Aquarium Co-Op I have a 60 litre tank, I have a red Bette with blue on the base of his tail. He got on really well with his original tank mates 5 Zebra danios. I just added 3 platy fish and 5 neon tetra. He was chasing them with his gills out for a few days but now he seems to be pretty fine with them being in there. I am worried however as he has developed a lump again underneath his body and I’m not sure what to do.

I have two Bamboo Shrimp in with my Betta. He was curious about their antennae at first but now ignores them. I think they're safe because they are quite large, whereas a Betta I had once hunted down and killed 8 out of 10 Cherry Shrimp ... for sport! He didn't even eat them.

We have a 55 gallon tank. A blue betta. 3 mollies, 6 neons, a bristle nose placo (albino ) and 6 red guppies. (Can't remember the name ) they all seem to be getting along. Want to add a loach and maybe some Cory cats. When our son lived here we had a 90, 80 . Two 55 gallon tank and. 10 . He moved and no more tanks. So we got one for father's day. Hubby is happy now. He missed the fish.

Bettas have such different personalities. I have a half moon that's crazy, crazy aggressive and I have it in a 45 breeder with a female convict and a juvenile firemouth. The Betta pushes around the firemouth BIG TIME but leaves the convict alone because it's so much bigger. I wouldn't put my other Betta in the same tank because it would get killed but this half moon can look after itself. The personality of the individual fish vary so much that you really have to take that into consideration.

I have a 30 gal tank with a betta, 5 glofish tetras, an angel fish and a hillstream loach. I got the betta and the angel fish at the same time and made sure both were calm, as the angel fish got older, he became a little more agressive but was already used to the betta

I've successfully kept tank mates with every betta I have had over the years. Currently I have a 29 gallon with 1 male betta, 8 platys and 6 mystery snails. Then a 10 gallon with one betta, 2 mystery snails and a few ghost shrimp.

Both tanks are well planted and long running cycled habitats. Love seeing all my happy, active fish!

I would love to find a tank mate but my Betta is super super aggressive. It’s a fish I took over care for when I moved in with my fiancé, a college student. So go figure it was in a half gallon NOT EVEN A FULL GALLON tank that had never been cleaned and horrible HORRIBLE fin rot but I honestly blame Walmart for a lot of that. I moved him into a 3.5 gallon and he seems to be doing a lot better. I would love to get a tank mate because he’s so used to being limited on space he never swims down to the bottom half of the tank, but he’s just so aggressive. I stuck a finger in the tank to try and move around a plant and he attacked me immediately. He tries to attack anything that comes close to the glass also. Wish he wasn’t so mean. I would love to put him in a bigger tank and get him some buddies!

It's cool seeing the contrast of the glowlight and neons and they all swim as 1. My betta is very tranquil and non aggressive he doesn't mind them at all and feeds right next to them.

Hi I love watching your videos very informative for the beginning like me. I had a betta with a dwarf grammie and when the betta was dieing the grammie would always go over to the betta and wiggle its fins to help the betta get up or just check on it. It was the sweetest thing I have ever seen with fish. So 2 fish stores couldn't figure out why my Betta die. All my parameters were on point and i also had 4 zebra dinos. So if you have any idea my mum berta die, I would appreciate some advice because I would love to get another one. Thank you so very much! Brandy from Hamilton? Ontario, Canada.......Eh! Lol

Would mollies be ok? I haven't been able to find a lot of info on them being a tank mate for bettas. I have two black mollies, not planning on getting more unless i can't get a betta with them.

I have a 20 gallon tank btw, fairly tall, has some plants - real and fake - but those are more off to the side and it's mostly open water from the middle to top. The other fish i have are some ghost shrimp, a bristlenose pleco, a mystery snail, and a sparkling gourami (planning on getting three more of them). The betta will be the last addition to the tank. It'd really help me if anyone could give me good information, don't want to cause fights between my fish :)

Hey guys, I have a few questions about a couple of stocking ideas for a new 10 gallon that I'm currently cycling. Keep in mind that this is my very first tank and I want to be somewhat cautious because I have no experience with caring for water as well as fish. So I definitely want a male betta, accompanied by Celestial Pearl Danios( not sure how much) and possibly neons or cardinals. What I'm clueless about is a bottom dweller. I REALLY want a kuhli loach or possibly a pleco. I've seen some cories but I really love how exotic a loach or a pleco looks. Would greatly appreciate some feedback. Don't want to rant and I know you need to know more about the tank itself so if someone can help out I would appreciate it.

