A betta was the first fish i ever bought for myself once i moved away from home. My little guy is a bit of a mess tbh, he has no immune system, he's way too small for an adult male betta, doesn't flare really, doesn't make bubble nests, and is generally as aggressive as a moss ball. He came down with a seriously nasty case of fin rot for 4 months that took 8 different medications to treat, and even after that his fins grew back really weirdly so he still looks a little dishevelled. Even so he's always so happy to see me everyday, always coming over the say hi and sometimes he eats out of my hand. He's such a funny little thing.
(Luckily the pet store i got him from doesn't use the cup method for selling betta, he had a 2 gallon to himself.)

I have a beta fish with a ton of personality and he's super playful
I have a decent sized tank and I was about to refill my tank because some of the water in my tank evaporates so the filter water was pouring into the bottom corner and my beta was doing flips (he was not injured there were no parasites he was just having fun) and overall just playing with the small current. Then I added the water and he stopped

If you buy a betta fish, you save that one, but you are not helping the others.
To save all the beta fish it would be necesary to create a new breed of betta fish, less agressive that could live with other fishes
I am not a fish expert, just saying. weirder has happened.
(don't misunderstant, I still love this videos and want one XD)

Keep all harmful chemicals away from the aquarium. Cigarette smoke, paint fumes, and aerosol sprays can be toxic if they are absorbed into the water.

Please soak the Blood worms before eating, so they wont swell up inside your fishes stomach, causing Constipation. And they are Exotic fish, so they need a heater, and Filter. Also, feed them as much as their eyeball, because when they are full, THEY DONT STOP EATING, which can lead to Death, or Constipation, leading to death

... support petco, buy betas there, they will keep restocking them. so dont support them at all if u can. be well prepared! adopt animals don’t buy them from a chain. if we stop supporting petco and petsmart they hopefully would stop stocking them. but obviously not everyone will stop supporting it. but the more money you give them the more they will stay alive.

I’ve got a beautiful beta named Waffles in a 5 gallon along with 3 panda platies, Oreo, sprinkles, and Rose. (I’m getting a 10 gallon in a few weeks) I have a heater, filter, and lots of live plants. I feed him, and the others every day and have an LED light to help the plants. I however did not place him right by a window, he rests on a tank stand by one. The platies and Waffles get along great and are all happy and healthy and eat regularly. The things that you need to improve your tank are~ a heater, and a filter. The comments section needs to chill about the petal betas, yes the way that petal treats their betas is literal animal abuse, but by buying a beta you do save it. That’s really all, I hope this helps~

I am concerned with the tank being in a window. Massive fluctuations in temperatures!

Filtration is not essential in betta tanks... if the owner is diligent with the water changes. You never see Betta breeders in the Far East using filtration, just laborious water changes.

On the subject of the big box store and how they keep their bettas, they are in a great position to educate the public, insist on minimum tank requirements and therefore make bigger and more profitable sales to potential betta owners.... but we all know that is never going to happen!

Honesly this betta tank is trash, you don’t have a filter or heater, probably because this tank is small as fuck. Also, you threw in way to much “dried up bloodworms”, which are bad for your fish without soaking them.

Big City Bettas

No because, gold fish like cold water, Betta Fish are tropical, and they like it warm 76-82 degrees. If and when the goldfish die, the Betta will feed of of it.

100. comment for Why You NEED A Betta Fish NOW!

1 FKT
1 FKT - 7 years ago
Hate to see the bettas in the cups BUT when you buy them from Petco/cup-keeping-stores, they just feel there is a demand so they just buy more and put 'em in little cups. And the people breeding these fish just continue to breed more like puppy mills, except using fish. You may buy 2 or 5, but there the other 50 who will sicken and die in the little cups. People also buy these fish because they're beautiful and think they don't need any maintenance, have the fish for a few weeks and it dies because the buyer has no idea how to care for them. Lots of people don't even know these are from the tropics and need to be kept in warmish water, or that they shouldn't be fed dry food all the time. So the fish live minimal lives for a minimum amount of time.

Where is his filter? Where is his heater? How could you possibly tell people to buy fish from places that treat them terribly? the more you buy animals from places that treat them terribly, the more animals they will stock and treat terribly. Why do so many people not understand the basic concept of supply and demand?

Honestly, Jeff doesn't seem much better off than he was in the vase...

