Hey Mike, great vid. I wish I had seen this a few weeks ago lol. I bought a 1965 1436. It had a real sold casting deck on it but needed to be removed because they used steele for the framing. Thos revealed a few issues aka patch job. I am not to worried because like you I like to fix things but avoiding money sucking problems should be avoided. I will send some pics of my progress and most definitely be coming to you for advice. Be easy brother and keep the vids coming.

I literally have done all these Sketcht mods to my boat lol. It didn't leak bad, the random was fine, I just didn't want anything to happen in the future. So I have that boat all silicone caked and big giant transom supports to my bench. And I fish this boat constantly. Just know what you're getting into and don't over spend. You can get a shit box that gets you on the water for virtually free.

How much of a nuisance leak is acceptable to your standards?
I know ideally you want no water and I've sealed the best I can but idk if zero is possible.

It would probably be better if I built another boat but there's a very personal reason I chose this one.

Good rule of thumb is to keep tackle limited to fit inside a backpack. No need to build 20 compartments for a stores worth of tackle. Over kill exist. Small boats werent designed to haul enough gear to run a charter lol

Michael Lopez when your channel grows more and it can provide cash to put into more builds without having to invest from your main source of income "job" , let me know, im willing to do a collab and pass over my boat so you can finish what i started and do a give away or what not. Im not into the limelight portion of youtube and i think you can pull it off and it will help create an interest for folks to enjoy fishing. Im fortunate enough to have a big pontoon and i know how it can suck without a boat.

Nice video. I ended up getting a really cheap Sears 14' Jon boat with a custom built trailer for $400. Worth it, but a lot of work. Had to redo the hubs and bearings and the wiring. Also painted the trailer and added new hardware for it. Boat also needs lots of work but I know it is pretty decent quality as I have seen some of those Sears boats take decades and decades of abusive, but still not have leaks. I think one important part to mention to people is when they are buying a boat to check the prices on craigslist to the price of a new boat. I see a lot of old crappy 14' Jon boats on craigslist going for $2000 when you could buy an old trailer for a couple hundred then get a brand new boat for $700. Where I am the marinas sell new Lowe and Aluminiumcraft 14" riveted Jon boats for $700.

Michael, my boat had 2 support bars from the transom to the bench. Exactly as you mentioned. I will look for cracks at the base of the transom. According to the owner he wanted to put a larger motor on it so he had the bars added for extra support. Thanks for the tip. Great video. Lots of valuable information. Keep up the great work!

Well if the transom support isn't cracked, then it might be legit. Just look at the support and see if it's cracked, bent, or has pulled rivets. It might still be good.

what's your opinion... after I did the front casting deck mod, it mad the boat stiff. its a 1958, 1648 flat bottom. is this a bad thing overall or at all? The hull is pretty thick too.
