Captain Eric Sorensen shows you how to get your planing-hull boat with an outboard or sterndrive engine on plane, or riding on top of the water, using proper engine trim (or trim tabs) for stability, fuel-efficiency, and safety while avoiding ventilation (pulling in air) and porpoising. First trim the engines in all the way, tell everyone to hold on, then accelerate gradually onto plane. As the boat speeds up and the bow comes down, start trimming the engines out. When the bow is down and you have a clean wake astern, you're planing.
