amazing to see the faces in the older kids when I ask for help with a leopard gecko, and they tell me they are getting one soon. It's even more amazing when the parents talk to them how they'll do the same thing one day. Kids are great.

If you're 'on a budget' you shouldn't be getting live animals. Animals cost lots of money, and you must buy extras suck as heaters and have extra money for medication. If you want to properly care for fish, you must have enough money to spoil them.
Jayla White
Jayla White - 6 years ago
Libbie H so if people don’t spend a lot of money they can’t have animals? That doesn’t make sense. You can still take care of animals while saving money

Thank you so much for being so responsible and taking proper care of your fish. This is going to do wonders for Carson as he gets bigger. You're not only teaching him how to take care of a betta, but you're teaching him not to go off of hearsay, and to actually do a good amount of research into whatever animal he may wish to get. Good job!

Great info.! I'm surprised you mentioned craigslist for aquarium tank because not of people I've talked to thought of it. Craiglist, thrift store, and online second-hand app are great places to look for aquarium tanks and supplies. I got a 10-gallon tank w/hood + lights and in new condition for only $8 on CL! The same set up would have cost $30+ at the store!

Do u have a heater. Bettas are more prone to illnesses in colder water. I've seen them at Walmart for $13 (that's cheap for a heater) grrreat choice at petsmart has really cheap heaters but don't buy them because they are bad quality and might heat up your tank top hot.

Brooks Wilson
Brooks Wilson - 8 years ago
I believe the tank is 2.5 gallons and the filter came with the tank. However, it's best you get a 5 gallon tank with a filter and a heater, since those are the main things a betta needs. Look for '5 gallon aquarium kit' that comes with a heater.

This is something we need more of, parents teaching their children about responsible pet ownership! Great job!! My 7 year old son has two betta fish and a hamster and he has learned so much by caring for them, not only about what their needs are but also about the responsibility you take on when you decide to bring a pet into your life. Seeing your little boy, who's adorable by the way, talk about what his betta needs and why I couldn't help but think of how many adults don't know these things. Best of luck to you, him, and "blue fishy".

Feed your betta once every week so they don't get bloated 2 times a day is way more then enough fish don't know when to stop eating at least once every 3 days is top every other day is to much too my bettas are fine eating once a week
Voeris

I think 3 pellets total in a day is ideal. 2 in the morning, one at night. And one day a week for fasting/peas.

Bettas have a stomach the size of their eye. They should only eat 1x a day 1-2 pellets and the also should fast 1x a week to help prevent swim bladder.
Brooks Wilson
Brooks Wilson - 8 years ago
2x a day with 2-3 pellets depending on the pellet size. You're right about fasting, though.

Bettas also need a heater if your house isn't 72/82° F!
Brooks Wilson
Brooks Wilson - 8 years ago
+Lugia Chan Of course they're not! I don't know from where does +JustWhy think that heaters can kill fish. If there's something his/her fish will die is from temperature fluctuation.

Why do you keep your fish in a bowl?
Eternal Skyy Costumes
Eternal Skyy Costumes - 8 years ago
+Brooks Wilson You slowly adjust the fish to the new water temp from inside a bowl, it accomodates the fish pretty well. I never had a fish get hurt or die from a heater. They're not tedious at all.
Brooks Wilson
Brooks Wilson - 8 years ago
+JustWhy Heaters can be tedious to operate? The shock can kill the fish? Do you even know what a temperature shock is?
Eternal Skyy Costumes
Eternal Skyy Costumes - 8 years ago
+AnimeBabeRockstar With a temperature reader in a room that is 72, it will read 62. At 82 it will read 72. Also every day is a different reading and temperature, therefore the fluctuation happening in the room is stressful for the fish. Room temp will never match water temp, it's why standing water is always colder than the air temp.
Cassey M.
Cassey M. - 8 years ago
My fish lasted for 6 years. They do not need a heater. The average water temperature is 72-82 F. The room temperature will match water temperature eventually. Science helps. I'm not sure what they are teaching in schools nowadays. Heaters can kill your fish since they can be tedious to operate due to fish can have temperature shock..which can kill your fish!
Eternal Skyy Costumes
Eternal Skyy Costumes - 8 years ago
+Sam I was just explaining why they need heaters so the original poster and others could read, please don't feel as if i'm degrading you D:
Sam
Sam - 8 years ago
+Lugia Chan (EternalSkyy) k get off my ass lmao
Eternal Skyy Costumes
Eternal Skyy Costumes - 8 years ago
+Sam They need a heater EVEN if the house is 72/82. Water in a tank is 10 degrees colder than the air, plus with vents in the house and constant air flow, temperatures fluctuate like crazy. 1-2 degrees means a lot of harm for a fish's immunity. A heater is needed no matter what unless you are in thailand where they lived in the wild in large rice paddies.

Your DITL videos are very warming to the heart! I think so many people love your videos because you exude positivity and energy and kindness. I know I do. I don't even have small children anymore, and yours is the only exception to not watching child-rearing help videos anymore. Well, I must admit it's hard to resist Carson! =) But of course how you organize around the house is great...and I would love to see how you organize your time. You are great with spaces, and for me, time is the thing that gets away from me. So, I would love to see how you organize this and the tips you offer. =)

As a betta lover, i'm SO happy that you are teaching your son how to properly take care of these fish. I was insanely impressed with the extra add on of knowing that bettas need silk plants.. There are so many parents who dont care about these poor fish its so refreshing to see how you are teaching your son about animals, responsibilities, and the proper care for bettas.. and on a budget too! This leaves no excuse for those who can not take care of their fish properly..