I have a planted 40 gallon with lava rock. I have 1 Male beta, 1female beta, 7 zebra danios, 6 neon tetras, 1 bristlenose place, and 6 mystery snails. Only problem I've had is the Male beta under fin was getting damaged. Think it was from the rocks and not the other fish though. Lava rock do have some sharp edges. Make a pretty aqua scape but might be dangerous for fish that like to rest on them and have long fins.

I've had luck with copycats, neon tetras, and even some danios with my male betta, all at the same time. no fin nipping or harassment....on occasion the betta gets territorial and will chase off any fish that comes near his area. but its brief, and he stands zero chance of catching them and after a few chases he gets bored and just ignores the other fish. any fish that can be
'nippy" should be kept away from bettas as they have no defense against other fish. i love the ones you suggested.

I have a male betta in a 40 gallon community tank that does great. He has his spot in the pothos roots and seems very happy. I have guppies, black skirt tetras, cory cats, otos and a clown pleco. I also have a 20 gallon with a betta sorority that I am still working on. The sorority tank was started with baby females (very tiny fry). It has been really cool to watch them grow and see their colors develop. I plan on putting a few cory cats to put in with them.

Great content, Cory, I just subbed. What fish would you recommend for an algae eater for a 5G with a female betta? I had 3 corydoras in there with her (pepper, sterbai, panda) but the sterbai died and the panda isn't doing so well. Female beta can go with any community fish that isn’t a fin nipper. But I personally wouldn’t recommend putting a beta with much of anything other then a bottom tank only fish in a tank smaller then 20g. Interesting thing when I put a female elephant ear in my sons 55g community tank with a c360 filter just blasting the water... she swam towards the water flow. However since then she does keep to the opposite side where the flow is a lot less. Tank has 40+ fish mostly are tight schooling tetras.. bloodfins, glow tetras (not glow light the glow stripe lol) precella’s and all sorts of guppies. She is the feature fish of the tank and is doing well so far with me mix.

What about swordtails? Have a fancy guppy, a betta, swordtail, and a delta. Right now think the fancy guppy and swordtail are not getting along oo well. The guppy seems to be defending the dela, and him and the swordtail chase one another around the tank, occasionally the guppy will peck at the swordtail too. As for my betta, he seems somewhat okay with the other fish, only chasing the swordtail when it tries to go into the betta's favorite log resting place. I have a 5 gallon tank at the moment, but will be transferring them to a 10 gallon in the next few days. Should i seperate the swordtail though from the guppy/delta??

I have a beta who does not like tankmates. He loves his tank thou it’s full of live plants and all kinds of things for him to hide in and lay on and the flow is really soft so he doesn’t have to work very hard at all to swim. He is so spoiled that he only likes frozen blood worms. I think out of all of my tanks his is the most noticed because it’s in the kitchen so he is always swimming up to say hello.

I have my blue veil tail betta in a ten gal with three salt and pepper Cory cats. At first my betta was semi aggressive, but I think he was curious about the fish and wanted to test if they would attack him, kind of asserting his dominance I think lol. At first they would chase him around playfully and he wasn’t having it but now sometimes he schools with them. They get along well.

I've had them in 5-10gals with guppies, snails, neon tetras, amono shrimp( they may have been something else), and several different types of Cory cats. Currently I have a male in a 10 with 3 guppies, and a female in a 29 with 2 very small tiger barbs, 5 Cory cats, 1 small common pleco, and a quarter sized red eared slider. The only reason I have the turtle in there is because I've never had problems with it chasing the fish, and the only meat I've been able to get it to eat are blood worms. I have yet to have problems with bettas and other fish sharing a tank. If you know how it should help to temperament check a betta before you purchase. Also be sure that you have enough room in the tank before you put them together, and always put the other fish in first.

I think the neons are getting fin nippy, though, so I'm considering moving them. I also have a 10 gallon with a single male betta and an african dwarf frog in it. I did try my male betta with platys in the 10 gallon, but he HATED them. After removing them from the tank I saw why, they must've thought his fins were flake food. Poor guy.

Had a 29 gallon with platys, 4 cherry barbs, and a veil tail male. The betta used to eat the barb eggs, while they got in on in the plants. He also eventually started swimming with the platys, like he was one. He outlived them all (they were hand-me-down fish), and lived to about 4 years old.

