Hi there, great technique if you have 2 people on the boat. 1 handling power and tiller, and 1 who is handling fender and collecting bow line at reversing.

However if you are single handed, reversing into an aft spring line is better as:
1. you dont need the tiller, just the power - lock your steering towards the left and walk to handle power and line. Your boat pivots nose out then
2. you can handle power and fender and line yourself at the back within a step range
3. you are not dependent on the wheel effect of your screw as you drive away fwd - and
4. you have immediate control at pulling away as your boat steering reacts faster to fwd power

Minus is that pivoting backwards you rboat is typically wider so you have to watch your back not scraping the wall. This requires more precision steering.

Thanks for your comments. As you point out, the rudder has no effect when backing down against a springline. The boat will pivot around the belay point no matter the rudder position. All discharge current is being thrown forward and none striking the rudder blade. Dicey if you have a wind vane or other installed gear aft.
