Tank Setup! | How to Set Up the Tetra 3 Gallon Halfmoon Aquarium

Today's video is the setup my betta Campbell's 3 Gallon Tetra Halfmoon aquarium. He spent a night in a 1 gallon hospital/quarantine tank, and now he is getting the upgrade he needs to be a happy & healthy betta fish. I have a detailed unboxing of this tank on my channel for those interested. My female betta Journey uses the exact the same tank, and has since late March (2016). The unboxing process in today's video was brief as the video was already quite long, and as I have unboxed this tank in the past in full detail, I thought I wouldn't show the whole process again. Here is the link to the full unboxing! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ha0_EuJ0e6s I repurchased this tank because my overall opinion of it was good. It's affordable and convenient (how it comes in a set) and I have no issues with the filter or air stone being dangerously strong. Also, I'm familiar with it, making tank setup and maintenance easy. Another point towards the repurchase of this tank was I liked how the tank was tall- so I could let future live plants grow up with less weekly pruning. Campbell's tank is set up on the small Hemnes bedside table from IKEA. Here is the link to the table: http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/70121230/ It works perfectly as a aquarium stand for tanks between 2.5 and 3 gallons. I wouldn't recommend it for tanks over 3.5 gallons, though, as it may not be strong enough. Any more questions? Ask below! Journey's 1 Year Adoptiversary is this coming Monday! (8/22/16) A special video dedicated to her will be uploaded next Thursday. New Video Every Thursday. BetterBetta if you feel comfortable with doing that then go ahead
BetterBetta
BetterBetta - 7 years ago
Whether or not you read 5 gallons or 2.5 gallons as the minimum, you can do research for hours and due to the fact the opinions in the fish community vary greatly, your results could differ from someone else's based on the websites you choose to use or the videos you watch. I've heard 1, 2, 2.5, 3, 5, AND 10 as minimums for betta tanks before. From my research, I've seen 2.5 as the most common minimum chosen by fishkeepers, but I've certainly seen other minimums repeatedly suggested (like 5 gallons). While I personally believe 2.5 is a acceptable sized tank for a betta and I am fully comfortable in my decision to keep my betta in tanks that are 2.5 gallons, it doesn't necessarily mean you have to agree - we're all entitled to our own opinion of what we feel is best for our fish! :)
Grant The Gamer
Grant The Gamer - 7 years ago

Have you tried using any different filter media in this tank? I'm not a big fan of the bio-bag filter cartridge you're supposed to use with it. And thanks for all of your videos - I recently asked my boyfriend for a betta for my birthday without knowing all that goes into it. I had to buy a new tank for him, I'm treating him for some mildly torn fins right now with aquarium salt and water changes. I thought I was adding too much to my tank until I watched your video saying they prefer lots of plants to feel secure, so that's exactly what I did!

I have the same tank and have a couple questions. Does you filter have bubbles coming out of the top and how bright is the led ?
BetterBetta
BetterBetta - 7 years ago
I found the filter only bubbles at the top if I turn the air on all the way. I found that adjusting the air flow to be a little lower helped that problem. My LED isn't very bright, it looks great at night but I wouldn't use live plants with it  unless you get a separate light. It's more for appearance than function :)

BetterBetta

+Michelle Williams While this tank is fully live planted now, I will say that bettas like lots of places to hide to feel protected - so I was putting lots of ornaments in to try to create that effect. I don't see this tank as overcrowded, it has a different atmosphere as other YouTubers though. They aren't wrong, but I prefer my tanks this way. As this tank is 3 gallons, any water space taken up the ornaments would still leave the tank to have around 2.5 gallons of swimming space- which equals the minimum tank size recommended for a betta- so they should still have plenty of room to swim! Hopefully this answers your question :)

BetterBetta
BetterBetta - 7 years ago
+Allyson Harper If your filter flow isn't turned on all the way (with the knob in the tubing that connects it to the pump), I'd try turning it up. It may be bubbling because there isn't enough power to push the water out enough, causing it to bubble. Mine did that a couple times, and when I turned it up, it went away. :)

Oops, I'm sorry, you commented this exact comment on two of my videos, and I assumed it was a computer error that caused it to appear twice in my dashboard- this was a response to my "How to Clean A Fishbowl Safely and Quick' video. However, the reason I put ornaments in this tank is for the same reason I did in my bowls. The 'empty' tanks look very nice, but they actually aren't the best setup for a betta.
BetterBetta
BetterBetta - 7 years ago
This video is over a year old and the bettas have been out of these bowls for MONTHS. I will say, though, I put lots of ornaments in the bowl to recreate the thick foliage and hiding places bettas need to feel protected. One gallon or 100 gallons, bettas like lots of places to hide. They still swam just fine in the setups I had at that time.