He never lived in anything smaller than a 10 gallon, and he was a great buddy.

I have a betta and a mistery snail in a 5 gal.

I used to have them in a 2.5 and they seemed to tolerate each other, but The snail is getting pretty big and is quite messy so it was difficult to control water quality.

I would have gotten a bigger tank, but didn’t have the space so I try to keep up with water changes to avoid getting too much gunk in the tank.

I really don't seem to have a lot of issue keep Bettas with other fish. As long as they have the room they need they seem to be good.

I have pond snails and an apple snail. There are no problems but a bit of hilarious reactions sometimes. Like the day I thought my betta was dead. He was floating in his tank near the bottom, facing the floor with his tail going straight up towards the surface. Not even a fin twitch. I tapped the tank, my signal that there was food. Nothing. I tapped harder, and stirred up the water. His eye moved to look at me then straight back down.I rushed off to get my glasses. He was watching the teenyest tiny baby pond snail I have ever seen. Nothing broke his concentration for a very long time.He is very fond of his snails and dose them no harm at all.

20g heavily filtered with aquaponics. 2 male bettas, 1 female betta, 3 Rasbora, 10 male guppies and 5 Julii cories. everyone lives peacefully. Key is the largest dominant male betta is rather peaceful so he sets the tone with other bettas. The smaller male betta came from a 10g tank where he terrorized his tank mates so tried to "train" him by moving him to 20g tank. Now he's docile cause the bigger male puts him in his place. Very much much like dogs.

I've been keeping bettas for a few years and... I've gotten them to do well in almost every situation. I have a 55 gallon that has a betta in it, along with a blood parrot, three gouramis, and three angels, as well as a mildly aggressive pleco. Everyone in that tank is pretty docile, I can touch all their fins... the pleco is only aggressive if a fish is in its way when eating and at that point, it'll chase it off (usually the blood parrot).
I've never really had problems with my bettas being aggressive towards other inhabitants. That being said, there was one time I got a female and she was insanely aggressive towards everything. She did horribly with all my other girls. She did great with flirting with males, showed all the right signs... then after a good week or two of flirting and I let them meet she'd go back to her usual self and get aggressive and try to kill my males or chase them off to a corner then flare in the center of the tank. She only did well by herself (all snails were fine) until I put her in an aggressive tank. I have a 95 gallon that I just put the aggressive fish in when they can't be housed with everyone else and she did fine in there even though she is the smallest one.

I kept my betta with about 6 neon tetras and a common baby pleco for about a year in a 10 gallon. As the pleco got bigger I upgraded to a 55 so the beta is alone now because pleco and tetras went to new tank. New tank has more tetras and some gourami and platties so he didn't work out in there with them, but he did just fine with the original crew. Will probably get a few new tank mates soon but after I re scape the 10. Now that the pleco is out I can finally have a more heavy planted tank.

My betta is in a 10gal and he can be pretty aggressive but I wanted more movement in my tank so I have 5 zebra Danios, 2 Black kuhli loaches, 5 ghost shrimp, and 2 snails! They all get along great, it definitely makes my betta more interested in his surroundings. It seems like a lot for my size tank but everything is going well. Frequent water changes and plenty of food to go around. The danios actually eat a lot of the food before the betta gets to it which is great because this helps with his over eating problems. I’m hoping the shrimp will breed so I can put them into an other tank.

I've got a question. Upon being hired to a pet store, I started getting into fish, specifically bettas. My wife has a large happy female in a 3.7g with a ghost shrimp and 2 pygmy cory catfish, and they're thriving (filter, heater, the works). I just recently bought a gorgeous male feathertail for my 10g, after clearing out my other fish and doing a cleanup for him to live in. His only other tank mates are a male albino bristlenose pleco and 2 nerite snails. However, within the first hour of exploring the tank, he now sits underneath the filter and constantly flares at his reflection. What can I do to prevent constant flaring and aggression to his reflection in the glass? I've considered the aquarium sticker backdrops but I want to know if there are any other options.
Sorry for the long drawn-out story. XP

Before March 16th I owned 2 dogs, 0 fish, and 1 75 gal scheduled for frogs. I have always wanted dart frogs. Now....
10 gal with 1 male betta,
10 gal with 1 female betta.
I was buying dog food at a big box store and rounded the wrong corner.... Male betta sitting off to the side in a half-full cup certainly headed for the trash?...no color and sad. I left with a 10 gal set up and Finnegan the now devastatingly gorgeous crowntail betta. Happy St. Patricks Day to me.
The female betta was delivered to me by Petco four days ago....by accident!!! I ordered food and they sent a live fish in 38-degree weather! I just kept saying "are you kidding me!?!?! to no one in the room. I thought maybe the box just said "live tropical fish" She is tiny, alive, and a crowntail as well. She doesn't have a name yet. I am taking suggestions.
Everyone in the fish hobby knows by now, if you are still reading this... the 75 gal will now house fish. I am hooked. Pun intended.

