Kayak Fishing: Offshore Trip Gone Wrong - Part 3

This was my first shark from the kayak, and after spending 5 minutes trying to remove the hook with pliers and being unable to get it out, I cut the line so that I didn't keep the fish out of the water any longer. I felt that if I kept trying, the shark would suffocate and die. Luckily they were NOT stainless steel hooks and it has certainly rusted out by now. Since this trip, I now pinch down the barbs on my hooks and have removed the hook from about 15 sharks since this trip. It is all a learning experience and I learned a lot from the mistakes I made on this trip. Offshore Trip Gone Wrong: Part 3 I traveled from Corpus Christi up to Galveston, TX in search of my next target: landing a big shark from the kayak. Well, before long I had my first run and I could tell this was the kind of fish I was looking for. I landed my first shark, a nice 6 foot blacktip, but I would soon learn that if you lose your focus for just one second, the ocean will take advantage. My whole world got turned upside down in a heartbeat... literally. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Follow Me on Social! ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Facebook → http://bit.ly/RF_FBook Instagram → http://bit.ly/RF_IG Twitter → http://bit.ly/RF_Tweet Google+ → http://bit.ly/RF_G-Plus ▬▬▬▬▬▬ Follow YakFish TV on Social! ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Facebook → http://bit.ly/YFTV_FB Instagram→ http://bit.ly/YFTV_IG Twitter → http://bit.ly/YFTV_Tweet Website → http://www.yakfish.tv ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ My Favorite Brands ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ http://www.nrs.com http://www.accentpaddles.com http://www.railblaza.com http://www.fishbrain.com http://www.yak-gear.com ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Shop the Gear I Use! ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Main Camera → http://bit.ly/RJF_DSLR Action Cameras → http://bit.ly/RJF_GoPro5 Editing Software → http://bit.ly/RJF_Editing Editing Computer → http://bit.ly/RJF_PC Drone → http://bit.ly/RJF_Drone Audio Recorder → http://bit.ly/RJF_Audio Paddle → http://bit.ly/RJF_Paddle Life Jacket → http://bit.ly/RJF_Chinook Knife → http://bit.ly/RJF_Co-Pilot Gear Crate → http://bit.ly/RJF_Ambush Camera Boom → http://bit.ly/RJF_Boom Rod Holder → http://bit.ly/RJF_RodHolder Visibility Kit → http://bit.ly/RJF_Visibility Rod Leashes → http://bit.ly/RJF_Leashes Fish Finder Battery → http://bit.ly/RJF_Nocqua VHF Radio → http://bit.ly/RJF_VHF

I did read the description and saw you have revised your tactics to ensure this doesn't happen in the future, but Murphy's law is always in play so you never know when tonic immobility may just come in handy. ✌

Top has sprung a leak
Its ok to eat fish
Cuz they dont have any feelings
Something in the way

I do t think you did. If ypu had cutters you could have cut the barbed hook. Yoi pulled it up and sliced the line letting the shark go. You went up and bye bye. I read. But what i saw was not what i read. Look below. He said the same thing now he agrees with me it seems. Own ur fun. You were scared treated it lile a shark not lile a dog or cat. Who can fault you for being scared. But thats you. Not me and the rest of the dive team i dive with.
Is what it is but ive cut hooks out of fish. He had a shot at snipping the barb off is all. Would you leave a salmon with a hook. There are rules with hooks an salmon. We should alway leave the fish as it was. There is trying and saying i tried is all. I saw look at this nd cut the line. He could have done more from what he showed.

