Wednesday, 13 September 1978. Just getting underway pier side in the port of Noumea, New Caledonia, Western French Polynesia, after a port visit during a first-ever South Pacific Goodwill Cruise. I was the Navigator on the USS Robison DDG-12 and was at my navigation plot station up on the bridge when I heard the screaming from below, starboard side. The difference from this video was that in our case, the tug actually tipped completely over. Odd sight. Prop still turning. Boat keel up. Tug boat crew did jump off safely. Kind of a sour note to end an otherwise great port call. Later, Inquiry Board found fault with the tug. Could have helped in our favor that we could "Neither confirm nor deny having nuclear weapons onboard." So much for the concept of warships and goodwill. Anyway, 40 years later, looks like my decision to keep a personal journal was prescient. Saludos, desde Colonia Centro Historico, Puebla, Mexico, DerRobMann sends...

That looks exactly like the incident I saw and photographed (from shore) of one of the ANZACs going out for initial trials from Williamstown. The tugs had taken the ship out, but the aft tug had not detached before the ship quickly got underway. First time I've ever seen any other footage from the incident

You guys are all full of shit. I've been working at sea for over 20 years. There is no such thing as a watertight tugboat. There is ventilation and the windows will collapse under pressure and all sorts. Grow up! The guy should have released the hook from remote pull when it started going wrong. End off!
Arabhacks
Arabhacks - 11 years ago
The reason the tug took on water is that the watertight doors were all open. The crew was not in harness. In short, a lot is very wrong here.

Blind Freddy

very ....VERY rare. The reason we investigate "accidents" is that there is fault. Often it's human error. But even if it's not, _something_ has gone wrong and we learn. To say "It's just an accident" is to sit and wait for the next time.

LeonG
LeonG - 11 years ago
The floatation device was thrown in , in case the tug motored away. There may have been miscommunication, eg the operator on the larger ship should have lowered their hydraulic bollard, to let the tug go. The water is dirty as its in the river, AND because its shallow the ship stirs up muck from the bottom. You can see this in aerial photos of ships moving through shallow waterways...

Tugboats, at least the newer ones, are being built more & more to right themselves if they become flipped over. There are "unsinkable" ones that will bob upright no matter what happens to them. I just found that pretty neat info & wanted to pass it on. What happens to this tug? It's hard to tell, I can't see any ropes or which way it was pulling. I'm not even really sure how or why the tug ended up going sideways...it looked like it was being dragged behind.

beeble2003
beeble2003 - 12 years ago
What could they do?!? Throw flotation devices. Initiate their own man overboard procedure. Launch the fast rescue boat that a ship of that size almost certainly carries. Radio a distress call. Give the details to the port authority and the coastguard. All ships have a legal duty to assist those in distress. Having said that, at the end of the video, it sounds like a bell is ringing so the ship may have already sounded its general alarm.
beeble2003
beeble2003 - 12 years ago
What else do you suggest they do when the tug's tilted at 45 degrees? Use their magnetic boots to walk up to the other side and bail out there? Wait to see if it actually sinks and then escape underwater? As you say, DUHHH.

I can assure you that tugs are seldom designed to be self-righting (though enclosed lifeboats are). Had the tow line not been cut, the tug could easily have been dragged under and sank, much like this guy was when the barge he was towing got ahead of him: watch?v=QEfUblSDzww

It was certainly somebody's fault. The tug girted because it was being dragged sideways: that situation shouldn't have been allowed to develop. It was either poor control by the tug captain or a failure of communication between the tug and the ship being towed.

@nallepuh6969 Oh yeah!.. totally agree with you on that. I was in the Coast Guard for 13 years and we were trained if something was to get out of hand, like the boat we were towing started sinking, it would be time to break out the axe. :D
kevjay777
kevjay777 - 13 years ago
@blobby1972 In fairness yes it could be called ironic as is. But 2 me an ironic event has a 3rd element. While jumping off the tug as it's 'sinking' only to surface & see it floating again was unexpected, for me in order for it to be ironic another "related, but opposite" element is necessary such as the one I described earlier. Another would be if the guy that jumped had done extensive research on the topic of capsizing ships, & teaching crewman when to abandon ship. See the ironic twist?
Tinbopaloobop
Tinbopaloobop - 13 years ago
This is known as Girding. Also pointless throwing lifebuoys off the ship to the men overboard as the tug was closer to them by at least 20 mtrs. I know what i'd rather swim for!
kevjay777
kevjay777 - 13 years ago
@blobby1972 No it's not irony - it's called bad luck. Irony would be if they jumped off the tugboat and were going to survive, but were then run over and killed by another tugboat that was coming to save them. That would be irony . . . . AND bad luck.

Why did the commander order propulsion and get underway with the tug still alongside? And why was the response to the very evidently developing situation so slow? If this is indicative of lively command and communication on US submarines, God help us.
nallepuh6969
nallepuh6969 - 13 years ago
@shakenama Eh I'd say they cut the tow, That's a common procedure for ofc it's a lesser evil to cut the line than sink the tug. When working with tugs there's always for example an axe next to the bollard the towline is brought to.
shakenama

They should be fortunate that the towline snapped. Otherwise that boat would have capsized right over them. :-/

@DjTommyKx Axe is quicker & doesn't have too many moving parts to catch on the line/cable as it parts. There are few cutting tools as fast as a scared man w/ an axe needing to cut a line or his ship sinks w/ him on it.

This is not funny. That was the newly commissioned U.S.S. Barack Hussein Obama manned by a crack crew of ex Somali pirate emigres! Another set back for socialism, such a shame.

Couldn't believe they jumped into the coming current !! For it to wash them straight back into or even under the boat, for all the deck hardware and rigging to tangle them up and drown them. They are lucky as!

As you say - it is called girding but it is entirely the fault of the pilot controlling the move and the master of the vessel utilising the tugs. This is very often fatal!!

no where near terrifying, try being on a harness and lowered off a 60 gantry in a force 6 gale 6ft out from a concrete pylon on a 250ft high oil platform with 25 ft waves comming up to meet you ... Thats terrifying...but the money is good so who gives a shit.....Only women get scared...Why??? Because they never grew a pair of balls.

More to do with the tow line not being goged down. The tow line should be passed through a gog line or winch at the stern of the tug, allowing control from either stern or towing hook. Being towed backwards by the main vessel is no problem then, at any speed, (apart from turning the trousers a bit brown) as you are never positioned beam on. The tow line was also tripped not broken at the end, another lesson, keep those tows hooks greased lads.
