A week ago on the the Swiftsure Bank at the mouth of the Strait of Juan De Fuca we were evading near misses of freighters in fog who had cut the corner of established shipping channels. Several dozen salmon fishing boats were on the bank and several reported near misses. When you have a freighter closing on zero bearing in the fog, it's cruising at 15 or better knots, you're cruising at the same in rough waters, it leaves only moments to choose an evasive course as you can only guess by fog horns on which side it will pass. Port or Starboard might be the wrong choice and when you see the bow of a freighter a few boat lengths away, it's bow wake taller than your boat, it's bow towering above you on a collision course, fast action with no hesitation is your only course...