2.) stainless steal hooks dissolve in water in less than 3 days.
I didnt realize it was from 2013
everyone who is typing angry comments, how many factory farmed animals do you eat each week? how much stolen calf milk do you drink from the mother cow? the meat and dairy you buy, is much crueler than a hook dissolving out of a happy wild and free animals mouth. how many of you have visited zoos that had none captive bred animals? how many of you funded sea world and mystic and Atlantis aquariums with your money?
this video is one of the most memorable because it wasn't fake or set up, this is as real as it gets. he could have edited out the hook part but he didnt. cause he didnt do anything wrong.
(my caps lock is not working lol)
you should have took out tbe hook from that little shark ...
.but anyways I'm off my soap box but please don't speak bad if some one when you don't know what you are talking about
I hope the haters dont keep you from posting more vids.
Your an asshole for this!!!!!
hook it
lets go
I would be terrified of Falling in the water
Next time when you have a NON Stainless Steel Nail on your feet, the Doctor will be saif "its Ok, no problem, it will be dissapered because Rust"... (Before that Nail dissapeared, you will die because Infection).
BTW, you fallou into water maybe because Karma.
Thats why a lot of places make you have barbless hooks... sure you can lose a fish easier when you're fighting her but when its time to pull the hook out you do minimum damage. Theres also the added bonus that if youre alone, like this guy was, and you hook yourself it'll come out easy too.
Just to be clear i'm not putting my hand in a sharks mouth..
Ur a dope. Stick to the oil rigs, jack ass.
Inflicting pain and suffering for sport.
Maybe if you ate more veggies youd have the strength to pull it out.
...we can never find toe socks that fit right.
I love this
you can put your hand in the shark's mouth to pull the fucking hook out
that is ignorant....might as well kill it
read all the messages bitch to see this discussion was already worked out
..............
.....
...
One period would suffice...
thats not what your mom said when i put my hook in her mouth...
stay out of the conversation....obviously, you did not read my post correctly....
2. Hooks rust out very quickly when completely submerged in saltwater. That hook will last a week or two tops.
3. Fuck off
This type should also sting a hook through the face.
> But is too much of a dipshitty moron to know how to insult properly.
> 2nd dont put your real name up as your youtube name than.
> 3rd Stop being a dipshit.
But in ur situation, with a shark right next to you I wouldnt get that thought either.
Good work robert, keep up the good work.
Take care ok.
From "fucking moron" to "pal" and compliments. lul
Ah man, why not!
Its like a slight pinch when they bite, nothing to worry about, its just a shark.
The blow should be aimed just above the eyes to impact on the brain. The effectiveness of the stun should be checked and another blow applied if the fish is not unconscious.
After stunning the fish should be bled out by cutting the gill rakers or, with larger fish, a main artery.
With the very small fish breaking the neck is good way to kill. Just put your thumb or other finger to the mouth of the fish and quickly make a move upwards.
All this is important because fish also feel pain and suffer. Pain and suffer of the feeling animals must be minimized.
When the fish is in pain and suffering, the fish also produce stress hormone. Stress hormone makes the meat of the fish taste worst and stress hormone also reduce keeping quality.
Tight lines!
Have some respect towards sea life is beautiful and is meant to enjoy it but just doing the right things.
"John Foster, Recreational Fisheries Coordinator for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, studied striped bass at Chesapeake Bay. His researchers held throat-hooked stripers between 16- and 28-inches long for observation in half-strength seawater so that hooks had ample opportunity to rust away. Size 1/0 and 2/0 stainless steel, bronzed, nickel, tin and tin-cadmium hooks were hooked in the top of each fish's esophagus, with an 18-inch length of line connected to the hook.
After four months, 78 percent of the hooks were still imbedded. Cadmium coated hooks poisoned 20 percent of the fish, and production of these hooks has been stopped. Bronzed hooks were less likely (70%) to be retained than tin-cadmium (80%), nickel (83%), or stainless steel (100%) hooks.
In a second test, the line was clipped at the eye of the hook, as advised by most existing C&R guides. One-hundred percent of the stainless hooks were again retained, while 56 percent of tin, 76 percent of bronze, 84 percent of tin-cadmium, and 88 percent of nickel hooks remained. Fish mortality was greater when all line was trimmed. Foster theorized that the lengths of line hanging from a fish's mouth kept the hook-shank flat against the side of the esophagus and allowed food to pass. Without the line, food could move the hook and close the throat.
Hooks rusted slowly in stages, and the bend and barb became smaller very gradually. Stripers formed scar tissue around imbedded hook points, a typical reaction of body tissue to foreign matter. Foster noted, however, that once the tough scar tissue formed, hooks became more, not less, difficult to remove. Months after fish were hooked, infections sometimes developed around points, causing some deaths.
Based on his research, Foster recommended anglers carefully remove even deeply imbedded hooks. If the hook can not be removed, then it seems better to leave about 18 inches of line attached. Perhaps, someday, these findings will reach C&R anglers, the biologists who are researching C&R and publish C&R guidelines, and TV anglers who teach by their example. "
Effect of fish hooks remaining in fish on their mortality

