It's summer boating season! This summer, my two year old is ready to grow out of the infant life jacket into a child's life jacket. I found this a little confusing when I started searching for the appropriate jackets, so here are a few tips for you to keep your little pirates nice and safe on board this summer. INFANT LIFE JACKET - Typically made for babies under 30 pounds - Include a big floatation device that goes around your baby's neck. This will roll your baby onto its back if they go overboard, heaven forbid - Most of the newer ones snap around the neck and zip up in the back. Make sure the strap goes between their legs securely so it stays in place CHILD LIFE JACKET - Made for children between 30 and 50 pounds - 30 pounds might be a little too small for the child size, so make sure you try it on them before you get on the boat - To test if your child is ready for this size, put the jacket on them and yank up on the shoulder part. If their head sits well below the shoulder part, this is unsafe. - Make sure you've got a snug fit on the jacket and that you've got the strap between their legs nice and secure so that the jacket stays in place GENERAL TIPS - Any life jacket you buy should be coast-guard approved. Click here for more info - http://bit.ly/anriQf. - Make sure that your life jackets are in good shape and have no frayed straps or punctured fabric - Every state has different laws for life vests. They have to do with the size of the child, type of vessel, etc. But in my opinion, it's best to leave babies in their life jackets as much as possible I'd love to hear your thoughts on summer safety.