I've kept Bettas in a 20g tropical community tank, and I've kept them with goldfish in a 50g. Yes, goldfish. The Betta had a favorite buddy, a Shubunkin that had a 10" body and another 12" of tail. They fed together, with the Shubunkin gulping the flakes and the Betta picking up the pieces the Shubunkin spit out. There were three other golds in that tank and everyone got along swimmingly (pun intended).

In the tropical community tank, I treated the Betta as a high school bully, as in if you put him in the tank first, he'll try to claim the entire thing as "his" territory and treat all the others fish as intruders. I found that if you put the Betta in LAST, it is like transferring the bully to a new school, and he tends not to try to boss the others around as much. As always, your Betta may vary.

Cory, thanks for the loach and snail ideas. I've been wanting to add to my current Betta set-up , 5g and just him, so a snail as you suggest would be perfect.

Oh yes I also have an anubias nano glued to the piece of wood as well, and I do add plant food to my water about every 2 weeks. I do not get much algae build up. I have only had to wipe down the inside glass twice in the last 8 months. The betta, tetra, ghost shrimp tank had an under-gravel filter. The others had a whisper filter set up like a small waterfall, I lifted it up by placing a small (2") wood block behind it :)

I have a 36 gallon with 1 male Betta, 7 zebra danios, 10 neon tetras, 6 glolight tetras, 3 female platys, 1 nerite snail, and 1 dojo loach. The only problem I have is that the platys are a little bit fat cause they eat the food I put in for the betta, plus the food I put in for the rest of the fish and loach. Lol.

I’ve got a male koi betta with a Malaysian trumpet snail in a 2.5! Question about the snail: I tried to give it a veggie tablet but George(betta) kept eating it so I had to take it out. How do I feed the snail and not overfeed George? I’ve got plants in there too, can it eat that?

One of my older bettas is in a 5 gallon with some fancy guppies that were overstock. I saw him nip at one when I first put guppies in but the put the betta into a breeder box for a couple days to let them adjust. Since they’ve been fine. The guppies help to clean up the food the betta doesn’t eat. I should note the betta is an older rosetail and mostly just lays on the plants all day as he has issues turning quickly or really doing anything quickly.

Hi Cory. I have been seeing your videos on YouTube and have enjoyed them thoroughly. Getting back into the hobby and wanted to keep some South American fish like Cory's and Ram's with Tetras. I live in Pune ( India). The temperature here varies, from dropping to as Low as 6 in the winter and as High as 44 in the summer ( Degree Celsius). I know that you've spoken about using heaters with Tropical fish tanks but I'm sure that loads of people here don't. What's your say on this?

I started with my Betta in a small DIY tank out of an old display I snagged from work, which was roughly 2 gallons without hardscape. Since then, I've pulled my old 29g out of storage and he's now living happily with way too many fish! I have at least 20 Zebra danios (my LFS was selling the fry as feeders so I bought ~10$ worth and they've since grown out), 5 dwarf neon rainbows, 5 feather-fin rainbows, 5 khuli loaches, 5 bronze cories, 3 SAEs, a trio of young sailfin mollies, a lone white skirt tetra, and there were some cherry shrimp in there ar one point but I have only seen one lately.

He did harass the young zebras and the young mollies because they were so small, but he lost his interest once he realized how fast they were. So far, everything has been going great and its a beautiful community to watch with the lone bright red and blue sheriff patroling the tank.

