How to Get Your Boat On Plane Using Engine Trim | BoatUS

Captain Eric Sorensen shows you how to get your planing-hull boat with an outboard or sterndrive engine on plane, or riding on top of the water, using proper engine trim (or trim tabs) for stability, fuel-efficiency, and safety while avoiding ventilation (pulling in air) and porpoising. First trim the engines in all the way, tell everyone to hold on, then accelerate gradually onto plane. As the boat speeds up and the bow comes down, start trimming the engines out. When the bow is down and you have a clean wake astern, you're planing. New guy here. It gets confusing when my trim says up or down and you keep saying in and out. Which is which?

That's awesome, Jim! We really appreciate it. The BoatUS Foundation does a great job with all of it's many critical projects, and the course is excellent (at a phenomenal price!). Not sure where you're located, but if you need some hands-on boating time with a licensed captain, the Foundation has started offering affordable on-water training courses at a limited number of locations around the country. We have about 20 events this year and will be doubling that number in 2019. Learn more and find out if there are courses near you at http://www.boatus.org/on-water. If not, keep checking back!

what direction is 'trim out' - explain for beginners

Simply think of the term "OUT" to mean "OUT" towards out of the water, and "IN" to mean "INTO" the water

Down is in, Up is out. Think about the position of the prop relative to the stern of the boat. As you trim "Down" the prop is coming IN towards the boat. As you trim "Up" the prop is going OUT from boat.

When we're talking about trimming out, that means operating the "up" switch on the end of the throttle control, which moves the outboard motor farther away from the transom.

Mr. K it means bringing your engines up toward the surface of the water. Watch the close up of the engines when he is demonstrsting.

My problem is porpoising

Lots of people have this same problem, Michael. This can be corrected by trimming the engine in slightly to bring the bow down. Hope this helps. Have a safe and fun boating season!