I have a couple of questions about Betta fish,
Does it matter how big the tank is? Like can they have really big tanks to themselves
What rocks aren't okay in a tank with them, Is Quartz okay?
xindx
xindx - 7 years ago
Crazzy Toonz a tank over 2.5 gallons is good, the bigger the better :) For rocks you should boil them before adding them to a tank to get rid of any germs but make sure it has smooth edges so it doesn't tear your betta's fins

Wanna save betta lives but not make Walmart/Petco etc get money for more abuse?

steal em

walmart- just... get it and walk away

petco etc- get a bag, fill it with fish friendly water, open disgusting cup, pour that beautiful baby in, boom

for the second one, it's way easier, I'm pretty sure the bags don't have price tags so no getting caught??

also if you do that and you are full of extra tanks and supplies in your house

get a couple every time you go in!! you'll be appreciated for your kind heart and known as the "fish whisperer" xp

look at those lil faces, who wouldn't want a betta?

don't tell people to steal.

stealing bettas from Walmart/Petco wont affect their profits much and they will just replenish the stock. Instead of stealing them maybe add a sticker on the tank with a message that will make people aware they are being abused.

Aww! I'm so sorry

it'll probably work, just make sure there aren't any people watching you

And if you have a purse you can go in the bathroom (if they have one) and put him in there (will definitely work if you switch the cups so the price tags don't go berserk when you leave)

I've never tried any of this so... xp

Buying a betta from Petco/Petsmart won't change ANYTHING about consumer demand or how many bettas are put into those conditions. Both stores will never stop stocking bettas unless a huge amount of people ((and i'm talking an extremely large public movement)) stop buying bettas. Saving one life is better then having them all rot away in cups.

I've heard some people say that it is possible to house two male betta fish together, given that their tank is large enough to provide enough space for each of them. (10+ gals?) Is this true? Also, do you have any recommendations for brands of 10 gal tanks I should consider? Thanks!
Princess Lunchbox
Princess Lunchbox - 7 years ago
Daniel Floyd betta splendens were bred to fight the males. That is the sole purpose behind their domestication some 600 years ago. They were developed to be male aggressive and they are. You'd be tempting fate. Females can be housed in a community of 6+ when done properly but many of these fail as well. Males bettas should never be housed with other bettas.
MintChocolate
MintChocolate - 7 years ago
Daniel Floyd 10 gallons? That's impossible. 10 gallons isn't big enough for two betta fish. They will find each other and they will kill each other. 10 gallons isn't big enough for two bettas to claim territory and avoid each other. maybe 60 gallons very heavily planted with lots of other fish? Even then it's a big risk
Catherine Pundmann

Princess Lunchbox

Brianna Underwood That actually isn't way too much food. He shouldn't be feeding freeze dried but that amount is correct for a frozen or live food. Most bettas are underfed.

I work in a petstore and I literally get into so many arguments w customers because I try telling them what they need for their betta fish and how big of a tank they need. Sucks how they rather go with a .25 gallon "bowl" that's almost the same price as a 2.5 gallon tank (yeah wtf). I try so hard to educate people but it's come to the point where I just say the minimum tank size is 1.2 or 2.5 because I just know they will never go for anything bigger or they'll straight insult me if I try otherwise. The problem is these people who are so ignorant when it comes to fishkeeping. Yes corporate animal stores aren't great, but if only people were willing to be educated, then a lot can change like those stupid myths about bettas. But I realize that's too much to ask for lol

I've seen local pet stores spread lies about fish and keep bettas in cups still. Sometimes I see fish with ick and they still keep them in the connected tanks which horrifies me. If the store manager only cares about making money and if the employee only cares about getting the 8 hours over with, the fish will suffer. If even one of these are met, either the employer wants to actually have healthy fish on display or the employee want the fish to live happy lives after leaving the store, makes all the difference in the world.

Shawnlyq
Shawnlyq - 7 years ago
Haven't had any experience with Betta before because I always thought they have to live the solitary life in a small tank..

Yeah, I've read many horror stories on betta jumping to their deaths and I certainly don't want that to happen that's why I put Bob into my hand and close out all opportunity for him to jump before entering his new tank.

The pots idea were quite cool, I probably will set them up in my upcoming new tanks(if I could get any :>)

I'll try the mirror trick sometime soon and thank you for being such help in this journey with Bob! I've made a bonsai resting tree for Bob for some shade as well as a resting bed for him too! Check out the latest vid I've posted and maybe you could give me some pointers on the tree..(cause I'm feeling somewhere is off about that tree)

Finally a very big thank you Mei Slija for helping out!

Nicholas Bennett No, they will not. Certain plants can lower these levels amazingly well, but the size of the tank has a play in this as well as the amount of plants/water quality and even the amount of sunlight and fish in the tank. You cannot stick a plant in a tank and say done. It doesn't work like that. In fact, some plants when decomposing and or dying off can harm your fish particularly in a smaller tank as there is less water for the decomposing plant life to filter into.

