3 Ways to trip your Boat Anchor | TAFishing

This is another way Graeme uses to trip his anchor on his 17ft boat. He shows you three different ways on how to trip your anchor when boat fishing. Getting the right anchor for your boat is paramount, but what many people don't think about is the ability to be able to release the anchor when it is caught in the bottom or in snags. Graeme has used three different methods in the past and each method has its own advantages, this is just what has worked for him. Good video. Nervous about the anchor breaking loose though. Is it common practice to simply tie a second line for retrieving? Maybe with a buoy?

Ive seen this used on a 25ft boat but using 2 thick cable ties. Held well in 3-4m swells. Even seen it get stuck and how he got it out, with the thick cable ties it does take a bit of force to snap em. Carry spares so you can keep fishing.

Better use hemp for that. Nylon and plastics become fishfood and we all know how that ends.

The problem with such a setup is that if you anchor in an area where the current and/or wind shifts dramatically then the seizing (string, cable-ties, wire, et cetera) will let loose, allowing your anchor to pop out of the bottom and NOT reset. A better method is to tie another line (a bit longer than the water's depth) with a float on it to the head of the anchor. Then, if your anchor gets fouled by rocks (or whatever) you can pull the anchor out by that secondary line.

how do you set the float to the anchor line?

Better with only rope like in first case dude.......

That's just a complete load of bollocks. The minute you get a wind shift or direction change that puts the anchor into not being an anchor mode. A tripping line is the only safe way to go.

Yes, this method is, as he says, for fishing from a boat. It's not for use when anchoring out for the night, for use on a large yacht, etc.

I have a 17ft sailboat and about to take her out and thought what if I just wanted to drop anchor and do some fishing on the lake. Didn't have a anchor and bought one yesterday and was wondering about that hole at the bottom. I'm going to give this a try on mine.

where can I buy the stainless shackle?

Unless you're using a stainless steel anchor and stainless steel chain, use a galvanized steel shackle. It's stronger and won't cause electrolysis.

And you SHOULD be nervous when using the way presented here.

Haha....... yeah,..... allmost,  u tommy cooper........ !
In a tide/windshift the strain on the cable ties will give since the chain will pull
from a different angle. And then, while having your fish,n,chips ashore..................
Don,t try this at home folks.

My cable ties only snap when I steam them out on the Alderney .Maybe you have ties that are too small. If I kept breaking out I wouldn't be using them would I .

Its all fun and games untill you break your cordage in a storm and pull anchor.
These methods are fine for day anchoring or small boats.
I couldn't sleep easy knowing that rig is at then end of my chain at night.

This fellow is fishing. Building in "instant failure" is obviously madness for any serious anchoring.
uguysrnuts
uguysrnuts - 7 years ago
A competent sailor will set the anchor and tackle for the conditions expected. It's not a 'set it and forget it' situation. Not being able to retrieve ones anchor because it's fouled can be just as dangerous as one that drags.

First let me say thank you for the time and effort you put into the video. Second i know NOTHING about sailing. With that in mind,.... I love this idea but my concern is if the waves start kicking up and it snaps the zip tie. Is that possible? If so... now at the worst possible time, when you want the most bite from your anchor, your pulling from the worst spot on the anchor. Again, I'm looking to learn, not criticizing your method. Would the "trip line" method be better on the rare rough water conditions?
SeikiBrian
SeikiBrian - 6 years ago
Yes, a trip line (or an Anchor Rescue) is better for anything other than short-term anchoring while fishing and such.

Funny, I 've sailed for 40 years and never lost an anchor, what are you doing?
For a 50ft narrowboat I will be getting a 11.4Kg Mantus, 5m DIN766 10mm chain, and an 11mm Green Pin Certified bow Shackle, 30m of 16mm Anchorplait.
it costs about £500, I won't be losing it!!!