I have a pretty aggressive betta but he for some reason allows mollies, platys, guppies, etc and literally any other fish besides other bettas. I do recommend trying mollies but only if you have a 30+ gallon tank, or you could do platys with a betta in a 20. That works for me :)

One would think that the betta is stressed, but I haven't seen signs of stress from my betta. He still flares at the thermometer (its so weird xD) and eats, and will occasionally attempt to nip at my mollies and platys but they are too fast for him so he is active and happy :)

In my 29 gallon I've kept my betta with around 12 Glo Lite tetras with no issues at all, and a tiger nerite snail. There is also an older longfin blue danio who just won't die in there too. The betta has several places to hide and be by himself when he wants to. This betta will flair at his own reflection sometimes but never at the glo lites. I've had no issues with Nerites in any of my tanks. That same betta was in with some juvenile mollies that I had to grow out (never again!) but I found the mollies started nipping his fins as they got older. I've tried keeping a betta in my 10 gallon with amano shrimp and I'm pretty sure all the amano shrimp jumped out. I never saw the betta go after them but I did find an amano on the floor several times and... my cats love seafood. I've kept a betta in with guppies in a 20 gallon, that went well. He wasn't a very aggressive betta.

Could you do a list (longer the better) for useful/"utility" fish?
For example: Otocinclus/Plecos for algae cleaning, Rummy-nose tetra for ammonia detection (they lose the redness in their face when ammonia is high in a tank), Dojo Loach for weather prediction. Stuff like that, I want to put together a tank where it's like every fish in the tank has role to play and they aren't there just for show.

I watched how he acted towards them for 10 mins and didn't flare chase or try to nip at them once. I keep him in his own tank now (5 gallon with lots of plants) I've thought about tank mates for mental stimulation when I'm not around because I think he gets bored, but 5 gal is too small for other fish and I'm not a fan of snails or shrimp.

I honestly thought my bettas would eat most of them and there would be a few left in hiding but they're actually doing well! Though I wouldn't reccommend it not unless you know your betta well or you wouldn't mind them being eaten to test the compatibility out.

I've got a female betta in a 20 long, dirted and (at present) overgrown planted tank with black neon tetras, harlequin rasboras, cardinal tetras, khuli loaches, an assortment of snails and an unknown number of amano shrimp (I only see them once in a blue moon, so I'm never sure how many are in there... should be five but I suspect they're down to 3). No issues. In fact, I'd say I have invented a new classification of tank known as the Laid Back Tank. XD

Dragon (the betta) is the large and lazy queen; no one chases her, but she will take a notion to whip everyone up every now and then just to remind them who's boss. I used to have a male plakat and he was a little more active, but definitely more playful than anything else. He liked to scatter the tetras for the hell of it. Like, he'd pop up in the middle of them in a full flare, watch them scramble away then, zip back down into the plants - wouldn't chase any of 'em. Eventually the tetras figured out he wasn't going to get them so they wouldn't scatter anymore. He stopped doing it after that - got boring, I guess.

its just that they are cold water minnows.. max temp around 72, while bettas prefer around 78. glad its working out for you, maybe you can breed tropical temp resiliant white clouds, but typically white cloud minnows are more prone to sickness, disease, death etc. in warmer temps. My betta tank is a 10 with 1 male and 2 grass shrimp. i have my 12 white cloud in my coldwater fantail goldfish tank (67-72 degrees). if your minnows ever become disease prone, you know why is all these people are saying.

My only tip is that you have to base the tank additions on your betta's personality. I had one betta that never got along with anyone, even when he was in a 50 gallon, heavily planted, full of hiding spots tank. Nothing was safe with him, so he had to get his own tank. After a year or so on his own, he allowed a rescued feeder goldfish to live with him but never anyone else.
Benjamin P.

Dude, Betta fish are tropical and goldfish are cold water, either way one of those guys probably weren't happy.
CrazyNWildBaby
CrazyNWildBaby - 6 years ago
Typically, I would agree. But, that is why I gave his history. The goldfish was missing a lot of it's fin on one side and very slow moving, They were kept at the betta's standard temp and fed different pellets. They did share blood worms and brine shrimp, though. They lived together for 2 years before the betta passed away. He lived his full life span (almost 5 years), so it must not have been a issue for the betta. The goldfish has then transitioned into our goldfish tank and still lives there now, almost a year later.

I think when my betta dies I might move the pleco into my other tank, but it is stocked too. My other tank then is a 20 gallon female betta sorority. I have 4 female bettas, a spotted rubber lip pleco, 5 white cloud minnows, 4 cherry barbs (one was left over from a school of 6 that didn't work out so i got him friends to stop the fin nipping), 1 emerald cory catfish (left over from a school of 6 that ended up with dropsy), and three amano shrimp. In ten gallons: Betta with otos (I think there's 3 in there, I can never count them) and 3 ADFs. These otos were originally in my community tank and got kicked out for latching onto mollies.

