Great vid but one thing i would like to add that mainly apply's to older boat owners, do not take boat hands off the wheel, some boats will whip around suddenly and make a very dangerous situation.

You are absolutely right. My boat has electric power steering so I don't think about that anymore.

How do you come off a plane? Do you trim down first before slowing down or do you just leave it trim up? I'm new at boating.

This is a great, and MUCH NEEDED video!!! It blows my mind that many states don't require a boater safety course. Driver's Ed is required for cars so boater safety should be required for boats. You can kill someone in a boat just as easily as you can kill someone in a car.

No big deal man. If I were to say that I didn't use other people's videos to get information for mine I'd be lying. I'm the first to admit that I don't know everything. I spend a lot of time researching a video before I film it. That way I'm giving the viewer as much inforation as possible.

Tip: leave the killswitch cord attached to the pfd at all times. That way u have to go grab the pfd to start the motor and since u have the pfd just put it on.

That lake gets pretty bad. Been out there a few times when there were mild storms. Last weekend there my buddy said he couldn’t even see over the next crest standing on the bow! Let us know the next time you’re in town. Maybe I’ll head up with the boat to say hello!

Gene, I know you have experience with this. Last weekend in Kentucky I had my old town topwater old out on a smaller lake fishing a point. I was in maybe 3 1/2 foot of water. I nearly was killed by a boat driver pulling a tuber. He came whipping down the lake, swung in along the shoreline, then swung back out to whip his tuber outside the wake. I swear man, this tuber missed me by barely 8 feet. I have a giant orange flag on the back of my kayak, I was sitting up high, I mean there was no reason for him not to see me. I started waving my arms and screaming, and this assclown acted like I was in the wrong. People have no respect for kayakers and you hear every once in a while someone getting hit or flipped in a kayak. I've had other incidents of people running full throttle so close to me their wake came over and in the kayak. If it was a sit in I would have been swamped or flipped. It happens enough where I Don't even like kayak fishing on lakes with motorboat. I've even had fishermen in bass boats intentionally take off or drive in right near me to try to run me out of an area. People out there are dangerous. Jet skis are the worst by far. They never know the right of way rules and will zig zag all over the place. I saw a guy in a jet ski run strait into a submerged island because he ignored the marker buoys. Hit it so hard it damaged his jet ski beyond repair. Then was upset because it wasn't marked better. There was a triangle of caution buoys around it.

This is why I recomend having a video camera on the boat. If they do this just record it and turn it into authorities. They will hopefully be able to pull the numbers off the boat and take care of business from there.

Jeff Fields yeah i fish nolin a lot, but usually in my little aluminum v hull boat, which still gets rough with lake traffic. I usually fish the moutadier side, and red rock area. I have family friends that have a place back behind red rock in the cove with all the flooded timber. Ive caught boatloads of fish in that cove, but also in dog creek area, ponderosa area. Ive only been up by Wax a few times.

The lake that this happened in was taylorsville, i was stupid for going on it anyways, small lake with tons of boat traffic. Didnt catch anything, 1 tiny dink early early before the water got all crazy. Its just so close to home is why i went there. That place and guist creek. Im going to try a lake in indiana tomorrow thats electric motors only, its kinda small but has a lot of pads and grass, perfect size for kayak fishing.
Jeff Fields
Jeff Fields - 4 years ago
This is why I don’t kayak lakes really. Nolin is the worst for tubes and jet skis running right up to you while you’re fishing

Make sure any auto inflate PFD’s you have stowed are in a waterproof bag. Any little bit of water that gets into your hatches will trigger an inflation in your hatch. Replacing the cartridges and water sensor discs is fairly expensive. Learned the hard way more than once. Great content, great delivery. Love your channel.

Thanks Gene, great info that you will never get from some of the big boat sellers, I know they didn't pass any info off to me when I bought my first one, even though I told them it was my first boat. Another aspect that would be good to cover is how to properly decelerate the boat as you come into where you want to be, I almost sunk my boat, (probably not, but I took on a lot of water all the way up the back to the seats), with over run on the back the first time, and I still have a problem with figuring it out sometimes, simply because no one tells you these things. Thanks for doing what you do for us Gene, your videos have helped me be a better boater and fisherman with everyone you put out.

* Free * USCG approved boat safety training with state specific laws: boatus.org
Make sure .org because .com is the commercial site. Only place I found that it was free. My insurance was also significantly reduced (State Farm). Also, please learn to use the safety equipment (fire extinguisher, flares, etc).

PFD's and Kill Switches?

I'm too comfortable on the water but I learned a valuable lesson last February (2019) on Guntersville. Running across the lake back to South Sauty at dusk, water temps in the upper 50's, strong current in the river. I'm not paying attention...what could we hit running across an open lake right? No PFD, kill switch not attached. Fishing partner sitting in front on me. I've got a center console G3.

All of a sudden, out of my periphery, a red blur flies by. "What in the world was THAT?" It was a channel marker...1000 - 1500 pounds worth of one. My buddy thought I was messing with him but I never saw it. He said he could have reached his hand over the side of the boat and touched it when it flew by.

If we'd have hit that thing I'm sure we'd both be dead...probably drowned or died of hypothermia. Thank you God.

Christopher Terrien - 4 years ago
Its not about how comfortable you are on the water, you can be a 50 year vet on the water, and your story tells it all, "Shit Happens" when you least expect, no one can ever be prepared for the unknown. I have seen boaters poping along hit a wave bad and get tossed from the boat, and the boat ended up 100's of yards a way doing donuts in the lake until it ran ashore, his boat was trashed and I am sure he had a hefty price to pay for damages to the persons shore line and dock the boat plowed. I live in Texas, and we just passed a law that Kill switch cord is mandatory if the boat is moving over idle speeds now, its called , Kali's Law, because of the 16 year old girl that was killed by a run away boat prop. I would rather use the kill switch than be the one responsible for a death.

We have a lake here where it gets white capped all the time. One of my scariest time was when the wind picked up and we were got caught in a 24mph wind about 2 miles away from the dock. Literally we did at least 5-6 nose dive at least, going back. We were soaked wet. When the waves came, we literally saw all sky...then all water. That lake is horrible....but fishing is awesome! haha.

Take it out after each trip. It prevents a lot of negative things happening to your baot and it prevents the spread of some invasive species from being transported from one lake to another. It's a serious crime in some states to travel with your pluck in the boat as well.
