Beginner's guide to driving a small boat

In this video I go through the basics of driving an outboard-powered runabout boat (or "tinnie" as we call them locally.) This includes judging your speed, leaving and approaching a pontoon, manoeuvring in a confined space, navigating in a channel and driving between moorings. We also explore techniques such as using a deck line to spring on or off a pontoon when weather gets bad. This is a great way to avoid running into trouble when the wind picks up as it does by the end of this video. If you are new to boating and looking for a few pointers before heading out on the water this video is a good place to start, but even if you are more experienced you might still learn something from this one. Learning to handle a boat can be a lot of fun, and there is always something new to discover so be sure to post your own tips in the comments as well! Whats the maximum safe wave height for a small tinnie? Can't you get the wave height from the BOM's website? What is the maximum wave height that it is safe to take the Tinnie out into?
Dangar Marine
Dangar Marine - 6 years ago
Hi Sam. It's hard to say exactly because a steep half metre wave will do a boat much more harm than a 2 metre rolling swell. Having said that, here are some government guidelines that might help http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/maritime/safety-rules/before-boating/wave-heights.html

Great discussion on speed concerns. Here in the States, No-Wake zones require the minimum speed that allows steerage. The absolute speed will vary by boat and conditions, especially current and wind. Some states and particular locations will have absolute speed limits, but maintaining control should always overrule nominal limits.
Dangar Marine
Dangar Marine - 6 years ago
Yes, speed and wash (wake) seem to be something not well understood by most new boaters (and plenty of experienced boaters with 1000HP 50 foot motor cruisers!). Most small boats seem to make the most wash at about 8-9 knots, just before they start planing.

I'm not sure what they call it in the US, but we mostly say sailing for sail boats and driving of skippering for power boats.

They are divided into two regions (A & B) around the world:
Region A comprises nations in Europe, Australia, New Zealand, parts of Africa and most of Asia other than the Philippines, Japan and Korea.Region B comprises nations in North America, Central America and South America, Philippines, Japan and Korea.

Mostly it is about trimming right down for slow speed manoeuvring (particularly for going in reverse) and then trimming up as you accelerate to keep the boat sitting at the right attitude once you are up on the plane. I'll do a video on it soon.

Its a Yamaha setup so it just works.. I am having a problem with air being sucked in ( cavitation plate or ventalation) issues lately.. could be because I am still learning but I think I am pretty good at recognizing a problem.. this issue only happens in hard turns with the trim up a bit and\or when going wot with to much trim... But I cant seem to find the sweet spot. calvatation plate is 3/4 inches below keel keel so I am a little lost as to why it happening. But hey I keep learning... maybe different prop.. Ill keep watch and researching until i figure it out.. keeps me busy..

Hi Mate, I really like your videos and have learned a lot from them. I am a new to me (used) power boat owner. It is a Rinker open bow V-hull 15ft with a 75hp Chrysler outboard. I would like to perform some basic spring maintenance on this 1984 outboard. I do not think the impeller has been replaced in a few years because the prior owner did not know it had one so I think I will start there. Most Youtube channels just show removing the lower unit by unbolting the 4 bolts and sliding out the long drive shaft rod, then uncovering the impeller housing and replacing the rubber impeller and adding some new gaskets. I borrowed a library book about Chrysler outboards and there are a few water pump removal instructions I do not understand: ????Remove drive shaft seal from pump body by driving same out from inside pump body. Remove water pump back plate and gasket. Press drive shaft seal (garter spring on major sealing lip positioned out) in seal bore of pump body using seal installer (Special Tool T3012)???? Any help on this would be great because I have no idea what they are talking about. The motor seems to run great with the ear muffs on but I have not had it in the water as yet. Any other suggestions for routine maintenance would also be great. My list includes: 1 top off gear grease, 2 check and replace spark plugs, 3 add Sea Foam to fresh gas to clean carb. I had a marine mechanic check the outboard for compression and he felt it was fine with 130 in each cylinder. He also was skeptical about the motor not having a power trim tab - it is either all up or all down. Thanks for all your great Youtube posts. Regards, Bob

Hi, thanks for the prompt reply. I guess I will find out more about it when I remove the lower unit. Thanks for the link to the routine maintenance. Regards, Bob
Dangar Marine
Dangar Marine - 7 years ago
Hi Bob, I'm not familiar with that outboard at all, but the drive shaft seals are under the water pump so you shouldn't need to worry about that at all unless you are getting water in your gearbox oil. It does read as though it is all integrated into the pump body which is strange but I'd have to see it. Here is a video on other routine maintenance work https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tih4o9-VJ2g