In another ten: One betta and some sort of mixture of rasboras -- they're hets and espeis, I THINK. They all school together. Also one bladder snail that got in there and we've named Turbo. 7 rasboras, total.

In the past I've done a betta with black neon tetras, which looks great in a ten.

What I found didn't work was a betta in with mollies in a bigger community 20+ gallons. Not because it was aggressive, but because they were too food aggressive and it was hard to feed the betta while everyone was crowding.

I don’t think it was because of any of the fish because they were not consumed completely. Their bodies were just broke in half. Though, I could be wrong. If I had to do it again, I wouldn’t buy any shrimp (bc they don’t do anything, for my tank anyways) and I would have got nicer looking tetras/corydoras. But, overall my tank looks great and the fish get along really well.

a Betta with Ember Tetra, some Dwarf or Harli Rasbora's then something else (Panda or Pygmy Cory's or Kuhli Loach)
just not sure on how many fish to get (8-10 each of the tetra's/rasbora's and 4-6 of the corys/loach's?
would that be too many fish in a 34G?

I’m sorry to say, but I think your tank is over stocked. Usually a school of neon tetras need at least 25-30 gallons long. Especially with the Betta, and the harlequin rasboras, this is just too small for them. It can be hard to notice, but tetras can get stressed out if they don’t have enough room. I hope you take this into consideration, but otherwise good luck with you tank :)

Currently got a 35 gallon long with 7 harlequin rasboras and 5 Amano shrimp. It’s planted with driftwood and volcanic rock. I want to make it a community tank as I know I can add more fish but I’m not sure what to add?

My room mate had a 5gallon with a betta, three neon tetras and two cory cats. The betta left the corys alone 100% and they never bothered each other, but he would stalk and hunt the tetras all day long. One ended up dying, and another now has an issue with balance, likely from being rammed into. The betta was super aggressive. We had to say goodbye to the betta two nights ago because something caused his entire body to paralyze and he died. All of the other fish look very healthy, aside from the one tetra who sometimes struggles to right himself (It sort of comes and goes, but he has all of his color back and he eats and swims with his buddy just fine). And she now has a Golden Killifish in place of the betta.
Long story short, this betta did not like his neon tetra tank mates. Not one bit. But the corys worked out great.

Presley A you need at least a 10 gallon and also a peaceful betta to put them w tetras. You will find more success w rasboras in a 5 gallon w bettas bc the rasboras already naturally live in the wild w the betta, are smaller, and less active. Hengeli, lambchop, or neon green rasboras look awesome w bettas. Although I just edited and realized this isn't your tank lol.

I have a heavy planted 75 with 1 male and 2 female Betta's
Also 10 white cloud minnows
6 golden tetras
3 glass cats
3 albino bristle nose pleco's
6 or more Armano shrimp
1 upside down cat
I see the upside down cat more then the glass cats, which in. A way is a bummer. In another way I know where to find them and they have a good home so it's all good

in my 29 gallon planted tank i have 1 betta, 3 bolivian rams (all males), 3 neon tetras, 5 nerite snails, 10 amano shrimp, and a japanese flower shrimp. I originally had my rams in my 55 with my blood parrot and my spotted ctenopoma, but i moved them just as a precaution so they would not get eaten :). I was a little hesitant putting the rams in with my betta but it's been working out well and i've even seen them school/swim around together

I'll be the one comment on MTS not working. lol I have a betta I named Psycho who within 10 seconds of being introduced to his new home went on a snail biting rampage. I removed all the snails to another tank and discovered I missed one when I found Psycho carrying it around and banging it on the glass. Almost everyday he flares at his pellets before eating them. lol

I “had” my betta in a 20 long with 5 rummy nose tetras, 3 rasbora hets and 3 black khuli loahes. I come in after work to feed and i notice my betta is laying down in the sand in the corner of the tank. Then i see the tetras are nipping at him and bascially were beating him up all day, he basically looked like he gave up on life. Luckily i had a baby snail tank going in a 10 gallon so i took him out and put him in there for now while he heals up. They were doing fine together for about 2 months until this happened, really dont know why things turned either? Now he’s doing fine, his fins are growing out and hes freely swimming around again hiding in his floating log and sleeping in his coconut cave. So glad i didnt lose the little guy

Ive heard koi bettas are more aggressive. I have a female who chases tetras. It is now on its own. Have a baby pleco that was born in another tank and didn't want to risk it with the betta. Also she beat up a male betta instead of breeding. Is that true about koi bettas?

