White Slime In Our Betta Fish Tank

We added some cholla wood to our 10 gallon betta fish and shrimp tank and within a few days it was covered with a white slime. After doing research it appears to be white fungus or bacterial growth. It is harmless to the fish and some fish, snails and shrimp will eat it. Lifewithpets I Set up a 80 litre tank had the same problem with white slime on the bog wood.. what I did was to siphon off much of the white slime a few times.... added 4 large snails slime disappeared within a week...

I have found that it will last a lot longer in newer tanks than in an older one. I have a 20 Long that took 3 months for it to go away. It was a new tank I had just set up. Then with my 20 tall it would last a few days and its been running for 2 years

just want to let you know that slime happened to me with a banana plant that I put in my aquarium and I could not get rid of it Corentine the plant, And try different things. I even poured. 3% peroxide on it in desperation and it did not go away. it did not kill the plant either. I didn’t want it to get on my other plant so I just threw it away. Wood, I just wanted to tell you I get a crockpot cooking bag, and I cook my wood all day long in my crockpot on high then low then high then low and it change the water and do it again the next day it really does a great job and then between the cooking /?boiling I scrub it with a nail brush really well.

When you did your research did this seem to be a fungus specific to cholla wood, or did you find instances of this on other types of wood?
CoroaEntertainment
CoroaEntertainment - 7 years ago
@Elizabeth Ann Other types of driftwood can also get it. Just ignore it and it will eventually go away once the good bacteria in your filter and substrate catches up. If you don't like the look of it and don't want to wait the 1-2 months it can take for it to go away, get some ghost shrimp or a bristle nose pleco. They both love it.

When you water change wipe it off, otherwise leave it. It will go away on its own.

I setup a brand new 3g tank for my betta complete with heater and filtration, used a small rock substrate a fake silk plant and a castle decor piece so not even any wood in there. Within a week if i disturbed any of the decor I would notice a ton of slime just come off it. If I dont disturb it you wont even see it, but after a month the water has a slight white tinge to it. I wanted to let the tank cycle as opposed to doing 100% water changes so i let the water sit for a month and im about to test for nitrates and do the first water change. I have read that this is common in new/uncycled tanks so hopefully since I let it cycle once I clean it out it won't return.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
So hopefully you'll have nitrates then. A month is a long time to go without doing a water change while the fish is in the tank.

Lifewithpets I didn't use an ammonia source. I threw my betta right in. Used the betta conditioner by seachem. Monitored ammonia everyday waiting for the first sign of ammonia to put some prime in and detoxify it but it's not reading any ammonia at all.

What did you use to cycle the tank? What was the ammonia source to start the cycle?

Hydrogen Peroxide treatment or buy Kordon "Rid Fungus" will clear it up immediately. My Betta fish was not harmed by the fungus by the way. I highly recommend the Kordon because it is all natural remedy.

hi, sorry that this comment is late but...... I have been having issues with my plants in my tank. I have a 32l (8.5gallon) betta fish tank that is split into three. I want it to be a fully planted tank but i just can't keep them alive. I have a mix of anubias, amozon sword, micro sword and a type of crypticorne. i have a strong light on the tank and i have been dosing the tank with Florish, Flourish excel and Florish iron. My light is on a timer for 8hours of the day but i still seem to get algae. PLZ HELP ME
Mia Elizabeth
Mia Elizabeth - 7 years ago
Lifewithpets thank you so much, I will try what you said
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
I would try reducing the lighting down to 5-6 hours a day, the plants you have a mainly low light plants so if the light is too strong it will encourage algae growth.

Hmm I was getting the exact same thing with my new plants I ordered from H2O plants.I did not bleach them because they were all jungle val. As soon as I saw it I did a 100% water clean in the tank they were in, and tried removing it with my hand. I trimmed the vals greatly because (when I got them) they were mostly dead, and didn't have a chance of revival. All went well after the trimming and cleaning, but a day later, it came back on one of the plants. Not nearly as bad as before, but the vale have jumped back (sort of) to a stable health.I tried researching but I found absolutely nothing...what do you think it is?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
The fungal/bacterial growth can happen on plants too. It's not as common though. Jungle val usually doesn't travel well but once cut down it will grow back.

should get rid of those if it attaches to your fishes it's going to start eating the part where it attaches, unless you get that blue stuff. i had a spider something driftwood that stuff kept going on it no more how many times i cleaned, lost one of my fishes like that, the white stuff attach itself to the fishes tail and the tail dissolved then it happened again with my betta then reached, says the blue stuff helps and it did, took three or four days till it was off her. i started with 5 to 20+ shrimps now there is 4 grown ones left and some i dont know how many fries.

edited: but for some reason it doesn't grow on the dark driftwood

I'm so glad that the little shrimp are doing such a great job at clean up! How long did you quarantine them before distributing them into your other tanks? And does the individual who you got them from sell them/ offer shipping? I don't have the slightest clue on how to choose a reliable seller!

Urgent help, so my fish poop has been hiding for a while as i check the tank all the time. One morning woke up and lots of poop, removed around 60% the rest is hard to siphon as it gets into the gravel, should i let it turn into ammonia? And then do 50% water change next week?

I think its fungus. But you're right its harmless.

I have some sipder wood in my betta tank and the fungus is only starting go go away now. I got my betta on the 3rd of may but the tank was set up before hand so for me its been about 2 months.

In my comunity tank i never noticed it because my platys and snails did a good job at keeping the wood clean.

Had the same issue with driftwood i bought back in January or February and it was mostly cleared up within the first couple months, but I do have a thicker chunk of wood that is still seeping out the white slime. I have heard many places that shrimp and snails work really well together. if you are worried about an outbreak of snails I'd suggest getting some small mystery snails. They have more particular breeding requirements vs other types.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
I will be putting snails in the tank but not ones that can take over the tank. I have several different types of snails in other tanks but this tank I want very specific things in as it is going to be a breeding tank for profit.

In my personal experience on all pieces of drift wood I have put in my aquariums besides a huge piece I put in a recently established tank this stuff is extremely common the white stuff will show up after about 2 weeks or so, just with regular maintenance; I personally just brush it down with a aquarium devoted toothbrush and it almost always clears itself within a week.