Think of that old science test in school. Take a small cup and let a single drop of ink spill into it. Now dip a white napkin in it and see how strong that ink is despite the water. Now, take a very large bowl and do the same thing. A very big difference. Only in this case you have to always remember; there is something living in that cup you are spilling ink into.
Mei Silja
Mei Silja - 7 years ago
No expert, simply out of all the fish people can own, Betta are my favorites followed by the little guppies~

Just be sure the bowl is small enough you can cover the top once you lift it free from the tank. People rarely get to see Betta’s jumping but they do jump and it’s fast!

Coconut husk, I’ve never thought to use that and I don’t know much about it. I did look it up and it seems very popular! If you decide to use it just be very sure you have gone over the whole thing with a fine sander so if Bob should brush against it or even lay down inside it won’t snag his tail.

I have used Terracotta pots myself because I have always made it look like someone has accidentally flooded their garden. XD A bit of fantasy! The natural look is always beautiful and often has that wild feel so I hope you make an updated video with what you do!

No worries, Betta fish have huge personalities! Some males just don’t flare, and are not aggressive in the least. Please don't mistake this as an okay to house another male with him. Huge no no. No fish with large colorful fins ever! It is good every now and then, maybe once a month or so; you give him something to flare at if he wants to. A mirror works so he can see himself. This will give Bob some sense he is protecting his territory from an intruder. Never leave the mirror there and once he has flared slowly move the mirror away. It will be as if he scared another male off. I’ve seen others do this to great success.

Nicholas Bennett Though plants will utilize nitrate from the cycle breaking fish waste down they cannot survive just on that alone.
Shawnlyq
Shawnlyq - 7 years ago
The insight you've provided certainly shows you are rather the expert in this Betta field alr!

Right! I would get a small bowl to move in next time to prevent the stress upon moving. Great pointer!

As you diagnose on the tank, I myself also think that it has insufficient hiding space in such a long tank. I'm thinking of removing the stone henge on the right of the tank and replacing it with a DIY moss tree.

As for the terracotta pot, as much as I want to add it, I would use a much more 'natural approach'. Could I use a coconut husk(maybe with moss over it) instead? I would certainly love the natural approach though!

Honestly, Bob haven't been showing any sign of aggression, especially whenever I place my finger or anything pointing at him, he just be checking me out and following without flaring at all. I know this is uncommon but could it be linked with illness. However he is just eating fine as well as fins were fan out graciously along with swimming well. Am I just overthinking into it? :'(

Hies! I must say that I am no expert in Betta Fish, but I do have a lot of experience through my parents and more recently some friends who breed them. You have a beautiful Betta I must say, and I am very jealous
you have a crown tail! Those are annoyingly rare where I live.

One tip I can give for you and Bob, the next time you must move him. Personally I suggest a cup, as you can
place your hand over this easily. Plus, everyone has a cup, just be sure it’s not plastic and you have rinsed it. This will keep pressure off his organs, be less stressful and not risk his tail or him jumping out as there will be water with him.

For his hide, while you do have one I noticed your tank is in a bedroom? This means a lot of activity and movement so perhaps get him a terracotta pot and angle it in a way that he doesn’t have to see the front of the tank. Don’t worry about him hiding away too much, male Betta love showing off so he won’t stay in there. This just gives him a place to go if he feels nervous when you first appear in the room, or if you are messing with bedding/clothes. Those flying cloths can be fast and bright like a flaring male.
Shawnlyq

We have 4 bettas in 1 tank...2 males and 2 females. They get along fine because there is plenty of room and food and most important, there are plenty of plants. in the wild, bettas typically live in calm areas of streams where there are tons of weeds and things for them to hide in. if you are going to have a tiny tank like this one, then you can only have one male. But if you have a 20 gallon or larger, I have never had any problem having two males and two females in the tank at a time. primarily, you want to block the outflow from an over the side filter to make sure that the water remains calm. you can do this by putting filter floss or something similar at the downspout from the filter to allow the water to drain down into the water versus pouring out and disturbing the water column. as with all fish, you have to keep up on water changes, but I find that heavy heavy plant life doesn't bother these guys a bit.
Nonya Busnezz
Nonya Busnezz - 7 years ago
Princess Lunchbox that may be a fair statement to say that it is for advanced people. It may also be fair to say that only certain fish are going to get along with other fish. But in general I am simply telling you that factually over the past 40 years that I have been raising fish since I was 10 and I am now over 50, but I have without any problem whatsoever kept multiple male and female bettas in the same tank. So while you may wish to come up with all sorts of reasons why it hasn't worked for you, I'm telling you it has worked for me in the past, and is working for me presently. In addition, my daughter is hardly an expert fishkeeper and does nothing more than sprinkle in fish flakes for me once a day. so again, to reiterate, despite some of you folks having no luck doing this, and despite your arguing with me as if I have some Grand desire to mess up people's fish tanks by giving them bad advice, I am telling you that I have done it successfully and I'm doing it right now. anyway, good luck, sorry you have not had success with it, and I'm done arguing about it.
Princess Lunchbox
Princess Lunchbox - 7 years ago
Nonya Busnezz In some cases, yes you absolutely can. But the average fish keeper won't be able to pull it off. I have experimented in years past with a 150 gallon and several males and females I spawned myself and raised up together. Some males simply cannot be kept in a tank with other fish. In your case you've done everything you can to recreate a natural environment and obviously have fish that are content to claim and stick to their own little territories. Some males wouldn't be so content with that. In the wild their territories can spawn 3 feet or more. It depends on the fish. It's uncommon in betta keeping that someone is 1. experienced enough and 2. happens upon fish with more suitable personalities. It would be unwise to recommend this for anyone simply because it's an advanced fishkeeping project not for novices. I personally find it impressive as it speaks of your ability as a fish keeper, that being said I still don't think others should try it.

