There is certainly a lot of tournaments across the country that have this style. From the ABA series, BASS OPENS and the FLW BFL and COSTA SERIES events. It is a great way for a new angler who is just starting out and wants to explore tournament fishing all the way to the guy who already owns a boat himself but would much rather hang out in the back of the boat and make new friends! Of course there is also a wide range of boaters and different personalities which can lead to some interesting stories as well as some great memories! He started out fishing for walleyes and fishing in local walleye tournaments, but then in his mid 20's, he caught the BASS BUG and has been hooked every since. He competed at the highest level in bass fishing on the Bassmaster Elite Series for a number of year until he ran out of $$ money $$. Lotsa great info Travis! I hope we get a chance to fish together this year Im doing (at least) 3 Northeast BFL's and 2 Northern Costa's. Hopefully my tackle bag will not give you (or any of my boaters) an aneurysm! ;-)

love the video, as someone looking to start a YouTube channel. would love to see a video on gopro set up. how many gopros, where, keeping them charged etc. any tips would help! thanks
SmallmouthCrush
SmallmouthCrush - 6 years ago
I could do that.....if you head over to flukemaster who is a very popular youtube he did a video when he hit 100K subs on his set up. That was the video I used when I first started to get an idea of what was needed. You can do a search for it on youtube. It was done probably a year and half ago or so.

I would suggest the life jackets that are wearable while fishing so it's one less thing for the boater to wait on
SmallmouthCrush
SmallmouthCrush - 6 years ago
That certainly helps if they keep it on. Normally I find that if a non boater sees me keep my life jacket on they do as well because they know we may only be fishing this spot for a bit. If they see me take it off then they normally do the same.

For the most part nobody really steps on anyone's toes. At least that is my observation. It really is pretty simple when it comes to the rules if you have a conversation as to your expectations before take off.
Dan Hancuff
Dan Hancuff - 6 years ago
i fully understand the perspective from the pro's perspective, i guess the co position is supposed to be for beginners and i just worry about growing the sport when participating sounds like something where there's all these unwritten rules and you're stepping on people's toes and the pro kinda wishes you'd just sit in the back, pay for gas, and stay out of the way.

Ill tell ya what. As a competitive non-boater, I don't do much small talk either. Casting towards the front is just asking for trouble, it's understood that it's the boater's water. I have 180 degrees to cast so I can manage with that no problem. You don't wanna bring your garage with you anyway, it'll just slow you down. As for netting the fish, that's a mutual thing. We net each other's fish. Plus when the day is done, I don't have a boat to close down, hop on my trailer, pull out of the water and tow 1000 miles back home. Life as a co ain't so bad trust me!

When fishing offshore and no one else is around, do you shut the console graph off or do you leave it on for the non boater?
SmallmouthCrush
SmallmouthCrush - 6 years ago
I do turn it off. But if they ask me to keep it on sonar I will keep it on for them. Unless it is a shallow area that I feel I need to be in stealth mode.

Great video.    Is there anything more frustrating than when your non boater is trying to cast to the water you're targeting at the front,  like the guy is almost casting right over your head?   That can be an awkward conversation...haha.

Great video! I know when I fish as a boater I hate when bags are all over my floor. Even worse is when it’s the bag and all their coats and bibs just thrown in my floor. Certainly helps me pick what I bring when I fish as a co.

Excellent video Travis, I’ve been a co in the BFLs and Ram Opens for about six years. I’ve never had a bad experience in those six years and I think it’s because I follow many of the guidelines you outlined. We’re all there to catch fish and have an enjoyable time on the water. I try to be very respectful of my boater, his boat, and his water. I think the best compliment is when a boater tells me he had a great time and would feel lucky to draw me again, fortunately it’s happened a few times. I love your videos and look forward to watching the upcoming season

Great info Travis...
Hypothetical question... You mentioned that some coanglers might have health issues etc and long runs on Ontario and Champlain can be brutal.... have you ever had a co-angler tell you he can't do it and ask to get off the boat? Or have you heard of this ever happening? I unfortunately don't fish pro-am's anymore because of a neck issue that could never handle that type of a pounding, and understand that its a part of the tournament game.
Just curious?

SmallmouthCrush ....Travis... having had some nasty runs across Winnepesaukee and the Plattsburgh area of Champlain I can attest to how rough it can be! Unfortunately...."Life(shit) happens"....so I now live through you all with your tournament videos!
Keep up with the great content and continue to do what you love as long as you can because...You never know when your last tournament might be!
SmallmouthCrush
SmallmouthCrush - 6 years ago
I never had it happen nor have I ever heard that happen. I can see where it certainly could happen though in some long runs it can be pretty unpleasant. Everyone I ever had with me could handle it although they may have prefered I didn't make those long runs they certainly understood why I was making them and I try to make them as comfortable as I can.