Should a 20 gallon be big enough for one male betta because I'm worried it is not enough to space it is a 20 gallon and a 50 wat heater and 4 sponge filters and silk plants
BetterBetta
BetterBetta - 7 years ago
A 20 gallon is more than enough space for a betta, he will surely enjoy the 20 long. While the accepted 'minimum' tank size for a betta varies from person to person, the average is around 2.5 gallons. :)

I have this tank. But mine didn't come with the round airstone it came with the bigger one. Basically I bought it last December for some neon tetras before I relized that tank was too small for them. Unfortunitly all my neons died in April but my female betta now lives in the 3 gallon tank with a fliter and heater. The airstone is in the 5 gallon with my pleco because a airstone from what I've been told isn't a nesary for bettas but it is for plecos. And since my 5 gallon tank is very close to the 3 gallon I can use the same air pump. My male is in a 1 gallon unheated and flitered tank but I'll get another 3 gallon and heater for him but....i don't know where I'm gonna put it because even with a power strip I've ran out of outlites. Lol.
Foxgirlgamer
Foxgirlgamer - 7 years ago
+BetterBetta I'm going to try to get another power strip for mine. My female betta doesn't hate airstones it's just the current is too strong for her to swim and get air at the top. Even on the lowest setting. But my male crowntail loves them.
BetterBetta
BetterBetta - 7 years ago
Running out of power outlets is a problem I run into too! The amount of power bars, splitters, and extension cords in my fish room is shocking haha. The three gallon tank works great for my female and male bettas (separate tanks). I think your pleco could probably enjoy the air stone more than the betta, as some bettas even hate them. I have two that like them and two that despise them. It will definitely be much more useful with the pleco in the 5 gallon, that was a smart decision- I never would have thought of using it elsewhere. :)

The Glow in the dark substrate is definitely okay for you to use. I find it only glows if I hold a bright light next to it to 'charge' it and to only holds the glow for a few seconds. I'd imagine it would flow more in a brighter lit tank, but for me, it's simply a white gravel.

my betta is 6 years old and is living in a 2.5 gallon tank which is the tank he's been in for 7 years. Bettas who die after 3 years isn't because of the tank size bettas are very very hardy fish they even survive in cups however in saying that it also depends on how long a betta has been at a petstore for if the betta was there more weeks/months is obviuly going to be very unhealthy when compared to betta that's only been there days.

2.5 is the recommended minimum. Is bigger better? Of course. Can a betta live a long life in this tank? Yes. If you're not a bum and change the water frequently. 3 gallons for 1 Betta is completely fine. But keep up on water changes, and block the filter or get an air regulator or Betta will be dust. Smaller tanks are more work. Im looking to go from 3gallon halfmoon to 10. Because I want a few other fish. Been keeping fish successfully most of my life. Only lost them when I had to donate them because I moved.

Random Commentator Yet another ignorant kid who thinks keeping fish is just putting it in a tub and that's it.

I've been keeping and breeding fish successfully, long before you was even born or thought of, dealt with Ich once and didn't lose a single fish to it (which the fish i bought came with it btw) just once in all the years of keeping fish, never had a fish with fin rot, bloat, popeye, dropsy or any other disease i see so regularly on these videos and do you know why? probably not BC your another ignorant asshat who isn't willing to learn or do the research that's needed to keep fish successfully, from learning basic knowledge which is so important especially on nitrogen cycle and water parameters which cannot be steadily controlled in less than 10g of water, all the way up to suitable tank sizes. When you ignore the basics you set yourself up for failure, not only do you fail but you also fail your fish by making it die a slow unnecessary death.

