A few mistakes in this video, to check compression you need to fully open up throtle. Second you need to know what kind of compression that particular engine your buying works with. Having same or similar compression on cilinders do not tell you that engine is good or in good shape. If that engine works with 160 psi and you have both cilenders at 135 psi....well that engine is no good. Also need to hear an engine run, a non running engine wont give you an idea how is the engine. If the guy salling it wont run it dont buy it. If you run it you will find out lots of things, if impeller is good, if crank & bearings make any noise, you also need to check if gears are good etc etc.

Jim Watts - 6 years ago
This guy is putting out bad info, especially on the compression testing. Each engine has a high and low compression acceptable range. Each cylinder must be within that range. Having unequal pressures is common and as long as all cylinders produce acceptable pressures don't worry about it unless there is an unacceptable spread according to manufactures specification. NOTE: Any that uses a GD adjustable wrench on spark plugs (etc) knows nothing about mechanics so verify everything before you go and destroy your engine or throw money at a basket case. If you don't know research the subject, preferably through real Engineers and/or certified mechanics. Good luck, USDOT Certified Chief Inspector, Jim

Gatorsrok
Gatorsrok - 6 years ago
You do not want to start the engine without water hooked up!! Worst thing you could do for it... You're not so much worried about the motor over heating, takes a minute to do or so depending on engine size, but the water pump/impeller relies on the water for its lubrication.... ITS ONLY RUBBER... so it takes SECONDS to start building up a decent amount of heat into the impeller and you risk cracking it or pieces coming off.... DO NOT START IT WITHOUT WATER
Uptin Sinclaire
Uptin Sinclaire - 6 years ago
With the spark plugs out there are no combustions happening so it won't hurt anything. You can probably run it for a few seconds with the plugs in and not hurt anything. More than a few seconds and you'll want to have it in water or hooked up to muffs on a hose to keep it from overheating.

I made the mistake of trusting owner on an 20hp 1985 johnson and asked him about gear oil instead of checking it.Got motor home and no gear oil in  except for a tablespoon or so came out and it was like black sludge!I was sick.Owner said he had no idea why it was empty when I contacted him.I could only drain and refill till it came out clean and it works so far in the half dozen times I used it..No leaks are being seen from seals.I just hope it was not run long before I bought it like that.Supposedly in storage for a long time and maybe it was drained for storage and never refilled.

Regardless, this dude doesn't know wtf he's talking about regarding compression testing. First of all you need throttle wide open. Secondly, the difference in compression is not the only thing that matters. I wouldn't buy an engine that has 50lbs on cyl 1 and 52lbs on cly 2.

Have u ever de scaled the cooling system? Basically the run a special solution through the cooling ports and the entire system. This solution is like a clr or something that just dissolves salt and mineral deposits. They let this stuff run for hours using a pump. It eats away all this buildup inside the motor. At the end you can see all the crap that comes out. Very impressive. Yamaha dealer did mine. Made a big difference. There are many YouTube videos on this subject.

so after watching this you didnt say if that motor was just total junk due to the salt you found in the water journals or is there a way to remove it after its that bad? Obviously flushing after coming out of salt water with fresh water would prevent it but after its that bad is it toast??? or fixable? Also, I just acquired my first boat and it has a 1963 Gale sovereign 60hp outboard motor. a motor that old should i even mess with checking it over trying to make it run, finding parts or should i just consider something more modern? just wondering if parts can still be found. Ive read they are basically evinrude motors...

I have a 1990 Johnson 200hp. The compression were all within 5psi but they're in the low to mid 80's. What's the difference between high psi vs low psi? What's what the highest psi an outboard motor can produce and what's considered low in psi for an outboard motor?
A Shore
A Shore - 7 years ago
no you are good! its really how much it varies that's important, not the actual readings. those older looper 3.0's had lower compression heads during some years. my 225 has 105-111psi per cyl. so all good.

