I was thinking of getting a betta fish and I'm unsure of what tank size to get, I've been searching online and it says to get between 1-5 gallon tanks but I'm still unsure do you have any suggestions?

mynameisntJJ a 2.5 gallon would be great but you can get whatever you can afford. Basically, as long as it's not a fishbowl

+Anna Ritchey I use the National Geographic 10w Submersible heater. I got it for around $20 CAD from PetSmart, and I personally love it :)

I use Sony Vegas to edit my videos :) I actually really like this software, once you get the hang of it is really easy and straightforward, I think. Good luck with your videos!

The fact you quoted Harry Potter makes me very happy. Maybe I should take some advise from Dumbledore every once and a while :)

No, I've never tried putting them together..I would love to breed bettas but it's a big commitment I'm not sure I'll ever be able to handle! :) When I first bought her, though, she was in the pet store right next to the males and had some breeding stripes & was full of eggs because she was eyeing up the handsome males for too long! ;)

Do you find the 10 watt heater sufficient for this size tank? Is the temperature steady? Do you think it would be enough in a colder ambient temperature (not sure where you're located)? I'm trying to decide between the 10 watt and the 25 watt.

+BetterBetta Perfect, thank you!

+Jean X My 10 W works great in my opinion. It is technically made for tanks 2.5 gallons and under, but heats this three gallon (and even my 5's) up to 80F and keeps it steady there. Pretty much whenever I check my tank's temperature, no matter the time of day, its at 80F. I'd suggest a 10W would work great for this tank, but to be safe make sure it is one that shuts off automatically when it reaches 80F so it doesn't overheat. In a small amount of water, I wouldn't want to worry about having to plug it in and out. :) I'd assume that if the water/room were colder, it would simply heat the water more before its auto shut off. But I'd think a 10W would work just fine. Hope this answers your question! :)

That's not a female...
BetterBetta
BetterBetta - 8 years ago
+Nate's Pet Mates Although she has long-ish fins that definitely cause people to mistake her gender, I can assure you she is a female :) She has a very visible ovipositor, thin ventrals opposed to the males' blade shaped ventrals, she does not have a beard whilst flaring, is calm in nature, and has never blown a bubble nest in the year I have had her. All these traits can not be determining factors when on their own, but when they are so many combined, it's safe to say she is a female. You certainly aren't the first to think she isn't though, I even thought the store had mistaken her gender when I brought her home - however I did a lot of research and was able to confirm she's a girl. PS I may have found her full of eggs once. I say maybe because her belly area near her ovipositor was swollen and very white, suggesting eggs. I had just bought her at the time, and in the store she was placed very close to males, so she may have been "getting ready". I won't say I'm 100% sure on the egg part though, it's just a educated assumption. But I'm positive she is female :)

That is not a female betta.
BetterBetta
BetterBetta - 8 years ago
No worries! She doesn't look like the average female so it would be easy to mistake without really having her in front of you to study and research :)

Thanks! I have a sorority, so I should be able to tell the difference. facepalm
BetterBetta
BetterBetta - 8 years ago
You're certainly not the only person that thought that! Even when I bought her I was wondering if the pet store made a mistake while selling her. However after a lot of research, I determined she WAS in fact a female. She has a very prominent ovipositor (can be seen in that beginning clip where I show my tank), her ventral fins are thin opposed to knife-shaped, she has no "beard" while flaring and she - although this is not a determining factor- has never blown a bubble nest. She is also pretty pale in colour (but again, not a determining factor). Her long fins are definitely a point that causes confusion, although they are still shorter compared to my males'. I guess she's just special :) I may have also found her with eggs once. She was very bloated despite her low diet (I had just gotten her) and her belly was very white. Other female fish owners said it sounded like she was eggy. So, long story short, she is definitely female, but almost everyone who sees her thinks otherwise until they find her egg spot :)

Egg spots have nothing to do with anything. Ovaries are not visable.

One question.. Do you use aquarium salt for your betta's tanks? Or did you ever use it when you had them in one gallon bowls?
BetterBetta
BetterBetta - 8 years ago
Thanks, I love it too! I also wanted to get it for my males at one point, but also always ended up getting the shipwrecks and stuff like that for them. So when I got my female I went pink crazy :)

Yep, lots of people see her fins and are confused :) But yes, her ovipositor is VERY noticeable !
