I hope I win a gift card, but I am really looking to trying the fry food I purchased as my mollies just gave birth to about 10 fry. :-) Wish I saw this before the large sponge filter sold out! Just watched your videos on filters and increasing surface area for bacteria. Thanks so much for all the information you provide as it really helps me as a dad just starting out with a new hobby to share with my 6 year old son. Merry Christmas, Cory!

Great video Cory!!!! Most people don't realize fish, similar to humans or other animals have different personalities! Not all bettas are aggressive but not all bettas are community fish. Also as you pointed out, bettas don't react the same to a species of fish. ALWAYS be prepared to have another tank, one thing people usually think is that when they have a shy betta in the community tank they think the betta will become open after a while. However bettas can get stressed and if kept stressed for too long, it can lower its immune system making it prone to disease and maybe death.

I have kind of a "is it worth a try" question, I have a planted 40 breeder with about 15 guppies that I don't really want to breed but they are breeding, my guppy strain allows for pretty quick swimming, is a slower Splendens worth a try? I would actually like for him to eat some fry to keep the population at bay a bit.
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 7 years ago
Sounds like it's worth a tr as it wouldn't be that hard to fix if it wasn't working out well.

Would Betta albimarginata be well and able to breed at pH 7.5? Serouslyfish says that 6.5 is the highest they can go, but they list that for all the wild bettas, which makes me wonder.
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 7 years ago
I've bred it at 7.2 myself But I haven't brought it up to 7.5 so I can't say for sure. I would guess that it can though.

I got a beta years ago, these lfs sold me neon tetras. They all went into a 20 gallon. I told the lfs they were sharing a tank. Well over next week, one by one, I lost a neon. I called the lfs. They say say yes the beta ate them most likely, because we feed our betas live. Duh thanks for selling me expensive neon live feeder fish. Urgh. Lol just sharing. Merry Christmas Cory n Jimmy, n to ur families to.

TheGolemHunter - 7 years ago
Danielle Russell Ohhh makes sense lol. I feed sometimes flakes, pellets, peas, frozen bloodworms and thinking about live brine shrimp from a diy hatchery. I think Im set lol.
Edit: So you got your betta from a community tank? My lfs just sells them in these glass vases and cubes.
Danielle Russell
Danielle Russell - 7 years ago
TheGolemHunter no they gave them blood worms, I believe. So me feeding flakes wasn't enough. So he went after my neons. So I've learned to ask, what do u feed ur fish. Lol

Syntax Creations
Syntax Creations - 7 years ago
Andrew B, it depends on the fish really, I've got an Imbellis (sp?) In a 2 with a couple of ghost shrimp and he nevers bothers them. Yet my Splendis actively hunts anything that moves.
Daniel Keeping Fish
Daniel Keeping Fish - 7 years ago
Not sure about 2G but I have cherry shrimp and a Betta in a 5G. It depends on the personality of the Betta.
I've had three Betta, two were fine with Cherries, one ate them straight away.
I have also kept Cherries with a range of community fish including Dwarf Gourami.
The only way to truly find out is to try it but perhaps an upgrade from the 2G may help if that's a possibility.

Here are a few tips on how to help it be successful.

I have a female elephant ear betta in a 5.5 gallon with 1 golden apple snail which is getting huge. Also 2 ghost shrimp and 2 Amano Shrimp. I’ve gotten myself a 40 gallon breeder which I’m in the process of buying everything I need to setup. Once I get the 40 cycled and going I plan to do a heavily planted with a fairly big piece of manzanita. Going to do a school of bloodfin tetra and a school of rummy nose tetra and a pair of Bolivian ram chiclid. Also plan on getting some cherry shrimp and some blue velvet shrimp and a few Cory cats. Can my elephant ear female betta live with the fish mentioned above?

Michelle S thank you very much for your thoughts. Is there anything I can do to try and discourage Rams from breeding? I guess that the correct terminology. I know nature will happen somewhere along the way lol. If I buy 2 male rams will the coexist in the same environment?
Michelle S
Michelle S - 7 years ago
Kevin Sanchez I personally wouldn't recommend it, but almost anything can happen with caution and the correct setup. Sometimes tetras will get nippy and all of the fish besides the corys are a heck of a lot faster than that betta. When the Rams start to breed they will most likely not like the betta. The long flowy fins are also a cause for concern. Overall I wouldn't not recommend it, but if you do decide to try it, be very cautious, and have a backup plan incase something goes terribly wrong.

I think solid gold aquatics did a video on how to travel with fish or something like that. But I believe the best way is to bag the fish as they would when you buy them and they get bagged.

Elliot Rhodes Bag it as if you were to bring it home from a fish store and if its a long trip maybe get a cold/heat pack to keep the water at a warm temp.

I tried my betta with my 3 five inch angels today. Th pe betta is male and fully grown and quite flowy fins but still quite fast. The angels are never aggressive and live in a 100 with female guppies, platies, tetras, danios, rasboras, minnows, kuhli loaches, assassin snails and ancistrus. The betta is also not aggressive, previously living with adult endlers and ramshorn snails. I moved the betta to the tank and one of the angels was really interested I don't think it was aggressive at all because it was not chasing or nipping and they were in the same tank for several days. However I noticed the betta changed. What used to be a really characterful and active betta changed to a betta that constantly sits above the power head, eating slightly less than usual but still eating. I got worried because I love that betta he is so individual and like you say, dog-like almost! Also he was like £70 from online and I was just scared so I moved him back to the 20 gallon.

Maddy Grabham sometimes it take time for fish to get used to the new environment. As long as the water parameters are fine, then he should adjust. He is probably used to being the big dog.