Like i said I'm done, take it or leave it it's not my fish your killing or that keeps dying.

Donna you don't have to say that, 3 gallons is perfect. 2.5 is a minimum, the fish will survive and thrive in a 2.5, don't tell her she is wrong for buying a 3 gallon, betta's should not do lower than a 2.5. But I do like that you care for the betta, but he is happy

+Donna and your response is exactly why people probably give you shit a lot. You're judgemental and elitist, everyone is ignorant compared to you. You're special.

:/

There's a hundred ways to encourage other people into larger tanks. This isn't one of them. Bitch.
Donna
Donna - 7 years ago
+TheStoneSpiral You don't get it at all, what I'm saying is giving a betta a bigger tank = more dilution of waste which is less likely to suffer from a slow poisoning like it would in a 2.5 - 5gallon tank. Doing a weekly WC in a 2.5g isn't near enough to control the ammonia, your Bettas are being poisoned by their own shit.

So instead of me wasting my time and effort trying to educate your ignorant ass, I'll leave you some links to educate you on the matter.

+Donna That 8-10 number is a rare outside number.. actually the oldest I've been able to find was an anecdote about a 7 year old fish. 3 years.. well four if you add the year at the breeder, is average. Stop trying to make things other than what they are. Maybe if we were getting fish from local breeders the age range might improve, but I don't know about you but mine came from Petsmart. The only distributor in my town that actually takes some kind of care of their animals.

Next you're going to give me shit for buying a 5.5 gallon tank so my betta could follow two corys around to keep him entertained instead of a twenty gallon tank to satisfy your fishy elitism.

Look, I heard this shit when I owned rats. The average life span is about two years, but you can get them up to three, even four sometimes. And there's a breeding line that can live up to five. But that doesn't change the average lifespan. They're considered geriatric after one year. No amount of yelping changes the breeding quality of an animal unless it's directed at the breeders.. with some legal force behind it.

Donna no 2.5 gallons is
TheStoneSpiral
TheStoneSpiral - 8 years ago
+SohiHien  Most people can find a small filter for small tanks.  Mine came with a cascade filter that I have since 'life hacked' from a simple chemical filter to a biological one.  It tests fine and I go all the way to a fifty percent water change because it's a smaller sized tank so build up is faster.  It's 2.5 gallons and my Betta is hardly suffering.

But my problem is with people who constantly up the 'minimum' for no better reason than what appears to be virtue signalling.  I see larger and larger numbers the more I look into other tanks but the reasoning is always flimsy.  Does a Betta actually do better in a ten gallon tank or is that people feel better about keeping one in a ten gallon tank?  Some don't seem to see the difference.
SohiHien
SohiHien - 8 years ago
Betta's breath through their gills as well and you should not be skimping on size, the need for oxygenation or water changes because of the belief that since they can get air from the surface they are fine. I think 2.5-3 gallon is the minimum for a betta. Anything smaller is inhumane in terms of size and the fact that with such a small water volume wastes build up quickly. The betta is living in the dirty water (air breather or not) so a dirty waste filled tank is just as dangerous for them as a full water breathing fish. More volume = more dilution of wastes and a better buffering ability for water chemistry changes. Smaller tanks should have more frequent water changes for this reason as well. Bettas love to swim and explore and they are a larger fish so they need space to do that! 5 gallons is perfect for a betta but 2.5/3 is ok too!
TheStoneSpiral
TheStoneSpiral - 8 years ago
+Donna I've had plenty of Bettas live for a long time without that.  It takes a little extra work but it's doable.  5.5 gallons is the largest 'bare minimum' I've ever heard about for a Betta.  It's adding fuss to the degree of an obsessed hobbyist with a bit of an elitist edge to go with it.

Please explain to me how oxygenation of the water helps a fish that breaths air.  I have a low flow carbon filtration system and I do 1/2 water changes a week with a siphon to get the gunk out of the gravel to take care of the ammonia build up, with a set up like that there's no need for full changes.  After a while, if you're regular, the Betta figures out what's up and stops freaking out so much.  All mine have eventually stopped having fits when the tube comes down.. they realize it's not dangerous.  It means they're less stressed by it.