Nonya Busnezz
Nonya Busnezz - 7 years ago
Princess Lunchbox. I respectfully disagree. Your assumption is that only one male betta lives in any given stream in the wild and would never come across another betta. in practice, in a larger aquarium, just as in the wild, the bettas will go their separate way and claim their own territory and typically do not bother each other at all. Unless there is a territory dispute, due to a very small area for them to live, or a food dispute because of too little food, I have never in my 45 years of raising fish, including tons of bettas, have never had a problem. Again, to be clear, I have tons of plants in my betta tank, and I personally believe this is the key to them a living peacefully. I never have bettas die prematurely. Anyway, you may want try it sometime. I assure you I am not lying about this. It works fine.

RICK LETT Funny, we started breeding around the same age. It can be done somewhat inexpensively but the amount of effort involved, not to mention the prices of things these days makes it more expensive these days. Also having continued breeding into adulthood I have learned and grown and overtime upgraded to be the best system for my fishes quality of life. About $4200 invested in my breeding barracks and grow out shelves. I also strive for the very best for my fish. The basic setup including spawn tank, growout tank, individual 1 gallon jars, heaters, sponge filters, air pump, live food, lights, etc all add up very quickly. Easily $1000+ for the bare essentials. If you're going dirt cheap even with plastic tubs, no lights or live food it's still a few $100. Once they're individually jarred the amount of work is quadrupled not to mention most people aren't gonna buy one unless it's a high quality, good looking fish so you end up with a bunch of unwanted fish.
RICK LETT

The Terminator i recommend ada soil, this soil will give nutrients to the plant so that they will grow faster, but before you put the soil put the garden soil first, garden soil have ammonia in it,ammonia is the food of the beneficial bacteria that protects the fish from toxic things also I recommend getting a CO2, the CO2 will make your plants very green but be careful when you set up a CO2 container you will need assistance to do this, your tank will cycle fast when you follow this instructions.

9 years is rare even with the best of care.think of a 9 year old betta the equivalent of a 20 year old dog it's great they lived so long but they certainly aren't the standard.

I should know how hard it is to get a betta to live 9 years cause I have had a betta live that long.
Princess Lunchbox
Princess Lunchbox - 7 years ago
DMAN D honestly bettas can live well over 9-10 so 4 really isn't very good. Temperature fluctuations too low will drastically affect their lifespan so though you are touting despite improper care your betta managed to survive a few years it still died very young and isn't something you should be arguing. Maybe listen to some of the betta people on here that are trying to help you better the lives of your fish instead of defending bad husbandry by citing a fish that died fairly young as proof it's perfectly fine for them.

Yes the ammonia has always reads 0. The tank is 5 gallons with 50% weekly wc so it stays good plus the big plant load.
Brianna Harter
Brianna Harter - 7 years ago
plants mainly use nitrates and can't make up for the lack of benifceail bacteria the filter is supposed to contain.your betta may have lived to be 4 but did you ever check to make sure their enivorment was actually heathy for them cause bettas can surive horrible condations.

room temperature varies from preson to preson.my room keeps the water at 28 c cause I like it hot in my room.but in other poeples homes it can get pretty cold.
DMAN D
DMAN D - 7 years ago
If your tank is planted and you keep up with the wc your fish will be fine. I don't run filters with my bettas and my last betta lived to 4. The ambient room temp can drop to below 10c and that is wayyy to cold for bettas.I am not saying you should not run them I do advice them for beginners but it is not needed.
Brianna Harter
Brianna Harter - 7 years ago
a filter is more important then a heater.

a filter processes highly toxic ammonia into mostly harmless nitrates.water changes aren't going to help when the ammonia is being broken down.

you can keep the room warm enough to keep the tank at the right temperature but you can't water change enough to off set the ammonia spike your fish will constantly be going trough.

