I have access to a 200 HP Evinrude outboard, and a 9.9 Johnson outboard. Since I am under 16, I can only use boats with motors up to 50 HP making me only able to use the 9.9.

I go out into an open area in that thing as much as I can. Since I'm only 100 pounds and 15, light boat, light motor, I fly across the water. However in the open waters, it's almost always wavy, and my cottage is near a channel that is flooded with large yachts.

To yacht owners, when you see a small boat with a small driver, don't continue driving around with your stern dug into the water. Your waves are huge, especially when you're in a channel where the small boat has nowhere to run off to.
Have some common sense please.

Do you think 3-5 foot waves are rough weather for a 24.5 foot boat?

Zachary Friend it’s a little rough. Ideally would not go in them, but shouldn’t be too bad

If you slow down won't that risk the nose getting swamped . Also hitting on an angle can't that cause you to flip easier?

The Atlantic in South FL is a whole different beast than what most boaters are used to. Even in the North Atlantic where there are huge swells, the waves are almost always organized with consistent periods. In South FL, our storms are such that you have multiple pressure systems creating energy in all different directions. Between the swell, inconsistent periods, heavy winds, and extreme chop we have here (even on some flat days,) our seas really put you to the test on any boat smaller than ~32 feet on some days. I've been out in swells where NOAA buoys are only reading 2-3 feet, the swell isn't huge, but there are waves crashing in all directions and it's not so simple as to take a wave head on so you don't get broadsided or to take a wave on at a slight angle, because every 100 feet the seas change drastically!

OK , thanks for the advice . growing up my family had and still has a 17 foot bowrider however now I'm in fort Lauderdale and been going out on my friends new 21 foot sea ray out on the ocean it was a bit more challenging . it has plenty of power 200hp verado but it can get rough out there.

+Kef103 Hi Kef103 - If you dramatically reduce speed the bow certainly will fall for a moment or two, so while a slow-down is fine, you don't want to suddenly chop the throttle right as a mountain of water is heading your way. Also note that we never recommend going so slow that the boat isn't on plane (maybe yes, maybe no, depending on the situation) but just recommend against "racing across the waves at full throttle". As far as flipping goes, as long as you don't go beyond 45-degrees the danger won't be exaggerated much at all. That said, if a boat is seriously in danger of being flipped we'd have to suggest that there's been a major break-down in the captain's judgement. It takes an awfully big or steep wave to flip a modern powerboat, even running at an angle to the waves beyond 45-degrees, and when this is a real possibility the boat shouldn't be in that place at that time, period. Good luck on the water!