And you know what?  The filter itself doesn't take up much room at all because modern filter designs have become more compact and it was designed for the volume of the tank in mind.

I think you're confusing Bettas for goldfish, which do need more volume and a larger tank to take care of multiple air quality factors.  But Bettas don't need oxygenated water, they just need the shit cleaned out on a regular basis and I've seen plenty of Bettas live for several years on that basis alone.

A well kept tank of three gallons like the video poster has is fine, it's actually great.  It's not a 1/4 gallon prison cell.  And neither is my tank.

What's your next step in your own cycle to demand bigger and bigger bare minimums?  Insisting Bettas all be released back in the wild because a tank of any size as become too cruel for your taste?  Because that's where constantly upping the minimum leads.

TL;DR Realism dear, you're going to have to deal with it.  In any animal keeping community you're going to find a lot of people that disagree with whatever high minded ideas you've got on what is best.  Just like everyone else.
Donna
Donna - 8 years ago
Is that you justifying yourself with keeping a betta in less than minimum requirements?

Anything less than a 5gallon you cannot establish a proper nitrogen cycle, you will get heat fluctuations (if you provide heat which will then take away volume of water) adding a filter which is NEEDED for gas exchange, filtration to convert ammonia, filter particles, build up of beneficial bacteria, oxygenation etc etc, internal filters leaves them less water volume, more water changes are needed which then stresses the Betta leaving them with a lowered immune system which then leaves them susceptible to illness, disease and death.

So if you want your Betta to just survive for a year or two, go ahead! A betta should be thriving and living a healthy happy life up to 8-10 years. Why else do you think there's a big misconception that bettas only live a short life? Bc they're kept in tiny volumes of water with less than minimum requirements which allows them to thrive. I could go on but its up to you to do your own homework and research to stop this ludicrous cruel way of keeping just for your own selfish enjoyment.
TheStoneSpiral
TheStoneSpiral - 8 years ago
5.5 is a bare minimum? Nope, sorry, 3 gallons is a very nice sized tank for a Betta and there is nothing wrong with that. But 1 gallon in a wider design is the only bare minimum I've ever taken seriously. My 2.5 gallon tank is more than adequate for my Betta, it has plenty of swim room without being too deep. Hell, I have a short, wide base 1.5 gallon jar that I'm going to turn into a tank and it will have more than enough swim room.

This idea that bigger tank always equals better is nonsense and getting way out of hand with the demands I hear people come up with. Every time I turn around someone has tacked another gallon onto what they think is best for a Betta. Yeah, the fish has to be able to do more than turn around on itself all the time but you can't expect everyone who gets a Betta to go for a 5.5 gallon tank when a well designed and cared for 2 gallon tank is fine.

do u have to have a pump?
BetterBetta
BetterBetta - 8 years ago
+Eunjeh Sung You do need one for this specific filter, and all air stones require a pump. If you can find or would prefer to use a different filter that fits, then the tank does not require the pump at all to run. You'd have to remove the air stone though, but most bettas wouldn't mind- mine are all turned down pretty low :)

I have this tank and I absolutely hate it. the back blends outward due to the water, and the lid always gets dirty from the water splashing when the bubbles pop. the air stone gets me mad when I'm vacuuming the gravel to comes loose and hard to get back in place.
BetterBetta
BetterBetta - 8 years ago
+Colorado Rose I hear a lot of complaints similar to yours! I can agree too. I have two of these tanks, and one has an easy lid and the other one is very difficult to get on because of the bending. Not as serious as some stories (where the lid won't go on at all, or falls in the tank) but still a issue. Also true with the lid- I don't have trouble with the air stone though, but I also have a lot of live plants in this tank now so I never get too close to the substrate to avoid breaking roots. It's a affordable tank for the size and what it comes with, but it certainly has its quirks.

