SPRINGFIELD -- With a pleasant weather forecast for the Labor Day weekend the water may be calling your name. But before you leave home, safety should be in the forefront of your mind. In 2012, 11 people were killed in boating-related accidents in Ohio. Already this year, there have been 7 reported deaths.The Army Corps of Engineers says 90% of all accidents on the water are entirely preventable.The weekend has already begun in Buck Creek State Park as locals undock and unwind.When it comes to safety its all about common sense and taking precautions.Make sure all your equipment is on the boat. There is certain equipment that all boasts need and its up to the operator of the boat to know what they need before they go out on the water, State Watercraft Officer Don Siler explained on Friday.But if you have any questions, Officer Siler and six others will be on the water around the clock at Buck Creek. In fact., they'll be stationed at the main dock to check your gear before you even set sail. They'll also be checking for alcohol, which is prohibited in all state parks. Were gonna talk to them and if they are empaired its just like out on the road .08, Siler explained.And just like on the road, if caught you may be fined and could go to jail. Siler says alcohol is involved in 50% of drownings.We don't drink on the jetskiis.
