Waterway Tips #7 - Navigation Markers Change At Kirkfield
Boat 10 years ago 3,109 views
When traveling along the Trent Severn Waterway, keep in mind that Kirkfield is the apex of the system. From this highest point on the waterway, it's downstream both ways. That means that the navigation buoys and day marker colours switch, in keeping with the 'Red Right Return' navigation rule. The Trent Severn Waterway is located in Ontario, Canada. It's 240 mile/386 km long series of lakes, rivers and canals connect Lake Ontario at Trenton with Georgian Bay/Lake Huron at Port Severn and forms an integral part of America's Great Loop. Intercoastal Waterway 5.6.3
Confused! from West Cork.
'Mile Zero', or the commonly refereed to 'Start' of the TSW is on Lake Ontario, which has an elevation of 74m (+/-) above sea level. When one reaches this point of the system, at the Kirkfield lift lock, they are at the summit, or highest point of elevation on the system at approx. 256m. After that, one then drops down to the 'end' of the TSW at Georgian Bay which has an approx. elevation of 177m above sea level.
All together, one would travel through 240 miles and 43 locks to travel end to end. And all of these locks make for both an adventure as well as many varied and beautiful spots to spend some time throughout the summer #boating season :-)
Here's a video I put together last year to explain the what, where & why-fors of the system http://youtu.be/cEGrr_eLERQ