I know I know, I can hear it, "your wasting your breath" your stupid to say this"!
Maybe, but things can and do change, generally if the public outcry is big enough and loud enough things change

Oh and while writing to that corporate megastore, send a copy to your local political office.

There are a lot of unhappy and annoyed people out there... these comment sections prove it!

Actually it is saving if the betta was mistreated and was sick/dying. Buying a sick animal to save it is still saving it. It doesn't mean you support the marketing and selling of bettas in cups, or you saved the world. It means to THAT betta something because you saved him.

My 2 cents.

I have a female in a 2.5 gallon, and she is the most active little swimmy thing. Seriously, great health, and she was from my local petsmart. I don't mind buying from my petsmart as they take really great care of their animals, even their bettas and goldfish. Anyways, female bettas are GREAT starters, even easier than males because they have smaller fins and are less prone to fin rot and tearing :)

By going to Petco and purchasing bettas you might be saving one betta from a sad life in a cup, but you are only supporting the practice and the store by purchasing their product. By buying that one fish you are telling the store "Hey I love that you keep your fish in subpar conditions here is my money and support to keep doing this" and it'll only fuel the cycle of keep hundreds and thousands of animals in poor condition. You have a very large fan base and I'm a little miffed that you would make such a misinformed statement to so many people to go out and support places like Petco.
I would instead implore people to find local stores and breeders who keep their fish happy and healthy and support those stores instead.

Big City Bettas
Big City Bettas - 7 years ago
Deadpan Drip Actually as long as water quality is maintained there is nothing wrong with temporarily housing bettas in a smaller container while they grow out and must be separated. Yes, most breeders like myself cannot keep enough 2.5 gallons to house all the fish from a single spawn that might require individual jarring, so we use smaller jars and much more frequent water changes. It's common sense.

Actually betta fish usually survive their time in petco/petsupermarket, the fact that a store sells them isn't the big problem, it's the false advertising that the people buying them can keep them in 1/2 gallon tanks or tiny little bowls.

Unxpekted I see your point, but I breed as a hobby because I want to produce healthy, vital bettas that will live long lives. I owned petstore bettas for years and it was heartbreaking how young they would die. I started breeding years ago and soon saw how proper care and diet early in their lives can increase their overall lifespan. I put at least 2 hours into feeding and water changes every single day because I want to produce healthy fish. I don't charge much for my fish as it isn't about making a profit, merely trying to cover the cost of keeping and raising so many fish. I breed betta splendens because I love them. They are amazing little fish. I am passionate about spreading the word of hobby breeders so people don't have to support those chain pet shops by buying fish that won't live nearly as long as they should all because they weren't given a good start or bred responsibly. Instead they can support the people who raise these fish simply because they love them, not to make money. Which would you rather support? If enough people started buying from breeders Petco and PetSmarts demand would drop and so they would decrease supply thus keeping fewer bettas on those shelves. Small changes can be made if people are properly educated on their opinions.
Unxpekted

It's more important for Petco to employ people that actually care about fish because these are the people that interact with these uninformed betta owners. Spontaneous betta owners do not shop at local fish stores, they are prone to go to either of these 2. Petco is not going to go out of business and close down their fish section just because of a few fish lovers boycotting these cups, in fact I've just been to a local fishstore with wonderful displays and beautiful tanks full of exotic fishes and guess what? Bettas still in those little cups. It's not Petco and Petsmart, it's the betta industry. Unless you yourself is the owner of the shop, sorry, just got to look past it and hope for the best. If you work at one of these stores, don't be afraid to educate your customers. It might be these betta's only hope because they are at your store and you can use your valuable experience and insights to pursuade that customer to bring home a 5-gallon tank instead of a bowl. My friend has done it before.

StoryShepherd Very true! I found a more local fish store (which is where I got my most recent fish). They don't only sell freshwater fish, but also some live plants, coral, saltwater fish, and turtles! I love just casually going there just to look around. They also have so many pet supplies there (and the siphons there are much nicer and easier to use than the ones at Petco).

However they do sometimes put the bettas in cups. They are usually in a tank, but when a kid is like "Can I look closer at that one?" or something, they'd put them in a cup for the sole purpose of letting them see the fish up closer or taking them home. I think it's a bit better than Petco, seeing as they do get a tank and are cupped every once in a while.

