Three Betta Experiment (Fighting Fish) 300 gal tank

I Wanted to see if male Betta Could live in peace in a large enough environment. So i set up a 300 gallon tank with One female, and two Crown Tail Betta, and about 300 guppies. I have Brown Bristle-nose Plecostomus, half a dozen of the albino long fin ones and Misery snails.

you should add a dozen females. they will start breeding. With any tank you should have more females than males. They could fight over the female.

XOXO Loveya
XOXO Loveya - 6 years ago
this is very interesting, yet again betta splendens would just keep to their own territory is given enough tank space. Wild bettas can normally live together in a 40 gallon, which is what I keep them in, but I normally keep my 75-500 gallon tanks for my bigger fish ;)

Wow! Here i am thinking i'm giving my lovely boy a palace with a ten gallon planted setup, and you go and give 3 of them 100 gallons a piece, with a woman to boot! with 300+ guppies though, how do you handle the natural aggression bettas have against fluttery fish? Do the guppies just learn to avoid betta territory or do you get losses from nips and squabbles?

It's very obvious they can live together. The average males territory is about 3 feet. But it's best to buy only one beta. Unless your a experienced breeder.

I'm not surprised at all that they don't fight.  If they have enough of their own territory they usually won't.  I don't believe they fight very often in their natural environment.  I think they flare and maybe chase and maybe an occasional gill butt or two, but for the most part I don't think they want to fight with each other.  People think they enjoy that and were bred to do that, and that's simply not true.  It's just their nature.  When backed against a wall they'll fight.  If there is room enough to avoid a fight they will. Beautiful tank BTW.

I keep 3 males and 6 females in a 30 gallon - heavy planted - with ease. Choosing males with smaller fins is the way to go. They might fight once in a while, but they will suffer less damage and recover very fast.

Well..although I adore my local fish store, I think he is very firm on what he will or will not add to his shop. They have this perfect large fish. She always follows me around and coos at me when I visit her, but he wont sell her for any amount of money. Now, the staff there say that fish is vicious to them and they hate her. To each his own. You should sell some of those beautiful bettas. I bet you would have a crowd for those colors and looks.
LostMexicanFilms
LostMexicanFilms - 8 years ago
A good friend of mine owns the local pet store. We figured out a long time ago that the fish wholesaler sells... Common betas $X.00 dollars.... And mix variety betas $X.09 dollars...
So he just orders the mix variety cause they are cooler and they bring in more customers. Talk to your fish store they might not know it's worth the extra pennies for better fish.

Well, this is pretty much what would happen in the wild. If a male comes across another male, one will inevitably retreat. When they're stuck in 5 gallon bowls it becomes a problem.

Wild bettas have about a square meter of territory each, so in a large enough tank, it is possible. However, you must have an extremely heavily planted tank, like this awesome tank does. It's like Russian roulette. Some work, others do not.

LostMexicanFilms
LostMexicanFilms - 8 years ago
Here is the trick. Take some of your tap water, have it tested... Now only work with fish that will work with your parameters. Makes life simple. My tap water is 7 so I work with anything that can thrive in this water. The Angels were slowly adjusted to alkaline water.

+Joseph Farah "Straight tap water" So I suppose it isnt dechlorinated.
On my 350G I do 25% water changes every month also on an automated system except it comes from a deposit of tap water that I fill up every now and then, it takes about 24/48H for chlorine to go bye bye, so no need to add prime or any other chemical, never had any problems. And I've had CO2 and fertilizers before, IMO waste of money, good light and fish that poop(I guess all of them) is all it takes.

He has 3 males in a 300 gallon... you have 25 in a 55. That's animal abuse and not even close to what a wild life scenario would look like.
Angela Geli

I read that it still means a lot of stress to them if they are kept with other fish, even if they dont show it.
I guess nobody can tell right now, but I think you can tell by how old they get. 2 years or less: It was very stressful for them, and they were suffering for a lifetime (everyone knows how stress feels, imagine it being a constant situation)
5+ years: They were doing perfectly fine.
Bettas are fish with personality. If one betta does well in a community tank, it doesnt go for all bettas.

+MageTezzos Oh wow! Fish seem weaker these days too. It used to be so easy to breed fish, now they seem to get sick more often. :( I just have a male betta fish in my 10 gallon. He won't let me get him any roommates. I put in some corydoras, and he started to pick on them. I gave them to my sister. They are happy in her 40 gallon with other corydoras anyway :)
MageTezzos
MageTezzos - 7 years ago
+Cheryl Dahl I'm down to about 6 or 7 guppies 6 males and 1 female in the 10 gallon. I swear the one female kills all other females. so I won't be restocking, unless the 10 gallon female dies, i'll put in another female from my endler tank.
MageTezzos
MageTezzos - 7 years ago
+Cheryl Dahl i've had guppies for several years now... a 14 or 15 gallon and a 10 gallon, they've never outgrown it, in fact my guppies never have more than 6-7 fry. I envy those whose guppies drop 40 fry. I really do. I'd be happy to get a 55 gallon.
hanzifaction
hanzifaction - 8 years ago
It all depends on the individual fish personality. But like you said in a big enough tank, they can just swim away from each other instead of fighting. I don't think they wanna get hurt in a fight, it's not beneficial to either fish. So they probably avoid fighting at all costs.

This is so interesting. I commend you for at least trying your experiment responsibly...in that the tank is 300 gallons, and is absolutely gorgeous!!
