Rachel O'leary allright I ll make one today. Thanks for the fast reply.
1 question...I ve got 5 Otocinclus Vittatus..they ve spawned twice but no eggs gave living baby s...What can I do to help them? It s a Otocinclus only 50L. tank with low PH, 3 pieces driftwood that leak tannins...couple of giant Valisnaria, stone hiding places all over the bottom with very fine shrimp gravel rounded..and they are still growing so not adults yet.I have several bushes made of Subwassertang and Javamos.3 spawningmops just in case they wanna use them.
They eat veggies, algy tablets, shrimp food. They are very visible and seem to be healthy.
Is there anything I can do to help them more or is it just wait and see?

Problem solving, Fish Pimp styles. Well done you!
I would be interested to see a vid on your Dwarf Puffer and Bumblebee Goby tanks, I am curious as to your set up with heavy stocking and whether you have problems with aggression as these are - in theory - quite territorial fish. I have 8 Gobys in a 65 lt (not their forever home) and I have had to separate out/hospitalize my littlest guy twice due to nipped fins (he asks for it, hes a little shit!) I also have a 120 lt with 3 adult DP males and a 85 lt with 3 juvy DP males and it isn't always sunshine and lollypops in those tanks either. Sendin ya thanks for your consistently top notch content.

For Covers I am surprised that you don't keep this stuff around (http://www.supplyhouse.com/DiversiTech-650-300-Egg-Crate-Louver-Air-Return-Diffuser-2-ft-x-2-ft-x-1-2?gclid=Cj0KCQiAmITRBRCSARIsAEOZmr77aTafEZ7XTGscNqx74nKuzQ6ZO9818UbB5tG0XPpRZiOr89HnkWYaAvgYEALw_wcB)

I use it for temporary covers, supporting lights all sorts of stuff...easy to cut and fashion and for the cost, I find that 1 full sheet ( which I pick up at Home Depot or Lowes) lasts me a few years .

I use it on the bottom of my aquariums to provide a way for rock work to sort of lock into place, and distribute weight,
its versatile, repetitively inexpensive

Hope the males don't put you off as I'm dying to see how you go about it! I've learned so much from you already, I'm truly tickled to think I may be building my sorority alongside you. Rachel O'leary cool! I look forward to seeing some more centromochlus in the future. Thanks for the quick reply. Also please can you do more breeding projects? Something like dwarf puffers maybe as their wild population has dropped by around 40% because of the hobby and they aren't too challenging to breed, in short certain species could really use a captive population so that their wild counterparts can bounce back. Thanks

It seems a bit wrong that the supplier isn't responsible for it's mistake. Here they would pay for return shipping and either refund or send the right order out. Perhaps they are overseas and that is why this can't be done. But it seems like it wouldn't make good business to not fix a mistake.

Only problem I've ever had with all my male bettas (I have 5 currently) is that out of the five I have 1 who will kill tankmakes. He has to be housed alone with now exceptions. lemonade from lemons! I love you vlogs, they are very informative. Could you please do one on dry fish foods(cheaper versus the dearer brands) ie what they shouldn't and should contain, thinking on the lines of the smaller fishes. One for omnivores/herbivores/carnivores?
Rachel O'leary
Rachel O'leary - 6 years ago
I did a video on what I look at, I am always apprehensive about really harping on brands, becasue the reality is even though it may not be up to MY standards, there is a reason all of those foods are popular and affordable and for broad spectrum application- fine. Sort of like the food we can buy at the grocery store- its not UNSAFE, but maybe just not ideal

Do you have a bunch of your pond plastic planter pots ?? You could put em all in a big tank or drag a pond indoor & put em in those plant pots separately. You wouldn't have to worry about the quarantine issue if they were all in the same water & it wouldn't endanger your other fish.

Do you keep, sell, and ship fresh water clams? Been thinking of making a 3 liter "tank" unheated but temps range from 70-84F, with plants, clams, snails, cherry shrimp (which I hear are hardy), and some white cloud mountain minnows. Do you think that would be over stocked with daily water changes of 10-20%? No filter, no aeration. And what would you recommend for lighting? Thanks.

