Boat Fishing Tips for Beginners - The Totally Awesome Fishing Show

Thousands of anglers spend a day afloat on a charter boat, fishing for many different species. But newcomers need to know the very basic tips and techniques to be in with the chance of getting a fish or two. Graeme Pullen takes you through a beginners guide to boat fishing, with tips that are easy to follow and have been proven fish catchers through the years. He takes his 17ft boat "Hi-Sea-Drifter" out to the Eastern Wight fishing grounds to put it through its paces. Filming entirely alone he decides to show baits as well - and that means the chance of catching something on The Totally Awesome Fishing cameras starts to increase. Booking a charter boat often gives the beginner or novice the best chance of catching. He covers best techniques, downtiding, updtiding and light tackle fishing for smaller fish, the options are there to choose whatever technique you want, but even after 40 years of sea fishing Graeme still gets huge success on the rigs. Yes,I was out two days again in it..can luckily still launch/retrieve single handed, but the tough, boulder strewn places like Boscastle are impossible on my own. Needs to be a concrete slip.

Hi Graham, First time out on a charter boat yesterday. Followed your advice and made some clements booms before the day, worked brilliant! I managed to get at the back of the boat and started bumping the lead as per your tips and caught my first smoothhound, first thornback and lots of decent whiting so a big thanks from me.....

I think there was a site called "Boats and outboards" might be worth looking at,but beware what you go for.I had many wasted trips looking at boats that appeared good in the pics but ended up being painted over junk .Might be better to see if an authorised dealer has anything secondhand.

Thanks for this info. I continue watching your videos. Now i'm retired i'm interested to buy a fishing boat myself. In holland there is not to much offer used fishing boats so i'm also looking around in the UK. As long as the UK is still in the EC no extra import duties or taxes are involved. Hahaha so i have to hurry. Do you maybe know UK websites specialized in used fishing boats? fished in the past with trawlers with a great number of anglers which is dramatic. Like to have my own fishing boat. Have several 8 ft boat and 12 ft beach rods. Had also already the idea that 7 ft rods are better for smaller boats. Thanks again.
TAFishing
TAFishing - 7 years ago
Average for UK boat fishing might be 7 foot rod and 20/30lb class. Depends on how deep you are fishing, strength of tides etc,but that rating would probably cover most species.

trim your tags properly
saskaleb
saskaleb - 8 years ago
+Jamie Evans surely it is but sir, did u see the results? Did it affect his fishing? So trimming the tags has nothing to do with presentation specially that the line should be invisible to fishes. Trimming helps only if you have risk of sea weed, which is not the case here. I am not against critisism or adding a remark or observation, but i think graeme caliber as fisherman is way beyond any level.

we use similar tactics for big flathead catfishing with the rigs except heavier with circle hooks.  The slide weight tactics work great for letting the fish take it against the clicker and leaning into the circle for a clean lip hook to not hurt the fish.  The hit on the first sip of tea is hilarious, the second I pick my coffee up the rod folds over every time. Sure fire way for a bite as you proved ! - but we dont boat fish so this video was really informative and as always best fishing show ever! thanks

+TAFishing Had a great day out with Charma Fishing, Cardiff. As it was the first time I must admit I was very apprehensive. My advice to anyone thinking of doing it is just go, don't think about it. You only need to take yourself and some food. Make sure you have appropriate clothing for the weather, preferably layered, and suntan lotion or moisturiser for your face. Everything else is supplied by the Charter Boat. Thanks for your video it did help.

Brilliant video, learnt huge amounts being a novice sea angler, I got a 3.3m inflatable boat with a 9.8hp motor and that will go 20mph and i can handle that on my own, had plenty of Sea bass with Feathers and topped off with 110gram wedge on the end, also plenty of Mackerel, but so far that is it, however your videos inspire me to do more. how far out were you and do you have certain spots you like or is it just random ares you fish, I tend to try and find rockeries on the bed or ship wrecks, I wouldn't mind fishing around some oil rigs or near wind farms, i bet they would be good fishing spots, whats your opinion on what i have said. Appreciate your knowledge of fishing it is very inspiring.

Glad you like the films and sound like a new member of our "Awesome Army !" I love going out in my 17-footer.Sure its all hassle with boating, but when you get some good fish it makes it worthwhile as its all your own work. And remember if you get fed up there is always a market for second-hand boats, so you can sell.Though I know several accounts of people selling up, then miss their boat and go buy another.

Only had the occasional squid as a by-catch when mackerel fishing. We don't really do it as recreational fishermen, but I believe the commercials still fish them at night down in Cornwall, generally in the autumn.

I'm new to sea fishing and have spent hours watching your videos, so thank you very much. However, I am finding fish elusive! I have a Warrior 165 boat, based in Menai and I wondered if you have any knowledge of where I can find information on the species available and the best times of the year to fish them? As I understand it  the area is 'in-between' winter fish and warmer water fish. I have even heard that the area has been over-fished by trawlers for a long time and this has impacted the quantity. Or I'm just bad at this!! Hey-ho at least the scenery is stunning. keep up the good work.