In the case of fishing in Lower Saxony, it is prohibited to catch undersized or harmed fish of defined species. If fish caught for capture are caught live, the fisherman shall immediately reinstate them; if they are killed during fishing or if they are no longer viable, they shall immediately be destroyed (Section 5, paragraph 1, BiFischO).
For the fisherman, the question is when an undersized or protected fish is considered viable after catch and therefore has to be put back into the water. While an immediate hakmortality can easily be detected by the fisherman, serious injuries and their consequences for the future survival of the fish, in particular with deep - hooked fish, are not apparent the fish immediately. This recommendation is based on the assumption that a considerable proportion of deeply chopped fish survive the process of catching and resetting, even though the catch remains in the fish. An alternative view, on the other hand, is based on the assumption that deeply chopped fish are mainly devastated, which is why the fish should be killed and disposed of in this case.
It is comparatively well documented in the scientific literature to determine whether and to what extent deeply chopped fish, in which the hook remains in the body, will survive or cause further damage. It is generally assumed that flat-hooked fish which are easy to release from the hook are most likely to survive after the resetting and do not carry any permanent damage. In the case of the catch of flattened / undersized fish, the fisherman should immediately return the fish to the water. A large number of scientific studies confirm that fish are largely unaffected by this process and are only able to cope with i.d.R. (for example, Muoneke and Childress 1994, Bartholomew and Bohnsack 2005, Klefoth et al., 2011).
If an fisherman finds that a protected fish is deeply hooked and wants to reset it, he has two possible options: 1) to free the fish from the hook with the help of a pair of pliers or a hook - and - loop fastener; the hook in the fish. The subsequent viability of the fish is thereby essentially determined by the degree of the injury caused by the hook itself or by possible consequential injuries caused by the release of the hook.
In an experiment with sunfish, Fobert et al. (2009) the mortality probability and the degree of injuries of deep - hooked fish to which the
Hook was removed again, or the cord was cut off just before the hook. They assessed the severity of the injuries among others. by the occurrence of bleeding, since bleeding is associated with increased mortality (Arlinghaus et al., 2008a). The results of the study clearly indicate that both low-term and long-term mortality (by 10%) can be expected if the cord is cut off as short as possible before the hook in the case of deep-hooked fish (Table 1). Significantly higher mortality is to be expected, however, if attempts are made to remove the deep-seated hooks from the fish (Table 1). The resulting consequential injuries significantly increased mortality.
Table 1: Summary of short-term and long-term mortality and bleeding of fish, which were deeply hooked, after different handling of the situation (leader cut off, hook with a pliers removed). Data were collected from sunfish (Lepomismacrochirus). According to Fobert et al. In 2009.
For fishing fishing, the experiment of Fobert et al. (2009), two conclusions can be drawn:
1) Scarred and / or undersized fish with deep-seated hook survive the majority of the catch and rescue process.
2) The survival probability is greatly increased when the cord is cut off just before the hook and the hook remains in the body of the fish. In this case, a long-term survival probability of around 90% is to be expected.
The primary reason for the relatively high probability of survival of fish with the remaining hook in the body is the lack of consequential injuries which may occur when loosening the low-lying hooks. The catch remaining in the fish, on the other hand, is usually excreted, spat out or decomposed within a few days to a few months after the catch (eg Schisler and Bergersen 1996, Tsuboi et al., 2006, Dubois and Pleski 2007, Arlinghaus et al. 2008b, Fobert et al., 2009). Based on these experiences, the angler should pay attention to prevent a deep catch of the fish, eg by a timely stop. If a fish is nevertheless deeply hooked and must be reset according to §5 paragraph 1 BiFischO, the cord should be cut off just before the hook. Mechanical removal of the hook would only reduce the survival probability of the fish. Since about 9 out of 10 fish survive this, a general disposal of deep-caught and protected fish is not compatible with the good professional practice in the inland fishing industry (Lewin et al., 2010), nor with the aims and obligations of the fisherman even rare and all-season savage species would be unnecessarily killed.
I digress. Thank you for posting this video as kayak fishing is a growing interest of mine and I had no idea there were golden rules. From you, I've learned 6 today. Keep on keepin' on brother, and stay safe always.
It connects us to the divine through our sense of kinship or whakapapa to all living things.
From this arises a sense of responsibility or kaitiakitanga to maintain balance and health – wairua – in everything we do. It is a sense of responsibility I hope is spread through New Zealand’s fishing industry.