Not with enough plants and algae and he uses land moss submerged as well which makes lots of O2 by pearling. Check out Michael Langerman's videos on YT. He has 2 liter grow out tanks made from soda bottles for his guppies.

Rachel O'leary , you do have something to offer back. Just your knowledge alone is worth way more than you know. I have learned so much from you, which has a monitory value. You are gracious enough to share that knowledge for far less than it’s worth. Think in terms of a college professor salary, travel and publishing. Your scientific knowledge and research makes you an expert. Then, your teaching us best business practices...like today. Then your entertainment value. We all love your vlog that we look forward to everyday. A building is not a pipe dream. Your value is fish building worthy. We all want to see an expanded species building with Your expertise in that building.

Custom Aquarium has offered, they are wonderful- I am saving that for something thatis worth it- like i I build my building. As far as crowd sourcing, I built this business by starting with $100 and am very proud of how far I have come. At some point, I may try and do somethign like that, but only when I feel like i have something to offer back. I think I would be most comfortable if I was able to do it myself, though I have no doubt this awesome community would help me :)

Hi Rachel great video as always, I've read some of the comments and replys from you about patron and go fund me etc . I understand your a business as you say but and this is a big BUT , the effort you put in to YouTube is 2nd to none and if you want that new fishroom and to expand then do it ! . It's about the knowledge you share with us and about the journey you share the ups and downs ! . And live shows with superchat etc . Surely we can decide if we want to help you go further and take us with you! . Your channel would blow up with viewers, followers . Would love to have been a fish nearby when you verified that the order for the Bettas was indeed wrong. Great quick thinking to house them safely. I love the Stiphodons. If you have enough of those pre-shipping clear bins do a DIY and drill small holes and float them or clamp to the edge of your tanks. That way they stay separated and get fresh water. Keeps them close to the surface and protects them until their fins get better. Here to "25 Days of Fishmas"!

54Punchie I have just bred hundreds in one of my tubs, but as I'm in Australia I can't help :( . There is a way of sending eggs but I've never tried it nor do i have an export license. However check out ANGFA , the Australian/ New Guinea fish society of Australia website. I got my first batch from a local member and I do know some members mail eggs overseas. Whether honey blue-eye eggs are an allowable export if captive bred, i don't know.

As soon as I think their fins are back in shape/wont get worse/are improving enough, they all have varying degrees of erosion, likely from the water quality. As long as they are making real progress, eating well, etc probably a couple of weeks.

Easier said then done with sponsorship- most want to give you product, which is nice but does not pay the bills. You could get little jars to hold them in temporarily, loads of the big betta breeders actually keep them jarred and do 100% water changes a day with a heat matt underneath the jars (not necessary because your fish room is heated), could be a good temporary solution if you have any jars/plastic boxes about. The breeders do it because they move the bettas around so much from tank to tank to breed them that its a temporary home for them usually :) "Inglorious bettas"/Gianne does several great videos on here about jarring her betta fish etc. She orders her jars off amazon I believe? And they are about 2 gallons each

Yeah hahah I know!! its definitely a strange situation :) . yea the dillution seems like a good plan their fins are torn to shreds!!! i wonder if the suppliers had them all housed in the same tank as "female" bettas and they decided to fight it out in there until they were shipped haha
Rachel O'leary
Rachel O'leary - 6 years ago
+Lauren there are any number of solutions or plans I could have had if I would have known I was getting them. I may still move them into jars but they need some serious to and I think the dilution of the bigger volume is a better idea for them

I hear ya! Try it when you have time. It will be much easier to maintain till you find homes then having them in individual tanks. Looks pretty cool too. Just set one up and love it!

Rachel O'leary I have never heard of it, thanks for the recommendation, maybe you could do a video on it!
Among others my books by Gosse, Boulenger, Sterba, and TFH mags from '55 to '83 are my favourites- just to compare how things have changed :).
When I look at today's planted aquascapes and reef tanks ...good Lord! We have come such a long way from when aquariums used to have slate bases/bottoms so they could be heated by spirit lamps and a wooden spoon was essential to revitalise water through a brisk agitation! :)

You should really consider doing a go fund me or something similar like Joey and Jenny did. You are equally as entertaining and, in my opinion, even more informative than almost any other FishTuber. Plus I love the fact that you’re one of the only entertaining retailers that post consistent videos. That helps a lot of people to trust buying from a random person online. I know for me personally, that was the biggest reason why I ordered from you.