Thanks for the video. I have a question: how do you know when exactly are you on plane (if you're trying to find the lowest planing speed for example)? Did you start planing at the 14:25, 14:26 minute mark, when the wash moved away from the outboard/prop or after that? Thanks.
Dangar Marine
Dangar Marine - 7 years ago
Hi mate, good question. The boat is technically on the full plane when the minimum amount of the hull is in the water so the boat will start to rise up out of the water as you accelerate and will go a bit nose up. At this point you will be putting out about the most wash the hull can and isn't a great way to travel. As you get further up on the plan the hull will level out (the nose will drop), you will notice the speed pick up for the same throttle position and the wash will reduce. This is when the boat is planing.

I have a 25 foot GRP cruiser, outboard and I have been on the water less than a year. I have a motto of my own. Never rush, but when the occasion calls, act fast and decisively. In other words, it's better to save time by tying knots very quickly, or having your lines at hand ready, than to try to save time by hopping around on the gunwales. But when I fuck, I have a good idea of what I will end up doing, and I also have a plan B ready, and I watch the window for plan B. At some point you must commit to plan A.
Also you don't mention in your video, the importance of having the engine in neutral before you leap around on the dock with lines. I mean, while I really like the way you use the engine to hold the boat on the dock, some viewers might think this is a way to cast off... Which could leave you on the dock watching your boat sail away!!
Still, I really appreciate your videos and especially how to use the gears and steering to dock. Thanks!
Dangar Marine
Dangar Marine - 7 years ago
It is very true that being prepared with lines etc before you arrive at a dock is definitely the way to go. Having the boat running in neutral is also very important, the last thing you want is your boat sailing off with out you! :)

Thank you for the video and for taking the time to make it, but I think you should have started with the basics as when you are teaching someone to drive a car. I know it would have taken much longer. I do not know if you already have a video mentioning what I am about to point out. I have been around boats since I was 6 and now I am 25. Forgive me if I say some names wrong, since I am not used to boating terms in English.

For example: this is the key you press to move the motor up and down, putting the roof up and down for speed purposes and under certain conditions might be helpful for it not to get destroyed if your roof is foldable, throwing an anchor, this is how you put the boat's lever to put the boat in neutral or to back up (and actually show it with the camera and your hand), how to drive with waves (I know there were not big waves on the video, but maybe just going over it), how to use boat stabilizers on a bigger boat, how to tie a basic knot, and also safety tips when you are a new driver such as life vests, especially when you are driving alone.

Maybe this could be some ideas for another beginner's video. Thank you for your time and dedication and for trying to help others in their boating journey.
Dangar Marine
Dangar Marine - 7 years ago
Yes, in hindsight there could be an "absolute beginners" video that goes before this video. I wouldn't say it was been trouble free, but it still runs. The owners have only recently sold it to get around some hard starting problems by going to an EFI engine. It had the usual things replaced with age - starter motor, a leaking oil reservoir, carb kit, but the core engine was still running fine.

hi danger
just one point on wash i noticed you come off the throttle rather quickly on your wash segment. it didnt effect that boat olus it was pretty calm. many boats are prone to copping a wave over the stern if you come off tge stick to fast. its a good habit to take not of the size of wash following and give it a gentle stab as the wash approches the stern. let the wash ride under the boat then ease right off. ive watched half your vid and checking your teaching style out. doing pretty good:)

Dangar Marine - 7 years ago
Yes, fair point. It has been a while since I have driven a boat that small but they can get swapped by their own wash, particularly if they have low transoms and short shaft motors.

I don't have a lot of experience with inflatable boat as all the boats around here live in the water permanently and an inflatable wouldn't last. Zodiac is probably the most famous brand so I'd start by checking out their website.

Stu, I believe distance off for paddle craft and swimmers is 60m, not 30. As a paddle crafter myself, I would really appreciate planning boats staying well clear, or as you say dropping to a no-wash speed. The worst for us is 20m off at 8 knots, so I end up spilling my cocktail.
Dangar Marine

I believe you are right, it is double for paddle craft and swimmers.

Thanks for the great advice. I'm also new to boating and found it worrying to try to remember everything I need to do before, during and after going out (mine is a drive on/off boat). My wife suggested I make a list and so I made up a set of 3 double-sided small cards which are laminated and made into a very small pocket sized booklet (bound with durable tape). I only have to check one page of up to about 6 reminders at each stage and it saves me holding up other boaters at the ramp. Because it's in a doc format I can change it and also make it available for others to use and change to suit themselves but I don't know if this is a good idea nor how to share it (free).
Garry Hart
Garry Hart - 8 years ago
Thanks Dangar. Yes, they are for each stage and they flip over so just the card for the next stage is visible. I'll look into the Google Docs option. Thanks.