I agree there are a lot of people who don't care or just don't know, but I think having the mentality of "nothing will ever change" is dangerous and prevents even the possibility for change. This isn't true. They will continue to buy fish regardless if you abstain. There are far too many uneducated people willing to purchase bettas without looking up or heading the advice of someone more knowledgeable than themselves. Believe me, as a manager of a corporate petstore, there are far too many willing to throw a poor betta in a bowl without a second thought.

Careful mike : don't over fees your bettas, because the males will eat until they bloat and explode, all males do that.
Mike Hamada
Mike Hamada - 7 years ago
Princess Lunchbox I know but dry food or not they will not stop eating. Because in the wild males need to make sure they ate as much as they can, since they will have no time to eat when they have nests with eggs to handle. And these domestic males also inherited this behavior, I've tried giving them snails, and dead fry they still kept eating I stopped experimenting frozen food, when I noticed that he ate so much, his stomach was about bloat, so I had to fest him for 2 days for his own good, and Betta poop is the weirdest it doesn't look like that or other fish ...
Princess Lunchbox
Princess Lunchbox - 7 years ago
Mike Hamada It has little to do with the amount of food given and way more with if it's dry food or not. If it's dry the food swells in their stomach and affects their swimbladders and can cause constipation which is deadly for many bettas. This is why it's recommended to always soak all dry feeds before feeding to your betta.

I actually reported a local petco by me (there's two, the one thats slightly further away is MUCH better) about a week ago, and I went back and everything is soo much better actually. Clean cups, healthy bettas, I found one that had been slightly overfed, but lets be honest, the workers can't be there all the time, so something is bound to happen. I'm sure if you did what I did, things will change cause petco, the company is strict on animal cruelty (the stores sometimes, not so much). Just go on the website and start a live chat with a rep, and just tell them the location of the store and the conditions of the animals and things should turn around. If you go back and find them the same way, report again. And mind you, it may not be the store itself, it may just be the people that are working in the aquatics area

I Am Darb my friend who works at one of the big box stores puts her Bettas in the big tanks according to compatibility. Customers get surprises when they walk past and go "is that a betta in there?" And start asking questions. It's a really nice effect, since people seem to feel challenged when seeing Bettas in anything but little cups at a pet store. Pet stores don't understand that going against the status quo is not a bad option. Of course it's impossible to put a betta into every tank, but putting a few looks really good and gets people thinking. A happy betta in a ten gallon with plenty of space and live plants and compatible tank mates looks really great, but you can never communicate that without demonstrating it at the petshop where it's done with professional supervision.

That's not true, it depends on the people there. It's frustrating for someone who actually cares about fish that needs to work with the rest of the workforce who doesn't give a shit (probably loves cats/dogs and not fish or reptiles) so it's actually much worse at Walmart which is not even a petshop, where the employees give even less shits about fish and probably are underpaid and not enjoying or getting any achievement in their work.

Sadly, these fish are very cheap most of the time. The shops are not going to put them in bigger aquariums because then it will cost them too much. And if they sell them on a higher price, people are going to buy them somewhere else. We need better laws, because to most people, fish are just a decoration. Im sorry if my grammar sucks, english is not my native language. Cute fish by the way.

Person On Youtube Person On Youtube in relation to your above question, it all depends on the temperament of the fish what you can keep. Not all female betta fish get along in sorority tanks with other female bettas. In fact I've heard of way more horror stories from Betta sorority tanks then positive experiences. not going to say you can't make it work because I know many people can, but I think it's an advanced tank to have that isn't for everyone. But if you want to add more fish to help stimulate your betta and make him more active I would highly recommend it. It worked for my fish who was in tank a lot like yours at first. I upgraded him to a 30 gallon community. don't judge his aggression based on flaring at himself. My betta used to flare at himself all the time but was very peaceful with other fish who didn't look similar in species . That's the key, they can't see the other fish as a threat and they won't if they look different. But if you have any question at all about his temperament and sharing territory I would highly recommend you get bottom feeders that are quicker and more agile than the betta if chased, like a corydoras. many people recommend tetras and have good luck with them but you have to be careful because certain types of tetras are known to nip fins and shouldn't be put in a betta tank for that reason, but there are plenty that don't nip as often and others are a hit-or-miss like neons. Rasbora, plecos, feeder guppies and any fish that doesn't have flowing fins or extremely bright colors should be okay, again provided they don't nip or pick fights. No gouramis though, they are closely enough related to bettas where it can definitely trigger aggression in some cases. I would be more concerned about your betta, male or female, getting bullied by other fish than the other way around. Provide plants and a hide or two so the betta will feel like he has privacy and the other fish aren't continuously in his direct line of sight. They should have places to duck and hide behind so the betta will lose interest in chasing and flaring at them if that's the case, but that behavior should probably go away after he gets used to his new tank mates. if he's flaring but not nipping or biting them, give it one to two weeks in a heavily planted tank and see how he adjusts. I think that's the key to making sure aggression doesn't happen with a slightly temperamental fish.