Please don't think you have to buy filters or oxygenate the water with a Betta -- they go to the top for air (like a dolphin or whale, except without the blowhole). Goldfish will die in a few days in a bowl of water, but not a Betta. I always kept a Betta in my kitchen on the bar while my kids lived at home, and the longest one I had lived 8 1/2 years. :-) Once a month, I scooped the fish out of his bowl with a net into a smaller bowl of his dirty fish water, then I emptied his bowl into the sink, soaped everything up, rinsed it off, filled it up (added water conditioner while filling), then caught him and placed him back in the bowl. Our blood worms lasted FOREVER because we would only give him like 2 tiny slivers per day or he would bloat up and muck up his bowl really bad. Over a span of about 20 years, we only had 3 or 4 Bettas.
Brooks Wilson
Brooks Wilson - 8 years ago
Wait, what? You soaped the tank? Do you even know how dangerous soap is to fish? Do you even know anything about the nitrogen cycle? I bet you even kept him in a 0.5 gallon you sick freak...

I work in a pet shop in England. A lot of my customers give in to children wanting to have a pet and get a fish without educating them first, it usually ends badly for the fishy. This is my favourite pet video on YouTube. Thank you for showing that fish have feelings to

i won't lie, i was super worried when i say 'fish care on a budget' because some people take the easy route with pets, especially small ones because they don't think their little lives mean enough, but gosh, i'm SO HAPPY to have finished this video! you did such a good job, especially teaching the kiddo about the proper habitat. i smiled so big when you made it a point to say the cup was too small for the fish. great job!

I came here after watching Cullen and Katie's vlog about her parents cocker spaniel Barnsley passing away it was so sad but Carson cheered me right up. I have a 9 year old Boston terrier and his brother belongs to my cousin and his family the boys love getting together for play dates and I also have a ten year old cat she is a calico/tabby mix plus three stray long haired cats that like to come and visit me everyday two are black and one day is gray they are still babies just under a year old.

Hello Kathryn, you should try Insect Lore Live Butterfly Garden from amazon, it is wonderful and very educational for the kids. you get 5-6 live caterpillars, a habitat for them, the food and instructions included. it's not expensive and it is fun to watch them metamorphose into batterflies and eventually set them free. it might be better to do it in the spring though so that they can survive. my 4yo loved it so much. thank you for your videos, I m always inspired ;)
Jennlewis16

A good tip if you have different fish that need places to hide, instead of getting expensive castles and such just go to a craft store and get small terra cotta pots for around 50c to 1$. Turn them on their side and bury them halfway. Perfect fish hideout! You could also get larger ones and break them for a cool look. Decorations look like crap after a few months anyway there's no sense in loosing an arm over them.

When my son was around 7 we bought a guinea pig to teach him the responsibilities (and fun) of being a pet owner. Unbeknownst to us our guinea pig was pregnant . Yep, a couple months later she had 3 babies. We let him keep one & we were able to find good homes for the other 2.....

Hi. Carson is so adorable. Just something that's of my concern. It's not safe to leave the fish food and water conditioner at a place where it's easily reachable by Carson. Do you keep it away from him or you trained him not to eat/drink them? If you trained him, how did you do it? Thx

+DoltOnaDimeFamily Hey, you probably don't know this, but betta fish are tropical, they need to be kept at a stable temperature over 76 degrees fahrenheit, you can buy a very cheap new 25 or 50 watt heater with free shipping for about $5 on eBay, I have 3 running one that has held up for over a year. Also, all fish, not just bettas need frequent and consistent water changes to keep ammonia down, 50% once or twice a week generally works out well.
DoItOnaDimeFAMILY
DoItOnaDimeFAMILY - 8 years ago
+Aly Homewood Thanks for sharing your fish care info, Aly!! This is great to know. Yes, the 50% change is an awesome idea! I used to do this with my fish growing up, and the full tank clean is so much easier. Will look into the heater :)

I got my first betta when I was 17, I loved him so much!! Hoping to get my son one soon, I think he would love it.
My only concern is him wanting to hold it and trying to get him to understand that the fishy is not like a kitty or doggy.
DoItOnaDimeFAMILY
DoItOnaDimeFAMILY - 8 years ago
+Tabitha Jean I thought the same thing, too Tabitha! I was surprised by how much he understood that the fish only stays in the water. Bettas are great because they are dueling fish (the males are) so they will follow your finger on the tank and puff up their fins, and it's fun to watch!

Oh, I love Betta fish! I got one for my daughter when she was three and he lived happily with 8 zebra fish for over 3 years. I am so glad you've a decent sized tank, I get so mad when they are kept in small tanks. Have Carson hold a little hand mirror up to the glass, so the Betta can see themselves, and he'll dance. ( this isn't really what he's doing, haha, but I couldn't tell my daughter that.) You can get them to eat out of a spoon as well. Good job mama! Xx
