Boating Tips & Tutorials: Storing Your Dock Lines on the Lifeline

After leaving the dock, you'll need to store your dock lines in an accessible place. One way to do this is by coiling your dock lines and tying them to the lifeline. Captain Dave shows us how. Coil your line, making even loops as you go. Spin the line as you coil to ensure you take the memory or hockles out of the loops. Create even loops until you have about one and a half coils length of line left. Wrap this line one and a half times around the coil and pull the line through the top of your coil. Use a slip hitch to attach the coil to your lifeline. As long as there is pressure pulling down on the coil, your line is secure! Thanks for the video. I often single hand and was wondering if there is a method of securing a dock line in advance of dock arrival for a dock hand. What I mean is that I would like to secure my dock lines to the boat cleats in advance, then hang them off the lifeline for easy access, specifically for the bow line. I imagine coming into the dock favoring the bow, the dock hand retrieving the line from the lifeline, them pivoting the stern in. I can then pass/toss the stern line if necessary.