Great video. Interesting about differences you read in workshop manuals. Mine says compression evenness is more important that the usual PSI. They also quote 20 PSI as the max diff between cylinders vs your 10 PSI. But obviously the less diff the better. Other point I read was the importance of earthing the leads when testing compression. If you don't it says it can damage your ignition system. I'm also an offender there.
A Shore
A Shore - 7 years ago
grounding leads wont do crap. wont hard electronics at all. compression should be no more than 15psi variance. 20 is usually too much indicating a worn/stuck ring and/or scored cyl walls or blow head gasket. pop the heads off and have a peek just to be sure!

+Ryan Joyal you'll want to use the electric start. I did a comp check on my 90 hp and it takes about 3-4 seconds for your motor to peek compression on the cylinder. Take the plugs off each spark plug but leave the spark plugs in the cylinder! Mark the plugs so you know which plug goes where.

also, they are about 20% less fuel efficient than a DFI 2 stroke or 4 stroke at full power, 50% less at trolling speeds but still not bad. the sheer punch of these motors makes them so much fun to use over a 4 stroke as well

those are fantastic motors... smooth and extremely powerful. probably the best motor omc built. they put over $35 million just for r&d into that motor in the late 80s. they are also very reliable as long as you maintain it. fresh gas each year! honestly the 150 is more like 165+ hp and the 175 closer to 190, making them one of the fastest motors ever made for that size (2.6l)

Hi i had just purchased a boat with a mercury 2hp 8hp motor and for some reason it wont idle at low revs as well as smoke alot its blueish smoke and i have taken ot to a marine place and was told its not sparking well on low revs on one cyl.. my questions are 1. What would be causing alot of smoke and 2. Even if it has this problem at low revs does that mean that the motor isnt safe for me to use on fresh water for a few months while i source a brand new outboard.

Yes i figured either way for an old motor its not worth doing. Going to either sell it or keep it and learn how a outboard runs and just go ahead and purchase a brand new outboard. As by law in queensland i cant drive anything over 6hp anyway.
Shaun Olsen
Shaun Olsen - 8 years ago
She'll be right i can get a parson 6hp 4 stroke locally short shaft brand new for 900 aus locally. Just going to take me a few months as i am on a pension. Just for the time being i really wanted to take the boat out to have a bit of fun. Just worried that it running on one cyl at low revs being a 2 cyl it might blow up on me or something lol

Eric Krzyzanowski
Eric Krzyzanowski - 8 years ago
+Shaun Olsen the more oil you put in the gas the more it will smoke. All 2 stroke motors will smoke. I would check the compression on your motor because sometimes if you have low compression it will not idle at low speeds but yes you should use the motor till you find another motor if your motor is usable. I sell used motors

These Japanese motors are made from poor quality aluminium alloy which becomes porous and crumbly.  In addition the head bolts appear to be made from mild steel to ensure that the hexagons will shear off.  I know because I bought one on flea bay "Runs OK but overheats".  To be honest it needs new crankcases and a new head so its beyond economic repair. On the other hand the metals on British Seagull motors are so good that many of them outlast their owners.

It is advantageous to use High Tensile bolts even if they are only going into light alloy.  The accountants may not understand why but the difference is that HT bolts can usually be unscrewed.

you also want to see if the fly wheel has play up/down,test run it on the boat for a while and check the motor with a mechanics stethoscope for strange noises, and also when u buy a used out board motor replace the thermostats and the whole water pump,
DENNIS GRAY
DENNIS GRAY - 8 years ago
+Carry Smith If you don't have a stethoscope a flathead screwdriver will do the same. hold the tip to the motor and the handle to your ear. it should hum. not too loud. any ticking or grinding is a problem.

If they won't let you look under the cowl and won't let you do a compression check, they're hiding something.. Don't buy it. Period.

you should open the throttle up to max when you check the compression so the engine can suck in more air, when your pulling it over,

Nice video Eric. I am about to take apart a Suzuki DF115. Can I drop it off to you?  I like the 7:30 minute mark in this video, looks like a bomb went off after taking that yamaha apart.. I am a BIG FAN of Salt Away .  Salt destroys engines, i am on the Pacific Ocean. Many people will say " never been in salt water" etc etc about a engine, and thats cool. So many incredible animals in the sea  including the largest animal to ever live in earth, the Blue Whale. Thumbs up on your video

