Tips for Winterizing Your Boat

As the summer boating season nears its end, it is almost time to get your boat ready for winter storage. While you want to make sure that you have the best NJ Boat Insurance so that your boat is covered in the event of some unforeseen situation, there are a few simple things that you can do in order to properly prepare you boat for the chill of winter. Engine Run your boat’s engine to warm it up and then change the oil. Doing so when it is warm will help to drain impurities. Flush the engine with water and then circulate Antifreeze through the manifold. You should also change the transmission fluid and clean spark plugs with ‘fogging oil’ or WD-40. Make sure to thoroughly clean all dirt and grease. Gently lubricate the engine exterior. Fuel To help prevent build-up from evaporated fuel deposits, drain the fuel from the carburetor. Use fogging oil to lubricate pistons and cylinder walls. Use water resistant grease on the propeller shaft. Change the fuel filter. Refill your fuel tank to prevent build up of condensation while your boat is in storage. Water System Make sure to completely drain water tanks and water heater. Disconnect the water heater. Run non-toxic anti-freeze through the system to prevent any remaining water from freezing. Empty and clean holding tanks at approved facilities. Add anti-freeze and pump through hoses. Interior Remove all personal belongings including valuables, electronics and safety gear. Open and clean all lockers and drawers. Allow cushions to set aside to ensure they are given time to dry out. Open and clean out refrigerator and freezer and allow them to defrost and dry completely to avoid mold. Storage The best place for storage is out of the water. You want to make sure that the boat is properly covered. Make sure that the interior and exterior of the boat are properly cleaned of algae and barnacles. Open seacocks to drain and remove the battery. This is a good time to give your boat a good wax job to help prevent build up next year. In the event that you are storing your boat in the water, close seacocks and check shafts and rudders for leaks. Ensure the battery is fully charged. Periodically check on the boat to ensure its safety. If stored in water that may freeze, consider a bubbling system or de-icing device around your boat.
