A friend had this system and he hit some under water pilings next to a dock and it screwed up his boat and the props and shaft we're Fu*ked up up beyond repair. He did say that he got to close to the old dock... I have hit things with my Mercruiser duoprops and the props blades we're bent but the stern drives automatically raises to avoid any further damage. Also you can't get to close to the beach with the ips pods because you have props that suck all kinds of shiet into them ,, like ropes and nets and drift wood ..the small and insignificant increase in efficiency is not worth just one repair to props and the pod of this nature.. the Mercruiser Zeus system puts the props in the rear of the pod behind a skeg as well ... One other thing to think about......if you have the Volvo ips system please stay away from areas of Marine mammals as that system will kill them for sure it definitely should have a steel cage around those props ..

The real test is to ask those that have owned the pods for several years, and the opposite side of spectrum arnesons. Pods good for low speed maneuvering, surface drives good for top end but most folks would go back to good ole inboards with prop pockets if they get the chance because one mishap or service will way offset any efficiency savings. Plus a volvo diesel just aint my best choice of power either.

If you were to add a conical shaped housing moulded with the Lower gear case housing from the propellers to exhaust reducing in size from prop to exhaust (like an aircraft jet engine or Dyson cyclone vacuum cleaner), would it add more power/thrust/performance and also reduce emissions and required horsepower..?

I notice some of the IPS installations are canted to the outside instead of vertically. Is this by design or caused by the shape of the hull? Thanks, Steve

Unhappy about the unprotected props powering straight into all sorts of hazards: marine rubbish, trees and driftwood, rope, crab & lobster pot lines, set nets, plastics, shipping containers, divers and everything else that's bobbing around out there just waiting for a passing prop to foul. Perhaps a very substantial, forward-facing, stainless mesh housing would deflect unwanted flotsam without hindering performance. IPS - Inevitable Propeller Smash

Efficiency over safety ? Hope your joking. Anyway, the Jury is still out on how much more efficient these things are compared to a well designed shaft drive.
dave onan
dave onan - 7 years ago
You cant have it both ways. The systems are highly efficient and effective because they operate in undisturbed water. Any housing or other structure that would deflect debris to protect the drive would also disturb water flow and reduce hydrodynamic efficiency.  Agree with you 100% that these systems are inherently more vulnerable to damage from junk in the water.  Its all according to each persons priorities, I guess.

500 years of practical experience? a half of a hundred thousandth of an inch gear accuracy? Shot penning provides an additional 20% strength to the gear set? Those are all a bit of a stretch from a company that put the propellers on the wrong end.

Great new technology!! Used on cruise ships for many years now (aka: Azipods), just using gears instead of electric motors. It would have been really neat to get the pod turning radius an Azipod has. It is nice to see these on smaller boats.

Do you think its possible to built embedded system controller in side each machine to control both machine behavior and the controller a mine the man who machine drive ( the driver man) and control his actions and in case he did not make the right choose the machine take the control resp. he limit his control action by ordering machine to not response or response with a period time that the controller define.

@RAFCRI Most boats have there limits don't they!? But you will find it can deal with it just excellent!!! (I do not work for volvo Penta or claim to know their product! I am not liable nor do i represent their product, I do not hold the knowledge to have a final say or influence Volvo on other people. I stand as an opinion)
shovel20
shovel20 - 13 years ago
@RAFCRI well Take it apart and replace it. Do you go over a lot of rocks and reefs and fishing line at the front of the boat while its moving
shovel20

@ABVolvoPenta Okay hang on I thought there was hydrolic in the IPS is there some secret electronic servos your not saying ;) I think hands down Volvo have won! Other companies are trying to copy the IPS but will run into problems because they have not engineered a superior system! I'm such a dick but I have done a lot of research on this and realised that raw water intake, cooling, exhaust and mounting is just the best the IPS does it all hahahaha! I'm also a bit drunk so cheers

shovel20 - 13 years ago
Wow! Pure genius prop wash allows exhaust to escape underwater and creates further thrust under water! WOW
baggy sartape
baggy sartape - 13 years ago
Again, The underwater part of the IPS is designed to come off, normally for dangerous collisions, like running aground on high speed. not for log hitting. And even for traditional drives, when there is some sort of collision or ropes entangled, its a big pain in the ass to re-align the shaft and fix the damage. Happens a lot in asia, cuz of fishing culture and the waters are netted with fishnets.
baggy sartape
baggy sartape - 13 years ago
The damage of the logs hitting the boat, if its normal shaft drive or IPS drive, is almost the same. So its not that, if there is a log floating on the water, its likely to damage IPS system, and not the traditional drives. But for extra safety, the IPS are designed to come off if they hit a hard object, So the drives and props dont penetrate the hull. So its designed to come off upon impact. Which ofcourse has to be replaced, and that aint gonna be cheap. But still, not a bad design.

forward facing props are a pretty effective design, but what if debris such as logs hits them?

The DuoProp is just an awesome idea, maximizing the performance. Giving your boat an engine and prop design identical to those on a Soviet Bomber (TU-95)

all u did was take mercury's bravo three prop and redesigned it and with the propelers faceing forward if you hit a log or debree your prop is done MERCURY ROCKS volvo sucks

The Zuess still has the skeg to protect its props. This system puts them out in front, which is a more efficient use of the props, but leaves the props with no protection from underwater obstacles.

NO! NO! NO! You understand very weel that I don't speak about that!!!!! I hope to be in error but if happen what I'm going to say, 10000 units are dangerous, and someone is risking is life not the arm. if happen that the pod is free to turn ( the trasmission between the electric motor and the pod is broken) at the top speed the pod will go to the position of maximum turn? Someone can answer???? can volvo show some experiment about this? thanks
Volvo Penta
Volvo Penta - 15 years ago
Our steering system is not hydraulic but is electronic, so even if you break the transmission at full speed, there will be no consequences on the drivers' hands/arms (no hydraulik hard feed back to the steering wheel) and the engines will soon derate RPM to 1500, in safety mode. After more than 10.000 units sold, never had a single porblem on this issue.
RAFCRI
RAFCRI - 15 years ago
what happen when you break the trasmission to the steering at the top speed and it is free???? Ask to the inventor to try!!! if happen the same of the tug it is too dangerous!!!