Hi i have a 1988 Suzuki dt30c and i have never seen any water or exhaust gases coming out of the secondary hole below the engine. do i have some thing wrong with the engine
all the other videos dt30c on you tube show water and exhaust gases coming out of the secondary. any advice would be helpful thanks regards simon
Eric Krzyzanowski

It comes out of the midsection because it cools the exhaust to make it quieter and it does not come out of the prob but some motors do.
simon crash
simon crash - 9 years ago
Thanks eric can you tell me why they exhaust out of the secondary and wouldn't  the engine sound louder or does  it stop and just come out of the prop thanks regards simon

Watch this video Engine start and Run Suzuki 30hp DT30C

That is how it should be pumping. If it is not pumping like that then you can have a problem with the thermostat not operating correctly.

if you were to flush the salted engine, would the water wash away the salt buildup?
Alesandro Kamcev
Alesandro Kamcev - 9 years ago
It would be pertfect to drive it in fresh water... why? Cuz when ur driving it for example on 4-5k RPM for whole season and than flush it at the end in burrel of fresh water on like 1-2k for 10min... it wont flush all sault.... So for 2 strokes engines few days on fresh water at the end of season is quite good... and also if its possible mix more oil and gas if it say 1% do it like 2-3%... so inside of engine stays oiled well over winter.
Eric Krzyzanowski
Eric Krzyzanowski - 9 years ago
You can use a product called SALT-AWAY it will get alot of it out but to get all of the stuff out you need to take the motor apart which is not really worth it unless you have a serious salt build up
VintageOutboardMan
VintageOutboardMan - 9 years ago
I have the exact same question...
Gabriel S.
Gabriel S. - 9 years ago
Exactly...would it reduce the salt buildup over time or does the engine need to be taken apart and the salt scraped out of the coolant passages by hand?

I would take out the spark plugs like he did in the video and check for little pieces of metal. Do the same for the lower unit. Check the bottom screw for little pieces of metal, if there is any could be a bad baring, washer, or gear those will need to be replaced. When you check your spark plugs see if they need to be replaced, and inspect the wires for cracks. They run about 20 bucks for a pair.  That will cause issues at running at high speeds it'll also makes a weird sound. Even small cracks can be an issue, reason being is the wires could be grounding to the head instead of the spark plug. If you're not getting ignition from one of the cylinders you will get black gas out of the exhaust when you pull your boat out. I would recommend taking the engine to a mechanic, if you got it for free no reason to not get it checked out. I got my engine checked out for less than two hundred dollars, fix my ignition problem.

Maybe check your shifting cables and make sure your shift rod's bolt is still connected. On the Johnsons and Evenrudes the rod bolt is under the carburetors, If it is an electric shift that will be something you'll have to research. I boats dot net have great diagrams you can look at, and the forums are great also.

That's a reasonable and logical answer. Believe it or not, I just spoke to a professional marine mechanic on the NE coast, and he said he's seen as low as 30 PSI even on Optimaxs, and as long as all six were even, they ran fine. He said that even Mercury told him this. Hard to believe, isn't it?

Saltwater just needs more maintenance. That 45 Honda was probably owned by someone who did not understand how important it is to flush it out after use and/ or seasonal storage. Ive owned many motors 20+ years old in salt and they have minty mint waterjackets.

BeulahLips
BeulahLips - 10 years ago
Do you have advice or experience with the bigger outboards? Like a 2.4 liter Merc XR4 V6? I've checked the compression and it's all within 3-5 psi on all six cylinders, but the factory Mercury manual doesn't specify what the PSI amount or range should be... and almost everyone I talk to has no opinion or different opinions. Certainly there must be a PSI range...just saying "within 10 psi of each other" is too vague. What if all cylinders 50 psi? Or 150 psi? There must be a certain value.

Make sure you run a compression check and that the compression is even on both cylinders or with in 10 psi of each other. The discoloring just shows who ever had the motor ran it a little bit hot

So if the cylinder head is discolored is that a No buy or if the water pump/impaler been replaced is it still okay to get if no visible cracks ?
