Waterway Tips #7 - Navigation Markers Change At Kirkfield

When traveling along the Trent Severn Waterway, keep in mind that Kirkfield is the apex of the system. From this highest point on the waterway, it's downstream both ways. That means that the navigation buoys and day marker colours switch, in keeping with the 'Red Right Return' navigation rule. The Trent Severn Waterway is located in Ontario, Canada. It's 240 mile/386 km long series of lakes, rivers and canals connect Lake Ontario at Trenton with Georgian Bay/Lake Huron at Port Severn and forms an integral part of America's Great Loop. Good info and good reminder! We have a couple of Bifurcation buoys on our harbor that confuse some people as well...reds, with green stripes. Gotta love it!

+boogabooster too funny.... I thought of you and this video (and my response) yesterday, while travelling south-west from O'Donnel point, across Georgian Bay, and was going to suggest a Fairway marker session...

It's me again - I have taken my brain out now - just watched this video, (see link at end of this ),which either makes no sense, or is far too clever for me, or as I see, just duplicates (unnecessarily) the red right rule.
Please be gentle with me, it's the pills, you know!

You see Paul, to a simple Irish eejit like me, I am now confused! Over here, no matter what, when entering a harbour, red is to port & green is to starboard, end of. Are you saying that upon entering the lock from the west, the red is on the left, but if you enter from the east, the red is on the right? Does that mean then, from the lock travelling west, all red markers approaching a harbour/moorings, will be - no, I have lost it completely!! To my simple mind, the markers when leaving that lock should be red port and green s/board - entering red s'brd, green port. Thank goodness the Irish sea is all level (apart from the 15' swells!) and all approaches are red port, and therefore when leaving, it is red s/brd. You gotta love the Irish - simple but oh so friendly!
Confused! from West Cork.

+Eezee Listen Think of it this way; When entering a port, one is (in most cases) heading upstream. That said, the Trent Severn Waterway (TSW) includes a series of locks that raise or lowers traveling #boats through varying elevations.

'Mile Zero', or the commonly refereed to 'Start' of the TSW is on Lake Ontario, which has an elevation of 74m (+/-) above sea level.  When one reaches this point of the system, at the Kirkfield lift lock, they are at the summit, or highest point of elevation on the system at approx. 256m. After that, one then drops down to the 'end' of the TSW at Georgian Bay which has an approx. elevation of 177m above sea level.

All together, one would travel through 240 miles and 43 locks to travel end to end. And all of these locks make for both an adventure as well as many varied and beautiful spots to spend some time throughout the summer #boating   season :-)

Here's a video I put together last year to explain the what, where & why-fors of the system http://youtu.be/cEGrr_eLERQ

Hope it helps! Let me know . . .

Thanks Paul. That can be confusing for some boaters at that part of the water way.At the same time its epic that the hand of man can direct such a complex of water ways for our pleaser . Red right down stream.

It is awesome that we have this system to use for our leisure. It's really too bad that more folks don't know about it - but I'm doing my best to spread the word :-)
 . . . And I think you meant to say Red, Right Upstream. . . .
