What Betta Fish Heaters Do We Use?

Heaters for smaller betta fish tanks can be difficult to find. The aquarium heaters in this video we have found to be reliable and easy to use. The Marina Betta heater is listed for tanks 1.5 gallons and under but we are using it in our betta tanks that are 2.5 gallons and it works well. We use the Zacro heater in the 10 gallon tanks and they do a great job. Betta fish need heater, they are tropical fish and need temperatures between 78-82f. I have the submersible thermometer too, but the suction cup on mine got a lot of slimy white stuff on it after a few days. Did this happen to you too? What should i do? (i currently have the thermometer floating around the tank and not in the suction cup.)

Greets! I was hoping you could clarify something about the Marina Betta Heater -
I've been reading reviews online and most are indicating that this heater does not have an auto shutoff and some have had their tanks overheating above 80F. Have you had any issues with this? What would you recommend doing to ensure a small 1 gallon cube (it's temporary) doesn't get too warm?
Thanks in advance!!

Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
The tanks I keep them in are 2.5 gallons. It may make a difference in a much smaller tank. If you're not comfortable using it I wouldn't risk it.

Lifewithpets Thanks for the response! I'm just concerned about some reviews claiming temps going up to 90°+. But if you've not experienced anything like that, then I feel more comfortable considering it as a temp emergency heater (ambient temperature is just not keeping my betta warm enough now). Thanks again!

The heater doesn't have an auto shut off but is preset to 78f. Bettas like temperatures from 78-84F.

We use the marina Betta heater for our 2.5 gallons but I'm not sure whether it would be enough for 3 gallon.

Hello! So, I just got my 2.5 gallon betta tank all set up, but I still have a few questions. One, I currently have a zebra nerite snail and my crowntail betta. I was wondering if I could put anything else in with the snail and betta? Two, After my last water change, my tank has become a bit cloudy. I did a bit of research, and it said that this could be a poor rinse job of the gravel. Lastly, I was a little worried about my betta because he kept sitting in my plants, and on top of my heater. Is this normal? Thanks.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Congratulations on your new tank and betta. A 2.5 gallon is great for a betta and snail but too small to add any other fish etc. It could be not having rinsed the tank well or it could be new tank syndrome either way it will clear over time. Bettas should be fairly active but it is normal for them to rest on items in the tank. As long as he's not bottom sitting and is eating well it may just be the change to his new tank.

Hi ... I really like the Marina cubes... good products!
DebTim A CANADIAN Girl

I agree. Somethings work well for some but not others.. and they fish even though they are the same are different too. I appreciate you view point! It's unfortunate when people have to get aggressive about it. Such is life. Thanks for the encouragement and support.

As you say opinions are diverse and that's whats so good about this hobby. We can respect each others view points whilst not necessarily agreeing.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Marina do have some good products but I'd have to agree to disagree with you on the cubes. I think they're way to small for any fish. People often use these for bettas because they're under the misconception that they live in small puddles but this is just not true. Their water ways are actually quite large. There's no room for a filter or heater and at the very least they need a heater unless like me you live somewhere hot and can hold a constant temperature of 78-80f. For the price of them in the USA you can buy a full 10 gallon tank set up. Anyway I didn't set out to write an essay and of course this is just my opinion .....lol!

My absolute favorite heater is the Tetra HT Submersible Aquarium Heater. It is preset to 78 degrees, and it has a green light to show its on, and when its actually heating the water, the light is red. It is very cheap (like almost $9 on Amazon), but amazing quality I think. My friend has the Great Choice Mini Aquarium heater from PetSmart, and its horrible in her 2.5. It can get down to 70 degrees in there even when the heater is on. All that to say, if any of you guys are looking for a good heater, I totally recommend the Tetra HT Submersible Aquarium Heater. Also, I live in a climate that gets very cold in the winter. Works amazingly :)
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
I didn't want to say it in the video but this is the brand we got that was terrible for us. We got 3 of them and I returned all 3. Our house doesn't get cold and it couldn't even get the temperature to 74f it was awful. The ones I got are not expensive at all, $9 I think with the added bonus of the temperature can be changed and is not preset. Yes, Theo is very happy with all the space! He's so active.

Honeysimmer Really depends on your bettas character and the type of tank you have set up with what and how many you can accommodate for. Most times it's a learning curve with finding suitable tank mates, I'm lucky enough to have many tanks with an array of different fish species to try out, and if it doesn't work then I've got another tank I can put those fish in instead. But like I said, some bettas won't tolerate other fish while some do. Since my last comment I've got another Betta who does share his tank with 3 platies, the 3 guppies, a male sailfin Molly and a WCMM that was being bullied by his group, haven't had any problems with this one whereas my other Betta was scared to death and hid in the corner.

Donna what type of fish do you think would be best then?
Donna
Donna - 7 years ago
Greetje Buijert-Nijdam Guppies are listed as suitable tank mates (females as males are brightly coloured) BUT really it does depend on the character of the Betta if I'm honest. I tried 3 female guppies and my Betta hid in the corner for 4 days till I took the guppies out. I then tried with Lampeye which he wanted to eat so they got quickly removed. He shares his 10g tank with 5 Amano shrimps now, mine will always be a loner.

Another thing about guppies is, they are known to nip long flowing find/tails though so just be aware, it's the same with Neon tetras although they are also listed as suitable tank mates too if given the correct sized tank.

I agree with Donna, almond leaves are ideal, however are you sure it's fin biting. Females fins are short so it's almost impossible for them to reach them to bite them. Could it be fin rot?