And as I said you keep right on proving you are a wannabe soldier. He with the biggest mouth usually has the least of value to say. You prove that every time you post something.
I know too many combat vets from WWII to the middle east and not one talks like you.
I know a lot of people who served in the military during active combat and not one talks like you. The ones who do never saw actual combat, they were support positions on base where they were safe.
To some it up, you are just another mouthy asshole trying to make people think you are tough only because you are not face to face where they can see you for the coward you really are.
Righting a kayak in choppy water and getting back in can be difficult and certainly exhausting. Compound it with chumming the water with his bait when he flipped and being alone creates a very real and justified state of fear, concern and panic. All of which taught him some valuable lessons.
Let's hope that you don't someday find yourself in a similar position.
I found your channel while researching Hobies. I saw your tour of the Hobie facility and have watched quite a few of your vids since. I wanted to start at the beginning and here I am.
Is it same to assume you attended Texas A&M? If so...I find it funny that you always give the "Horns Up" every time you sign out (or used to in older vids).
Anyways....
Thanks for posting. Keep em coming. \\m//
I see no difference in this and the Assholes that big game hunt elephants and lions. Anything to make you feel like your dick is bigger I guess.
Is argriculture not a source of income for society is that what you are trying to say with your bubble philosophy....???
You clearly are some city boy that does not even live in Africa or understand it. How about you stay in your lane you naive baby
Again, simply because people are cutting off sharks fins, doesn't absolve sport fishing. That's like saying, We don't need to worry about the environment or care about polluting our waterways. In India, they shit right in the rivers, they throw their garbage in it, wash their clothes in it, their way worse than us. If you're so worried about the environment go talk to them. That's your logic! It's ridiculous.
Lastly, the fact that you would even compare scientists tagging sharks to STUDY THEM as opposed to doing it for FUN! I just...I can't...
The bluegill in my nearby pond can be easily reproduced in farms. They have a short life span and it doesn't take much space to stock entire lakes. If they ever run short, they can easily be replaced. Sharks not so much.
Plus, just because other countries and people do fucked up things to animals, isn't an excuse. When you say Asians are worse than shark fishing, you're still saying that shark fishing is bad, just not AS bad by comparison. So, I believe your arguments are shit!
He's not playing at anything, in the ocean there is no play what the fuck are you on about bubble child
If only the man himself were around to give you an ozzy uppercut..... he'd think you're scum of the Earth!
We all do!
Suspension bridges were built for people like you... so do the decent thing!... & leave the keys in the ignition so someone can move your car afterwards.
Dick!
As soon as I realized you were purposely catching a shark I turned that shit OFF!
Maybe on your next video you can title the thumbnail "Kayaking gone wrong!" While your "sport fishing" for dolphins.
It is common sense