Plus I can only imagine there would be a line of sponsors willing to get behind an effort to make awareness of endangered species & promote the breeding and sustainability of the CARES species. With your online presence you can make this happen while at the same time sustain your business

I find that at present your channel is much more informative than most other channels. I do agree however that if you focus a fundraiser exclusively as a means to expand your business it may not be as successful as if you decide to use the new building/expansion to partially be used on conservation / education / show tanks. How about a section to exclusively breed CARES fish? I would happily chip in for that. Your channel is definitely my favorite fish related one. Greetings

Rachel O'leary But people don’t watch you because you are a business. They watch you for your personality and information. I understand your point though. “I should only expand when the income supports the expansion!” It makes perfect business sense.

I’ve been watching you for almost a year now and have heard you mention multiple times about having a Fish building in the future. It seems the Fish community is really exploding right now and this is the time to use it to your advantage before the craze is gone. If anything, just view it as a loan from people that like and support you. You can pay people back by maybe free fish or decor based on the amount of support they gave or figure out a way to “return the favor” if it makes you feel uncomfortable taking money from strangers. These other FishTubers are doing it for content since that is their “business”. You could actually breed fish no one else has and use that as your way of justifying it since people would have a go to person for things they can’t purchase locally. That is the very reason why I ordered from you in the first place.

Obviously I have no idea who you are outside of these videos and the few email exchanges we had during my couple orders. You actually seem to care about this hobby and you are actually doing something to benefit the community. Yes these other people make people want to get Fish which boosts popularity, blah blah blah. But you are doing that AND selling these fish that you talk about. I mean really. If these people can do it, why can’t you?

The difference is, I am a business- they are personalities. I feel like I should be able to do it from the work I have put into my business- though I truly do appreciate the sentiment!

Rachel O'leary, woah that’s some range. Re relative humidity, it would be interesting what the dew point is, where I’m from is Adelaide Australia our winters on the plains only get frosty but no ice or snow. At the coldest time in winter Average overnight temp is 3-10c day temp is 10-15c and wet humid cold. From what I understand once snow arrives relative humidity drops dramatically.
Rachel O'leary
Rachel O'leary - 6 years ago
Yes, I have been keeping track, mmainly because we set up the external probe in the greenhouse. Right now, its geting to mid 70s during the day and 40s overnight. What is most confusing for me is the relative humidity.

I heard that you can house 2 betta males together if youre aquarium is big enough so they can swim from eachother and also you keep 2 betta males together if you have more than 3 females with them .
Big City Bettas
Big City Bettas - 6 years ago
What you've described is a stressful, dangerous situation to put domestic splendens in. Males do not do well with other aggressive fish. Please don't believe everything you hear especially when it concerns the greatly misunderstood domestic betta.
Big City Bettas
Big City Bettas - 6 years ago
FuruyaHaKokoniImasu betta splendens are not the same as wilds. They don't establish territory like wilds do and were bred to be hyper aggressive for fighting. Under no circumstances is it wise to mix domestic males. It at the very least causes stress, at the worst they will kill each other. Domestics and wilds are very different behavior wise.
FuruyaHaKokoniImasu
FuruyaHaKokoniImasu - 6 years ago
k animals Male Berta life in a territory of about 2 square foot (50cm²) so if you have a tank 5x2 foot ( 120x50 cm), which will give them some space in between there territorys, it should work theoretically. But in reality thing don't have to work out that well.. I wouldn't risk my pets for such an experiment tbh..

I’ve been setting up a betta tank for my new male betta, who is crazy friendly and will eat right out of my hand. He’s fearless! I named him Murphy, after Corey’s Puffer! I’ll be setting up a 75g after Fishmas. What do you recommend? I know you’re crazy busy, so don’t sweat the question. It will have hardscape...rocks, wood, and live plants for sure.