Koi are typically a plakat form, which tend to be a bit more high strung. My koi female is super active for a betta but very peaceful, as she lives with tetras and a pleco among other fish without even a flare.

I had some green neon tetras, since they were 6 (around 13 gallon) they got feisty and my betta being very passive was bullied to death by them :( (and then some other neons died to other neon's bullying) but overall I would think they are quite good tank mates.

120 galon planted tank. I have a male koi plakat male along with my many wonderful loaches. I have khulis hillstreams yoyo boyotoa skunk loach basicly everything but clown loaches i have a small dojo loach im growing out. Along with about 6 ottos 8 emerald corys God only knows how many trumpet snails 3 nerites 15 neon/neon green tetras 4 blind cave tetras and 8 purple het rasboras. Its a big tank and no one really bothers the beta. The only one that really hangs out around its cave (i put a half of a plant pot in along with the wood and plants and stuff) would be my one albino reticulated hillstream who cleans the cave pretty good. The blind caves also have their own terracotta pot. Granted it much larger but they never use it. I mostly find the khuli loaches and other nocturnals in it.

I have a couple Bettas. 29g with SAEs, German Blue Ram, Cardinal, Neon and Black neon tetras and some Harlequin Rasboras. Its a busy tank and Captain Fluffles (yes, that's the betta) often loves to dive down into my dense field of crypts and hide between the leaves/stems and poke his head out. Another is in a Fluval FLex 15 lightly modified to lower the flow with sunset guppies and he's super active. He swims with the guppies and has been nicer to the fry than the parents are. He loves flopping on the crypt or Melon sword leaves and lounging when he's not showing off his awesome red twintail finnage. Love Bettas in planted Community tanks!

1 Betta
8 Golden White Clouds
9 Neon Tetras
4 Ghost Shrimp

I seem to have a SUPER mild Betta, has no interest in any of it's tank mates (who often school close to him). I have 8 Golden White Clouds, 9 Neon Tetras and 4 Ghost Shrimp (though the day I introduced the Betta he did try to go for the biggest shrimp, who was having NONE of it. Gotta see the shrimp biff the Betta in the nose and he's never bothered the shrimp again).

My male halfmoon betta lives with a couple nerite snails, an amano shrimp, and a couple brown neocaridina shrimp in a moderately planted 5gal. Interestingly, he leaves the amano shrimp alone, but he'll take a swipe occasionally at the brown shrimp. I think it may have to do with the fact that the amano shrimp is clear, so the betta just doesn't register that he's there.

10 gallon planted. 1 halfmoon twintail betta, 1 peppered cory, 1 albino cory (both cories were kind of “leftover” from a previous tank, so I tossed them in, they had friends but they’ve died off over the years), school of 8 ember tetras (doing GREAT), 2 zebra nerites, 1 tiger nerite. I thought MTS were considered a “pest” snail? (Forgive me if I’m wrong.) I personally have a snail issue (I think they may be MTS and some “pond snails,” they hitchhiked on the plants I bought.) Will kuhli loaches try to chip away at that? I manage a pet store and do all of our fish orders and I purchased some black kuhli loaches actually so we have some right now. Thanks for any feedback and love the channel!

I have actually kept a betta fish with corys, clown loaches, mollies, neon tetras, plecos, synodontis catfish, a German blue ram, a goldfish, and even a gold gourami! The tank size was a 55 g community tank and I was lucky enough to have a nice betta fish who allowed me to put this great variety of tank mates in with it! I was very happy with my success! I caution anyone who reads this to hesitate to try and replicate this success but I hope atleast I can give ideas for others to try! Good luck

In densely planted tanks, shrimp are a great option, especially for the smaller ones. But I wouldn’t try your favourites/expensive ones first since some bettas really take to hunting them. But even that’s good food and enrichment for them if you have a lot of culls.

In 50L+ tanks (slightly bigger than a 10gal) neons are a great choice. I’ve found that most bettas will restrict the neons’ space too much in anything smaller, which leads to them fighting amongst themselves.
Definitely agree with the ember tetras though!

Most will be fine with any bottom dweller, provided you have the space and hides for them.

Guppies are often successful in 10gal+ tanks, but again I’d go larger.

Chilli Rasboras, and endlers are also good options for nano tanks.

Overall, if you provide enough hides and plants for them to inspect and hide amongst, they’ll be great with other fish