I finally got it setup through a youtube video with a link to the booklet.
Dangar Marine
Dangar Marine - 8 years ago
Hey Gary, sounds like a great idea, particularly if they are themed to each stage (preparing the boat, launching the boat etc). Personally I share things like that using Google Docs, but there are plenty of other options. I'm sure plenty of people would get value out of them. :)

Hello, can I ask some questions about boats? First, how much degrees does your steering wheel have? Second, did you have to switch gears, or just use the throttle to do it automatically?
ThePCJakub
ThePCJakub - 8 years ago
Thank you! Didn't know that before, you helped.
Dangar Marine
Dangar Marine - 8 years ago
Hi mate. I'm not sure how many turns the wheel is lock to lock, I'd say about four maybe? I'll check. On outboards like this, the throttle lever is also the gear selector. In the middle is neutral, then as soon as you push it forward it selects forward gear and then increases the revs the more you push. Boats only have forward, neutral and reverse, no 1st, 2nd, 3rd like a car. This is mostly because they don't have to go up hills like cars.

reggaerocket
reggaerocket - 7 years ago
Sorry Bob....in terms of LANGUAGE it is entirely correct to 'drive' a boat once it has an engine. Is it popular to use that terminology? Nope. But it is correct. lol. Its also correct to 'drive' a motorcycle...for the same exact historical reason. Of course, this doesn't automatically mean that "riding" a motorcycle or "piloting" a boat would be incorrect. lol
Ken in Cornwall
Ken in Cornwall - 7 years ago
this is obviously a video for the novice; of course you are NO novice because you find it necessary to correct someone who took the time to teach others. Pilot a boat??? HAHAHAHA.. no such animal... you pilot a plane smartass....
Do you pilot a boat?
If it's a sailing boat, you sail it. If you're the captain of a ship, you skipper it, and if you're the helmsman, you steer or helm it, but otherwise, there's no general term.

Hey great video! I was wondering if you had any advice on tackling wakes from other boats, I've heard multiple different answers including to power through them or some to slow down. Wondering what your opinion is.
Dangar Marine
Dangar Marine - 8 years ago
I personally change course to hit them at a shallow angle. If you imagine drawing a line directly across a wave (at 90 degrees to it), it is quite steep up and down and quite short. If you draw a line at a shallow angle it is a longer line with a shallow up and then a shallow down. You don't want it to be too shallow so you end up side on and get rolled too much, but a bit of an angle with soften the ride and also allow the sponson to catch the spray rather than having the bow dig in through the wave. Accelerating a bit at the last moment can help lift the bow a bit, but I certainly wouldn't hit wash at speed, I'd always slow down in advance, even if you do accelerate at the last moment.

Dangar Marine
Dangar Marine - 8 years ago
Okay, so I really llike RHIB boats. I worked on them for quite a while found them really practical. The main idea with them is that when the boat is going at speed on the plane, only the fibreglass hull is in the water so there isn't much resistance. When you turn the outside pontoon stops the boat rolling over so they turn very tight and very flat. When you slow down the hull sinks into the water down onto the pontoons and the boat becomes very stable. You can sit on the edges without it tipping over. We used the boat to go around checking other boats, so it was also good to have those soft pontoons to come along side boats without needing fenders. They have a really large capacity for their size. Ours were rated at 11 people and they were only about 6-7 metres long. We had twin 75HP motors so they were really quick and they were also really hard to sink. The only real drawback is they aren't good to live in the water, they are best on a trailer or davit. Enjoy your classes!