It's risky to put a betta in an uncycled tank as ammonia can raise very quickly, so he was in a quarantine when this tank was being set up. That is why he wasn't immediately put into the tank. Thanks for commenting! :)

Round tanks can make them blind
BetterBetta
BetterBetta - 8 years ago
+Wolf life The distortion of the water & rounded sides is what contributes to the blindness, which is why spherical bowls are generally unsafe. However, as long as there is no distortion when looking into the tank, then the betta won't experience any distortion looking out. Although it may appear these tanks would cause distortion, they aren't as round as they look- it's actually just a slight curve that doesn't cause any weird distortion, so they're safe to use. :)

Just be sure the decorations don't peel off over time (I owned many different decorations from all different pet stores and every one of them peeled off/produced bad smells in my fish tank). I now ONLY use silk plants, bettas were injured from sharp points on the objects (inside/outside) from their fins which got infected. So I never buy anything that isn't silk now.

I just got  this tank, and my problem with it currently is the hose and wire to the airstone sticking out in the tank. it isn't very pretty
VioletNinetales
VioletNinetales - 8 years ago
alright thanks. I did not know about the fish-in cycle. I let the tank sit on its own for a day and a night, and added a red betta, then after a week of him being very active and friendly, he started sitting on the bottom of the tank, I did everything I could like changing the water, turned the lights and airstone off in case that was what bothered him, but I had just learned about that it could be ammonia that was the problem. but it was too late, and he had passed away before I could try to save him. I do have an already established tank, a 20 gallon, but I was afraid of him attacking my goldfish(which I kept at 72, as I have 4 tetras in the same tank who were there first when I was given them). I changed the water by about 50%, and the tank Is currently running, fish-less. the next time I go to the pet store will be this weekend, so two weeks would have passed. how long will it take before a tank is cycled?
BetterBetta
BetterBetta - 8 years ago
I did a fish-in cycle, so I put him in after letting the tank run for about 2 days. Then after adding him I watched the parameters very closely, used a water conditioner that was supposed to neutralize ammonia, and did very frequent water changes until the good bacteria developed. That way he didn't have to spend as long in his quarantine!
VioletNinetales
VioletNinetales - 8 years ago
yeah, its also a little difficult to get the cords to fit through the slots in the lid without pulling the airstone. also, how long did you wait before you put your bettas in these tanks?
BetterBetta
BetterBetta - 8 years ago
+VioletNinetales I manage to hide them okay behind the live plants I now have in his tank, but I can agree this tank does have a lot of cords - the heater, air stone tubing, light cord, filter tubing, etc. They can certainly take a while to get used to and are pretty difficult to hide completely, especially on the outside of the tank.

BetterBetta

+Sara Hiebert My betta doesn't have problems with the filter as I keep the flow very low. Horsepiration

+BetterBetta That makes perfect sense :) Thanks
BetterBetta
BetterBetta - 8 years ago
+Horsepiration Yes, I don't have any complaints! It still runs great and I haven't had any issues with the media either. There is a way to use it without the air stone- simply turning the flow knob on the tubing down until no air can get through (thus leaving it connected but no bubbles) :) The actual light is powered by electricity and isn't connected to the bubble feature at all, so you can still use the light part if you want/need. I do this in this tank now, actually, as I have it under a large pumpkin ornament and didn't want the bubbles coming up and pushing the pumpkin around.

I've had my betta since Christmas and when I first got him all I had was a 1gal tank for him(I know awful) but now I have a 3gal tank for him.... i thought all would be well but I'm having probs. the filter broke so I had to get a new one.... and the tank is designed weird so it's hard to find a filter that even fits in the tank.. the filter in here now works okay, but the water is cloudy(it's been cloudy for a long time) I've done several partial water changes but noting seems to be working!! please, just any advice? I plan on keeping the dude alive because I love him v much.... sorry this comment is so long

BetterBetta
BetterBetta - 8 years ago
+Aylarose Vanslooten Yes they can! There should be a hose that connects to the air pump that has two little knobs coming off of it. +HAR PER It depends on the individual fish on whether or not they like the bubbles. I had one fish that loved them and would intentionally go swim into the stream of bubbles and would sometimes even lie on top of the air stone :) Another betta I use this tank with hates them, so I turned the bubble feature off. As far as the lights go, I've never had any issues. Some people think only natural light/colors are best, but there are also a lot of people that believe that that is a myth, and any color/light is fine :)

