The filter (bubbles) and pump add a lot more noise over the stock filter though I'll tell you that much, though that only really matters if you keep your tank in your room (like I do x.x)

I tested his pond (90% water change )also which he just dumps uk tap water straight in, no ageing...test kits said ammonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrate 20 ish... he swears by using Lilly pad plants .. could be lucky with uk water. Or the huge amount of plants in a fully established biological system
The only criticism I have so far is that gravel isn't the best substrate; uneaten food and waste often get stuck between the gravel and that just turns the substrate into an ammonia trap.
Sand or bare is best. Sand you can just stir up with your fingers while doing water changes, that's what I do. And bare bottom tanks are nowhere near as bad as people think, substrate is only really for aesthetic unless you have plants that need it.
I feel like if you don't have room for at least a 5gal, you shouldn't keep the animal.
Make sure you complete the nitrogen cycle though before adding a fish. Get your parents to help you research it and do it
bettas are so much more and have a great personality
Sponge filter
Air pump
Heater
Fish tank

The sponge filter you can make yourself. All you need is a water bottle, new sponge and some help.
The pump cost about 10 quid. 12 dollars.
The fish tank.... you don't need any thing pricey .i have a 10 litre. 2.5 gallon for 6 dollars. You can use a large storage container which you probably have at home !!
The heater is about 20 dollars..... but if your house is heated you won't need one if the temp is consistent and the right temp
A lot of the things shown here are extras.. do you need test strips or kit... probably no... but you will have to do larger water changes each week just in case. And do you need a water conditioner. Again no... not if you let your water age and do it old school
However.... if you don't use a test kit or stability or prime etc etc, you will have to rely on fish experience... or some one who has it.
My brother doesn't have all the kit I do. And I regularly give him advice on issues as he does not have the experience or wants to buy the kit ...so you def don't need all the kit, but you do need to know what to do with what you have.... also if you have any friends who are fish keepers they may have some spare kit. I've given away lots of prime sponges food etc etc to my brother.
My 2 x 10litre tanks cost 30 dollars for everything. Not inc food fish and water conditioner
