And remember turning momentum. The boat will generally continue to rotate in the same direction, given no other forces. This can be useful to know, because you can rely on some extra turning while preparing for the forward part. Conversely, don't expect the boat to stop rotating just because you've turned the wheel...

One important point not mentioned is using the propellers characteristics, ie normally single motors are right handed. This means when in reverse they will naturally want to go to the left (port), so doing the turn as shown is made much easier than if you attempt to go right hand down in reverse. Same principle applies when approaching a wharf/pontoon. Counter rotating twins are even better :-)

Keep to nose of the boat pointed at the shore / shallow water that way keeps your motor in deep water …
