We're here today in Liberty Harbor to talk about boating. Following some basic sailing principles when going out on the water just for an afternoon can make a day on the water much more enjoyable. First off, know your weather. If the radar shows a storm coming, it's not the day to go out. Cancel your voyage is the safest thing you can do. Once you get to the boat, a good practice is to check the weather again. Only take a boat out that is properly equipped with everything sorted. When on the boat, make sure that everything is in proper working order. If you have an engine malfunction or a problem with any other equipment while you're out there, it can turn a fun day into a stressful day. Make sure that you have enough safety equipment for everyone aboard. Make sure you have enough life jackets. If you have anyone on board that doesn't know how to swim, make sure they're wearing a life jacket. Even a large cruiser like this on just a calm afternoon. On a gasoline fuel boat, make sure that you have the flame arrester on the engine and make sure they you have a blower to blow any fumes out of the boat before you start it. It's not just common sense, that's the law. Make sure that everyone on the boat knows what they're supposed to be doing. You're responsible for everyone on your boat. If you run into inclement weather while you're out there or any other type of problem, make sure to have everyone put on their life jackets. Knowing all these things when you're going out in the water makes boating not only fun but safe.