Question? Just bought my first boat and im learning everytjing i can. 1996 sea ray 190 sport inboard/outboard. Took it out for the first time couple days ago. Was in water few hours and no problem. after the few hours I would throttle up with trim down then trim up as nessecarry. The boat started leaning/tilting to the left. The steering wheel was also going left when i straiten wheel out the boat would go off course and go right. i would turn it back in the direction of straight but the wheel and boat would go left.An uncomfortable lean left. weight in boat was right. I asked around and got no proper answers. Was told its made that way for my protection. If i were to fall off the boat is to go in circles instead of going straight? Any clue or idea?
David Lewis
David Lewis - 8 years ago
+Dangar Marine Ok thank you for your time. I guess i will do more research and figure it out. The boat was empty besides myself, life jacket, and ore. If it is the torque how would one fix or adjust this so boat straightens out?
Dangar Marine
Dangar Marine - 8 years ago
No, if you tried ever direction and it was the same it would have been caused by prop torque or weight distribution.
David Lewis
David Lewis - 8 years ago
+Dangar Marine ok thank you. Could the windy conditions and the water being choppy have effect on it leaning to the left. I actually went in every direction to see if It would fix it self. no matter whst direction i went it still leaned left on throttle up about 30 to 40 mph. trim was all the way down I teimmed up it didnt matter. But it was windy and water was choppy
Dangar Marine
Dangar Marine - 8 years ago
Sounds like you will need to look into weight distribution and perhaps increasing the the steering tension then.
David Lewis
David Lewis - 8 years ago
+Dangar Marine It does have a flat one now. its there and level with the space its in. no "fin" trim tab just a plain anode
Dangar Marine
Dangar Marine - 8 years ago
Are the pictures you have seen for your exact model of motor? It is possible that your motor only allows for a flat anode.
David Lewis
David Lewis - 8 years ago
+Dangar Marine so i searched this trim tab anode and seen pictures of it. The size of it seems as though my prop will hit the trim tab. I went out to boat and looked. I spun my prop and where tge trim tab should be if one were there looks as if it would hit? Am I nuts. Is there a way to post a picture for you to see some how?
Dangar Marine
Dangar Marine - 8 years ago
I'd check for your model then, it sounds like the tab may have been eaten away. A new trim tab anode may go some way to solving your problem if it has one.
David Lewis
David Lewis - 8 years ago
+Dangar Marine thank you for responding also. Ice been trying to figure this out and have asked many people. No one can tell me
David Lewis
David Lewis - 8 years ago
Just a flat surface Anode.
David Lewis
David Lewis - 8 years ago
There is no trim tab aboce prop but a dull anode. Its like a greyish surface like crumble lol. Sorry im new. It take a screw to undo and remove. But the tab itself is not there.
Dangar Marine
Dangar Marine - 8 years ago
Most boats lean to the left because of the torque through the prop. Most prop turn clockwise which puts an equal and opposite turn counter clockwise through the hull pushing the left side down. This is the reason that the helm is put on the right hand side so the weight of the driver can help counter balance this force. Although it can make the boat go in circles if you fall overboard, it isn't by design. There is a trim tab anode just above the prop on most outboard that can be adjusted port and starboard to keep a boat running straight, but this will only come into effect above a certain speed as it acts like a small rudder. You could try adjusting this a small amount at a time. Also, if the wheel is taking force to hold it straight, most pivot tubes on outboards have a tension screw so you could tighten that up to reduce fatigue from constantly fighting the wheel.

+Janelle Farmilow No worries, glad you've got it going. My boat is an old 4.6m DeHavilland. I think it must have been made in the 70's. A good old work boat these days. How about you?

Great video mate, nice to see tips on the water in NSW.
I recon you and Maritime should pair up and make some more informative videos about boating..

Another great one mate. I agree with the comments, a series on "key things you need for obtaining a boat licence" would be amazing.

Will do... even NSW specific would be interesting. As long as it's made clear, I think most people would be ok. I know what you mean though.
Dangar Marine
Dangar Marine - 8 years ago
+Dayne Cowan I'd like to do that vid, I've just got to think of a way to make it quite generic rather than being specific to NSW regulations. Leave it with me!

16:20 I did not know that the lateral channel markers are reversed outside of the Americas (or reversed inside of the Americas, depending on your perspective) until today, I thought you misspoke until I did a little research... there should really be a world standard.
Dangar Marine
Dangar Marine - 9 years ago
+j6663000 Yes, it is odd. I should have mentioned that the Americas and Japan are opposite to the rest of the world. Must make it hard if you travel from one side of the world to another! Having said that I've just come back from the US and started driving on the right hand side of the road when I got home. Oops! :O

everything you really need to know.  Good Day
Dangar Marine
Dangar Marine - 9 years ago
There definitely are some good courses out there. Somebody recently asked about doing a video on getting your license, which I think is a good idea but unfortunately it is different from state to state let alone country to country! I think I'll try sticking to things that are the same all around world. :)
SeikiBrian
SeikiBrian - 9 years ago
+Semaj Rice Greetings, new boater. Just be aware that the color system of lights and buoys in Chicago will be opposite of what he describes in the video. Remember that for north, central, and south America the rule is "red, right, returning."

I highly recommend contacting the Coast Guard Auxiliary or US Power Squadron to look into a new boaters course.
