Liked your illustration, but it seems like this would have a good case to talk about using a preventer as a additional safety measure. Also saw your video on setting up a preventer.

Never hunts to add other safety methods that would apply in keeping things safe.

Good advice, I like your vids.
A crash gybe of Gosport in 45 knots back in 05 nearly decapitated me, luckily I heard it coming, but it missed me by mm's.
After that time I vang out the boom with a line , even if I'm running dead downwind.

Yep, a preventer is a really good idea if you will be running or broad reaching for extended periods. Good to hear you are O.K. Flying jibes can be really dangerous. Thanks for your comments.

Also the main can act more as a sail, promoting better flow and lower pressure across the leeward side. However sometimes you don't want the main all the way out because in light wind the spin ends up too covered by the main, not filling completely.

I believe it's a good idea to keep the mainsail boom out even if it blankets the headsail or spinnaker a bit. It can be safer in shifty winds. Thanks for your comment!

Actually, that's just a poled out Genoa on a boat I crewed on some years ago. We were running offshore bound for the Caribbean. We rigged the sails wing and wing, with the Genny on one side and the main out on the other. We had the mainsail set on a preventer. Very true. But what about chaffing of the sail against the spreaders (in a fractional rig with angled spreaders)?

Moja, ease the boom out until the sail just makes contact; then pull the boom in just enough so that the sail clears the spreaders.
