Yes, stay the fuck out of my way. Ship I sailed on came a blonde one of ramming a sail boat who tacked across our bow in confined waters. He screamed bloody murder "I HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY UNDER SAIL". The laws of physics doesn't give two fucks about your "right of way" pal.

No but most vhf marine antennas are of a j pole design the top 4' of fiberglass is just a empty covering. Keep antenna as vertical as possible.

Aidan Banana imo as long as you can get to a lifejacket within a minute or two that's fine. (Assuming of course there is more than one of you on the boat and you are in relatively calm waters)
