DIY How to Build a Betta Barracks Rack System - Betta Fish room. Fry Growing Rack.

Today I teach you how I build this betta barracks system. It's a rack system that uses a sump to circulate the water between all the bettas slowly. I plan to build an even larger system after this one. Using rain gutters and a small pump you two could be housing 20 bettas! how long can fish be kept in this system? I kinda want to breed fish, but I don't want to affect any mental or physical growth or keep them in an unnecessarily small environment. What do you suggest?

Pretty cool system. Only problem i see is if your main tank crashes ,then all your bettas could crash at the same time too. Its definitely cool though, how often would you have to check or change main water tank.

Definitely pluses and minuses to this system, for instance all disease is shared as well. I ended up taking this system down but water wasn't too much of an issue. Small water chance once a week.

I might build build this, but a few questions. Could I use this to house guppies for a while until I give or sell them away? Could I use a longer strip so I can have longer rows? Can I use a Larger sump? Should I use a larger sump for more fish? Could I clean out the bottoms of the cups with a turkey baster or something like a betta waste remover to get out the excess food and waste?

I thought so... until I saw how they're housed in Thailand, in bajillions of glass bottles right next to each other. That's how they're raised, until they ship them over here to us. So is it realllllly necessary? Probably not. I think we just baby the hell out of our fish.

+Aquarium Co-Op Yeah - I was thinking a combination of physical and biological filters would have been the best combo. Did you put out an update on this in a newer video? I saw one where you said you weren't happy with the filtration, so you changed the setup so it did the fresh water changes automatically, and you then showed the setup where you had more than 50 cups in the one large tank. Any updates after that?

Iowa Discus
Iowa Discus - 8 years ago
I built a large betta rack awhile ago, using the same principles. Main issue I ran into was that the containers became dirty and it can be quite a chore to wipe down 60+ jars. My containers were a bit larger and semi-permanent so simply swapping them out for new ones wasn't really an option. What I like about yours is that you could probably throw away the cups and replace them once every few weeks instead of having to clean them.

Question: Lamont and you both feed live blackworms. What is your source for those? No issues with disease? I know some people are afraid to use them.
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago
No, wholesalers only sell to retail stores typically. If I could get the same nutritional profile and the fact that it wouldn't foul the tank from a freeze dried or frozen I'd use them. But I can't so I use live for a few different species. Even shrimp love the live worms.
Iowa Discus
Iowa Discus - 8 years ago
+Aquarium Co-Op Agreed, though I think one can minimize the risks with most other packaged food whereas how do you sterilize a living creature? Where would you recommend buying live blackworms from? Do your wholesalers sell to small-time hobbyists?
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago
+Iowa Discus The goal is that the containers are removable. I'm thinking I could swap the container every time I move the betta to the store or sell it at the store. Put the used container into a bucket of bleach lets says, then rinse it the next day. I'd have to see how that system works.

As to the black worms. I bring them in from wholesalers. We go through 10+ pounds every week at the store. I find that all foods have problems with disease. Even flake food spoils. Some parasites etc make it through frozen foods. Sometimes frozen foods get thawed in transit and refroze which fouls them. Even live daphnia if it's from outside has parasites etc. I think you have to weigh the benefits vs the risk. Live black worms really help put weight on fish and spawn them. You could also get some issues. But if you can spawn a fish with live black worms, or not using "safe foods" really only live black worms is accomplishing the goal.

Nice video. On the green plastic valves, any issues with durability? I had to swap them out from an air system I had years ago, they didn't seem to hold up like the metal ones. Also, what's in the sump besides water? In a fry-raising system I had, I put in a UGF plate with a few mesh bags of ammo chips and ammo carb just to keep the ammonia at zero; fry didn't like even the slightest ammonia and the full bio cycle wasn't needed due to frequent water change.
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago
+igotadose For the valves, I've been using them 10+ years in air systems. However I don't have that much time using with water so not sure on that. I think if you want to upgrade the metal valves are a nice upgrade but ups the cost by quite a bit on this project.

nice build, if i was to offer one caution it would be the standing water in the gutters positioned above and right next to a power outlet and a light switch, one leaky seal will ruin your day.

Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago
+Greg Jones (Greg's Fishroom) Yeah a leaky seal would be bad. There is no standing water since there is a slop. If you turn the pump off there is no water left in the gutter essentially.

As a quarantine system, I feel like it wouldn't work well unless you have a different rack system set up for each new shipment....since the water is recycle from all the containers..correct? Or did I miss something...I tend to drift off sometimes..lol
heatherwanderer777
heatherwanderer777 - 8 years ago
+Aquarium Co-Op yeah, that would be the only way to do it. Remove the entire batch first before the next batch comes in and you should be good to go. I bet they love it when they get to the store since you have bigger tanks there :D Even this DIY is bigger and much fresher water then you'll see in the box petstores
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago
+heatherwanderer777 Well yes, you'd move all the bettas out between shipments etc. That being said bettas are rarely ever sick. The biggest problem they suffer from is velvet which you can med them for when they come in. Really it's not different then bringing in a bag of 300 cardinal tetras. Treat them then move them out to sell them and bring in the next batch.
Bob Luckey
Bob Luckey - 8 years ago
Great vid Cory! I'm wondering if a larger drip system would suffer from unequal pressures along the drip line on each level, making it difficult to dial in each driper without changing the drips of the others. If that's the case, do you think the performance would improve if you went to a loop system like you would an airline?
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago
+Bob Luckey Yeah a loop would be better for a larger system. Typically I find it's the strength of the pump that determines if I'll have problems or not.

cool project Corey! I've never heard the proper name of that metalimat (is that how its spelled?) before. I have some in an overflow box but just never knew the actual name! What would your thoughts be on simply allowing the water to overflow over the top edge of those deli containers instead of making the drain holes?
Robert P.
Robert P. - 8 years ago
+Aquarium Co-Op well since the valves are for air lines why not hook an air to the valve run into the lids and add air holes to the lids. water and air still get circulate. May have to raise the filler pvc a bit but it would be safer i think. IMO
Just my thoughts
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago

Ah ha.  So there is a method to your madness!  I've actually never kept a betta so I had no idea.  Are you planning on adding lids to the containers you used even though the water level is a bit lower than the top?   Guess it would be simple enough considering how prevalent those containers are.

Are those cups there permanent home. If so how long do they stay there and did you breed them your self or were they imported? :)
Julian Morgan
Julian Morgan - 8 years ago
+Aquarium Co-Op Yeah on the other hand I WILL buy from a store that provides adequate space for bettas long term (beyond reasonable quarantine) and I will not give my custom to any store that keeps them too confined (less than 5 USG):

The excuse that its "just temporary before they go to their new home" ignores the fact that unless the shop keeper is prepared to spend a HUGE amount of time educating every customer who sees their betta rack/bowls/cups the impression given and the assumption made is that this is acceptable long term husbandry for the species. That falsehood is now so deeply engrained I believe that its now the responsibility of reputable fish retailers to SHOW customers how it should be done.

I've seen some very imaginative use (post quarantine) of cascading weir based racks that combine excellent generous foot print with shallow depth (bettas don't need much depth) with constant water changes and are perfect for display of aquatic plants for sale.
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago
+Attoz Correct, they're for quarantine. I am considering putting this system in my retail store also. Typically right now, bettas last up to a week in my store before going to their new home. It's a catch 22. Currently all bettas in my store live in 5 gallons or larger, basically in community tanks with other fish. But my selection is low and people want more selection. But no one can afford to put 100 bettas in 5-10 gallon tanks due to retail space prices.
