The ramp is for unloading and loading the boat, NOT checking oil, belts, etc. Literally, offloading should take 2 minutes on the ramp, loading maybe 5. The towing vehicle is a stop and go float off after the boat motor was fired up at home with water running through the pumps. Easier to fix probs in the garage than in a parking lot.

While your on the ramp " dilly-dallying" with the dip stick checking your oil, go ahead and tell the wife to throw all the inflatable towable water toys on the ramp and blow them up with the portable air compressor. Have her check the tires on the trailer while she's at it and give them a shot of air. The five guys waiting in line to launch won't mind since this is their only lake day available for the next three weeks....

No worries. Take your time on the ramp. After you check oil, belts & hoses go ahead and pull your spark plugs to evaluate for rich/lean & gap them all. Be sure to do compression checks on all cylinders, pull out your timing light & check timing too. Also, be sure to pull a sample of your v-drive fluid. Go ahead and send it off to the lab. We'll wait until it comes back. Heck, while we're waiting go ahead and lube your steering & throttle cables. Might as well replace that burned out courtesy light while your at it...

No idea why they spent the first 5 mins explaining how to make sure the prop and rudder is protected, only to say that there is a guard that does all that"

They were addressing the issue for those who do NOT have such a trailer, as well as being mindful of the issue in shallow water or on shallow-angle ramps.

Floyd Burdett

Inboard engine...Outboard drive unit ... I/O or inboard/outboard...
Stern-drive ... Drive Unit mounted on the stern... They both sort of say the same thing, BUT you could have various Different types of drive units that attach to the stern, or outboard of the boat...

Stan M - 7 years ago
Inboard outboard is the original term used when they were designed in the early 60's. That is still the correct term to be used today. I guess for some reason today like everything else people want to be politically correct so they say sterndrive.

You do any stupid shit like checking your oil on the ramp and I'm going to back over your ass. THE WORST ARE THE IMBOSOLS THAT BACK UP ALL CADDYWOMPAS ON A 3 BOAT RAMP OR DOWN THE MIDDLE OF A 2 BOAT RAMP AND TAKE THE WHOLE THING UP!!!!

Best way to launch an inboard is back up quick and deep with all the straps removed and let it drift off the trailer. If you power unload it you will be going through carpet once a season. Inboards way to much and chew through carpet quick. Same thing when loading back trailer in deep so your boat barely touches the carpet.

It’s best to check the oil in the prep lane that way you won’t piss people off taking up the lane
Jacob Freedman

hewitt52 totally agree, how about check the oil at the prepare ramp and check the motor health when at the dock
Regal2800
Regal2800 - 8 years ago
+hewitt52 That and it's best to check oil level while the boat is on a level surface, not while it's on an incline.

Where is u helmet, grandma ? Bow hook is off mine at the top of the ramp, stomp on the brakes just at the right time.
Floyd Burdett
Floyd Burdett - 6 years ago
Good luck with that 'launch method'... stomp the brakes on a steeper ramp...and you could use your cell phone to call a towing company to pull your vehicle out of the lake.
Lots of things that can go wrong with that method, and even damaging your boat, trailer, and/or vehicle..and spill or lose overboard items inside your boat...
Josh Whitaker
Josh Whitaker - 9 years ago
True, make sure it will run before you release the boat. False, you check things on the engine while on the ramp. You don't check a damn thin on the ramp. You do that stuff else where and not in everybody else's way
sysinu

lol... Let's check our oil on the boat ramp.  If you're taking longer than a minute to launch your boat, you're doing something wrong.

What about unplugging your trailer before, to ensure you don't short out the trailer lights?

btw I have a Nautique with bunk trailer. (don't loosen the bow strap on a roller trailer ) Loading it is the reverse. As the trailer backs in I idle the boat in drive it on the bunks. Turn it off, go to the bow, hook the bow strap, crank it up snug and give the driver the go signal. Target under a minute from the time the trailer hits the water to when it is out. I have it down to a science. best times are les than 30 sec trailer in the water.
Glenn Sullivan
Glenn Sullivan - 11 years ago
Before leaving the house do your coastguard safety check and check your oil, belts, plugs ect. Test start the boat a the house. At the staging area turn it over for 1 sec, to make sure it will start. Remove the rear tie downs and loosen the front bow strap a few inches . Back down the ramp, I am in the bow, once in the water all I do is lean over the front, release the bow hook then go back the boat off the trailer. I target less than 1 min with the trailer in the water. Some are under 30 sec

V-Drive is still an Inboard set-up...all of the engine, transmission, and drive components are Inside the boat... whether a V-Drive or a Direct-Drive arrangement... (smile)

I like to hold my foot on the brake with left foot and start accelerating with right foot while taking left foot off of the brake when taking the trailer out of the water that way the truck doesn't roll backwards and start going toward the water. Especially when to boat is loaded.

I always do all my checks and start the engine while im still home, i let it run for few minutes and also put the plug in at this time..... I disagree with what this guy said on this video to check the oil on the ramp, the motor is at an angle and will give you a false reading on the dip stick... the boat/motor needs to be on level ground to check the oil!!!!!

Getting on & off the ramp quickly is so very important to be considerate of others. Get your stuff together in the STAGING AREA. Two points of disagreement with the video: 1, Checking the oil, and opening up the engine box to sniff around. You check your oil before you leave the house. 2, You should have the bilge blower on from the time u board, all the way down the ramp and into the H2O. Do check your stuffing box & bilge area once the motor has been started for wata! Good video, and Thanks!

@enterprise59 I agree with that - especially when you're alone. But I have seen people take up two launch positions, do repairs on the boat on the ramp, stop half way up the ramp and start to empty the boat, and all kinds of inconsiderate behaviour. I sat on the lake for one hour one day waiting to get off. That is frustrating.

Good video. Being a new owner to an inboard, I was amazed at how different launching, etc really is from a traditional outboard/inboard-outboard boat. 25+ years of those did not prepare me for a true inboard. But like the video says...take it slow and easy and you'll be fine. don't try to launch for your first time on a busy day...practice first.