I have a question for you - or anyone that might be able to answer this question. I literally just had a 10 gallon glass fish tank donated to me. Neighbour's fish died, they didn't want more. They knew I liked animals and asked if I wanted it. They promised there was no leaks or anything wrong with it. It does have the white stuff, which i suppose is calcium build up? (some CLR should remove that and a couple cycles of bleach should remove any left over 'bad stuff'. Its gonna be almost a year before I get a fish, given the house is under construction.) So my question basically is, given I want to get a betta... Would a 10 gallon be too much just for the fish or should I try adding in some molly's or something?
Dandi's Den
Dandi's Den - 8 years ago
It does! I used to have a blue crown tail in a 1G like, 3 years ago. he lasted a year, which after the fact i found out I was pretty lucky. I was aiming to get a 3 or a 5G tank next summer when the 10G was handed to me. I mean the kits alone are almost $100. I don't have a filter, air stones, heater or hood, but those aren't overly expensive. I still have the decorations and substright (Somewhere) from before!

Hi! It is perfectly safe to have a betta alone in a 10 gallon. You would just require a lot of plants (fake or live) to give him places to hide :) If you want to add tank mates, you certainly can, but you don't have to. Hope this helped! )

I've certainly heard a lot of people have had difficulty with the lid. Although my bettas don't have issues with the filter, the lid is a little tricky to get on - it's never fallen in though. +shirley chen I've had this tank since late March, so about 6 months? The lid is slightly difficult to put on but nothing major. I don't see any risk of the lid falling in (but I have not had it over a year). I have absolutely no issue with the filter, and if the suction cup did decide to fail, it primarily stays on with the back clip anyways. Hope this helps!

+Cynthia Taylor There certainly is a few. Filter, air stone, heater, light puck.. Plus I added the extra bubble chest (but that's not the tanks fault) so there's that cord too. I like the tank overall, but the cords could certainly be a downside to some people.

Is having a Betta costly? I'm tight on budget right now
Nathan Woof!

ryantrench at walmart there is a 10 gallon that has a lid and filter for 30 dollars. heaters are like 10 dollars a baby betta costs 2-3 dollars at petco plus and water conditioner is like 5 bucks like 15 bucks on decor plus food which is also like 5 bucks make sure in the ingridients there is no kind of meal. So like 68 bucks

Not too bad. Do another job like babysitting and you should be good.

So I just recently got my betta a few weeks ago and my "job" is babysitting my neighbor and I get paid $20. I'm only 13 and I've bought everything (except the tank cus we already had one, also the water pump which was only $10 at my local Walmart.) Yes this is the most inexpensive pet ever (that I know of) so if your looking to spend maybe $30-$60ish then go for it!

It fully depends on how big you want to go! I'd say it's certainly one of the least expensive pets, depending where you buy and what you buy. Some tank kits come fully equipped with everything you need and run as little as $20. If you stick to the minimums (2.5 gallon tank, heater) it can be as low as $15-20. :) If you really want to save some money but want more than the minimum requirements, buying off Amazon or even secondhand can be an option. Just make sure that if buying secondhand online, you see the tank in person before buying to make sure you don't get scammed in any way. Long answer short, they are not costly if you get the bare minimum, however if you want to upgrade, it can quickly become expensive. Hope this helps!

Maybe, it all depends on the tank
2.5 gallon tank with filter around 20-40 dollars (could get smaller if u r planning on upgrading him when you have the money.
Heater around $10.00
Decor depends on what floats your boat
Betta 5-30 (yes my petstore does sell 30 dollar bettas)
Substrate may or may not be necessary but should be pretty cheap
(This is all from the top of my head)

+Two. happy.bettas Yeah, petsmart tanks are really pricey. (Also bad quality), I bought a 3 gallon tank for 45 dollars and when I opened it broke. I went back to replace it, and the light and power cord was rusted shut. I than gave up and went to Walmart for a cheaper and better one :)
BetterBetta
BetterBetta - 8 years ago
I got mine at Walmart for $35 too. Unfortunately for me, I can't find many tanks cheaper than that - that include everything but the heater - for less than $45, unless it's a tank that's waaay too small, and even then it's around $20. I'm from Canada, so prices are probably a bit more than someone may pay in the States (assuming that is where you are from).
