"The Coil" is called Flemming. And the 'tag end' is called bitter end.

+ tanguerochas -- You're correct about making a Flemish coil being called Flemishing, but you're wrong about the end of the line not being called the bitter end. In North America that's one common name for it, and it has nothing to do with a mythical metal piece IN the rope. Bitts are paired vertical posts on the deck of a ship, or on a wharf, pier, dock, or quay, and the bitter end of a mooring line is tied to it, thus the name. See: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bitts

That is "Flemishing" not Flemming. It is called the working end. A bitter end has a bit (metal piece) in it.

The major problem with the coil is that it does not allow the underside of the line to dry properly, especially after a rain. The coil looks great for dockside parties, but the chain makes your dock lines last much longer.

A Flemish Flake, aka "Coil" is a nautically great looking method of handling excess dockline. However, some marinas have pretty rough wallways to prevent slipping. These rough surfaces can make cooling lone difficult and can cause excess wear on your line. Try using a smooth thin board or cardboard ro "build" yoir coil. Then simply slide uour coil onto the dock.