Try and get in contact with a local small boat fishing club. They are sure to be able to help you.April is a changeover month for many places and around mid May I think you should be getting the summer species. But local boat anglers can give you the best time to fish at various marks. That's half the battle, being in the right place. Perseverance should pay, but remember...Knowledge is the key.Good luck.

Hi Graeme I have just brought a 17foot merry fisher (thanks to your vids) sat on the river Hamble and its my first boat, gagging to get out but our weather latley is not so awesome. Just wondering what sort of depths are ok for up tideing??
TAFishing
TAFishing - 10 years ago
Weather has indeed been truly shocking, mine hasn't been moved for months.I'm not bothered as Feb is a tough time of year. Anything 30-feet or under is OK for uptiding. You might want to wait until the weather settles down though. No point going in bad weather, especially in a small boat. Good luck with the venture, and send Mike in any pics you get of your catches.

Loving the videos Graeme and Mike. Are ye coming back to Cork this year? Out of curiosity what method of anchoring di you use? The Alderny method?
TAFishing
TAFishing - 10 years ago
Never actually fished Cork, but hope to do the south-west again .For anchoring I use a Bruce for sand/stony ground. And home-made grapnel anchor and cheap 10mm polyprop for rough ground. Trip anchors with cable ties. Haven't been using the Alderney ring method yet,but its coming. I just hand haul and pull out.Tricky fishing on my own now though.

Graeme, you remind me of Bruce Forsyth.
TAFishing
TAFishing - 11 years ago
Yes, most anglers use feathers for catching mackerel, but with all the commercial pressure they are under I would say its rare to get a hundred in one session. Sometimes we only just catch enough for bait, and its getting harder every year. I feel you might struggle to get 100 on each trip out in years to come. I can't even remember the last time I caught 100 mackerel. We only usually catch 10/20 for enough bait, then stop catching them.
TSPF2
TSPF2 - 11 years ago
I was just wondering, because I do this when I go out fishing on a boat, I use feathers for the mackerel and after about 5 mins (which normally gets me enough bait for 3-5 hours) and then I just use the mackerel for bait. I was just wondering if you do this because I use it and it's a good strategy, I've never finished without catching about one hundred fish.

I know what you mean, but that's just the way it is all over the world. Multipliers go on top of the rod. Fixed spools go underneath.

Hi Graeme just a question about reels. How come your fixed spool reels are left handed but your boat multipliers are right handed? Does it not and feel a bit odd? I've got all mine as left handed and it feels and makes sense. Cheers

Our boat rigged out cost around £14,000,but that's new. It would doubtless be more now. You can get cheaper second-hand boats but I looked at complete rubbish, driving miles to look at overpriced pieces of junk that looked OK in the photograph. So I went for new. Its a minefield out there, and you never know if the boat's hull has got any water ingress. I don't what to tell you. I don't think you'll get much for less than say £5000,and even then you don't know how the engine has been serviced.
Sren
Sren - 11 years ago
Hello Graeme. I just want to ask you if its possible to get a decent beginner boat for around 1700 pounds? Me and my dad really wants to get a "cheap" boat that we can use for fishing, and how much will it cost to get fishfinders, rodholders, etc?
TAFishing
TAFishing - 11 years ago
I was on a mark given me by Wayne Comben, north of the Nab.However, you can't fish bass in Langstone harbour, I believe they are still protected. I don't think anyone will tell you where to go bass fishing, as lots are sold ,at least that's what I am told. Wayne is the man to contact on our website. You won't get a bass mark, but you might get a tip or bait technique. Drop him an email,I am sure he will point you in the right direction.

8 years old, got a Starfish off Teignmouth beach, Devon on family holiday.Took it to local aquarium. Bad(and later, expensive)move as I saw all the fish in the aquarium and have never been the same since. My Dad fished with me when I was about age 14 to 21.Never nuts like I was. But we had some great laughs. He never took life too seriously. But he "left me too early" if you know what I mean. I'm lucky to have a laugh filming with Mike. Lots of father/son combos don't get that chance.

I still haul-up manually, even on my own, but I dare not anchor in fast tides single handed as I am up on the bow so can't run forward. Got the Alderney Ring, as long as you follow procedure of not running over your own anchor rope you should be OK.Better to fish two people on a boat, if only to haul anchor. I wear those rubber garden gloves for extra grip on the rope. Always take care pulling up anchors. Wear a lifejacket.

TAFishing - 11 years ago
Listen, don't worry, you are so right .I swim about as good as a Dodo with a backpack of lead, so its a one-way ticket. Mike's off filming in Swanage today but before he left I got him to put a mention up on the film to remind people. I wouldn't dream of driving my car without a seat belt yet loads of us jump in boats and power off. I bet there are hundreds nodding in agreement that they forget to put on their kill switch. Well spotted.

Don't ever get fooled by buying a boat (hull) that your are finished. You are generally just starting !! A pit into which your pour money(Continually !) But fun. Or so I keep telling myself. The Wilson Flyer is about the best value starter boat you could buy, but by the time you add engine/trailer/electronics etc I guess I'm into about £14,000.Its probably more, but I try not to think about it. Our 550lb odd Porbeagle shark makes it all worthwhile. Had 3 different species over 100lb in it.