Person On Youtube. Again...yes they will be aggressive...when they have a territorial dispute. But this is no different than most aggressive fish. Certainly don't put 2 males in a .5 gallon tank and expect them to get along. The black Convict cichlid is so mean I have had 3 inch convicts chase 12 inch Oscars and Severums out of their territory. So yes, Bettas will fight for their turf, but they don't seem to go seek out fights outside their territory. I have been raising fish for over 40 years and have kept multiple male and female bettas in the same tank...it just had to be big enough. Again, imagine the betta in the wild. They are not alone, nor are their numbers small from killing each other off. My daughter recently reminded me that for years she had 2 males and 2 females in a tall 15 gallon that had lots of love plants. I don't recommend multiples in a tank if you want to increase the odds of their breeding, but yes, you can put multiples together in larger tanks and they will all claim some territory and then live fine together.

Nonya Busnezz Nonya Busnezz what kind of fish do you recommend I should get? I don't want to get a female because I don't want them to mate and have a bunch of fry. I wanna be the very best, cause no one ever was
I wanna be the very best, cause no one ever was - 7 years ago
A few of the pet stores where I live do keep the females in cups. Most of them don't, which is why I usually think that they just do it cause the males fight. I think the main reason why pet stores do it is because they think bettas don't think a lot of room since they are so small and live such short lives. Also because they are noramally the best seller because they are easy to care for and are small. I hate how people think they don't need a lot of room because they're small. Almost all the betta care guides I've seen say you have to put them in 0.5 gallon tanks. At the least they need about 2 or 2.5 gallons. I don't even know why that stupid myth started. I mean they are small but they are usually pretty active and they need a lot of room to swim around. For some reason mine isn't that active and usually just stays near the filter all the time. He doesn't even follow my finger around like most other ones do. I hope he's not scared of me cause sometimes I'll just go up to the tank and he'll run. Trust me I do take good care of him. He's in a well filtered decorated 2.5 gallon with lights and the tanks gets a water change one every week. I've had him for about 2 months now and think he should be well adjusted. Does anyone else have that problem?
MintChocolate
MintChocolate - 7 years ago
Person On Youtube And they sell colorful females in small cups too. Nowadays they are putting more emphasis on breeding the females to be just as pretty as the males, albeit with much shorter fins
MintChocolate
MintChocolate - 7 years ago
Person On Youtube I know that in the wild. I was referring to their reputation as being "fighting fish" used for sport. They have been bred for fighting but that isn't what the majority of the bettas available in pet stores are bred for. I'm aware that the natural behavior of the species is only aggressive for mating and territory
I wanna be the very best, cause no one ever was
I wanna be the very best, cause no one ever was - 7 years ago
Nonya Busnezz I think that most male bettas will fight no matter what. It doesn't really matter the tank size.
Nonya Busnezz
Nonya Busnezz - 7 years ago
Person On Youtube. simple...because betas will fight with too little room. Most other fish will not as easily fight. So again, rather than have a 20 gallon tank for 4 bettas, they can put 4 in 4 tiny cups.
I wanna be the very best, cause no one ever was
I wanna be the very best, cause no one ever was - 7 years ago
Nonya Busnezz Then why don't they do that with the other fish?
I wanna be the very best, cause no one ever was
I wanna be the very best, cause no one ever was - 7 years ago
MintChocolate Actually male bettas will usually fight with other males in order to impress the females. They aren't bred for their aggressive behavior but are for their colors. And since males are usually the most colorful, that's why they are usually sold more often than the females. And why you seem them in the smaller cups

MintChocolate
MintChocolate - 7 years ago
Person On Youtube I'm not buying it. I had a male betta in a community tank with corydoras and a pleco and he never acted aggressive at all. You just have to make sure that the temperament of the individual betta is compatible for life in a community tank. Bettas are not bred exclusively for aggression anymore by the majority of people. Most breeders now breed bettas for color and fin size / shape, not aggression. Hence you don't have generations and generations of aggressive betta giving birth to even more aggressive betta so the occurrence of a docile temperament is way more likely

Oh no, now I feel bad :( I bought one of my bettas from PSP & the other from Petsmart. One is in a 5 gallon tank, the other in a 10 gallon tank. Both tanks have lots of live plants & are heated & filtered. I thought I was rescuing them from their life in a cup. I plan on getting more bettas in the future...where should I get them? ETA: PSP & Petsmart are the only pet/fish supply stores near me. Even then, Petsmart is in another town kind of far away.

I wanna be the very best, cause no one ever was - 7 years ago
I think the reason of why they have the bettas in cups is because the males will fight with the other fish. I don't fully support doing this, but it is what they have to do. A few really good store actually have a rack like setup of 0.5-1 gallon tanks and each male betta gets its own tank. And then the females are put together since they don't often fight.

I see it everyday. We're a very very very very small minority. The average person does not watch youtube videos about fish keeping, only the few of us who are into the hobby, again which is a very small minority. I see it everyday, the practice will never end, unfortunately, so Aquapros is giving good advice when he tells people to go rescue a betta. It's your money, spend it how you want, but you are vastly outnumbered by people who cannot be bothered to care.

Which is why I said us consumers should try to influence corporate mandates with the only way we have; voting with our wallet. Stop buying, and they'll stop selling. Having Youtubers speaking out against these practices is one way to increase public awareness about the animal abuse that's going on in corporate pet stores (and yes, it is animal abuse).
Saying 'The practice will never end, so why even resist it' is not helping one bit.
Adrian Vendura

I Am Darb
I Am Darb - 7 years ago
Most of us would if we could, but at stores like Petco, PSP, PetSmart it's just not feasible. Corporate mandates a set a certain way. All we can do is hope that the consumer heeds our advice on what is or isn't proper for a betta. Again though, the practice will never end, far too many people are uneducated and unwilling to abstain from purchasing bettas from corporate petstores.

if you sell them from cups, people will think that a cup is fine, since it looks so 'cute' on the salon table. Display and sell them in a proper aquarium, and people will be inclined to follow the right example.
it will also keep the fish happy and healthy in the store.
I Am Darb
I Am Darb - 7 years ago
I manage a pet store and sadly this isn't true... Too many people are uneducated on the proper care a Betta needs, and when informing them, they're usually unwilling to take the extra mile when a gallon bowl is 4.98. It's sad, but you'd literally have to get these people to stop buying Bettas which is realistically impossible. Think about abstaining from meat, you may think you're making a change, but the overwhelming majority of people eat and are raised eating meat. A few people compared to most isn't going to make a difference.

Not necessarily true. Male and Females can go in community tanks depending on the size of the tank and the type of community fish. If you stick to bland fish and have at least 10gallons you can easily introduce a Betta. There are plenty of videos on Youtube, and I'm speaking from experience as I have male bettas in community tanks without any issues. They just need enough space to have their own territories.

I have one in a 10 gallon and he doesn’t go near the center of the tank at all. He swims right up near the glass back and forth. So yeah I’d say it’s overkill unless you’ll be planning to get other fish which I hope you do. I suggest mystery snails or tetras.

I agree that it depends on the personality of the fish. But if you where planing on doing it you can make a ledge using either glass or acrylic (depending on what your tank is) and silicone it to the side with the least flow.

I'm not Jeff clearly, but I'd say it depends on your betta. As he said, they have personalities and all of them are different. I currently have one in a 25 gallon and he swims all over the place. Just make sure he can easily rest near the top with some floating plants or tall ornaments. If you put one in and they spend all their time hiding, it might be a good idea to downsize.

India almond leaf, aquarium salt dosed 1 tablespoon per every 5 gallons of water (bettas like brackish water so this is how the salt content of their water should be anyway) and methylene blue are what he should be using for a betta.

Is it not necessary to have a water heater and filter in a tank this small? Or for a beta in general?

Rachael Purgerson It is imperative that you have one. If you aren't to buy a heater, don't buy a Betta

First Amendment Deal with it With correct water changes you absolutely don't need a filter as you can maintain pristine water parameters if you just put the work in.

No, it really is a necessity to have a filter, the heater will depend on the temperature of the area it is in.

Brianna Harter I've been breeding for years and you absolutely do not need a filter for smaller tanks such as 1 gallon juvenile growout jars as long as you keep frequent water changes. My jars never register any ammonia, nitrites or nitrates.

you need a filter especially in a smaller tank cause that is where most of the beneficial bacteria live.without a beneficial bacteria power house/filter the tank will quickly become toxic cause the ammonia won't be processed fast enough into nitrates which can lead to ammonia burn.no amount of water changes you do will help if the ammonia isn't being processed.

in a bigger tank you could get away with not having a filter cause there's more surface area for the bacteria and water to dilute the waste.

In tropical climates bettas won't need a heater but I've also realized i never needed one though I'm in Canada. I think that the water will always be room temperature which is like 28 degrees celcius in my house. Though i always have an extra heater just in case

Rachael Purgerson a heater is necessary. with proper water changes you can not have a filter, but it's not smart.
