Success in the Messina Strait. Swordfish for Days!! (Sailing La Vagabonde) Ep. 114

Riley landed his first Short Billed Swordfish in the Messina Strait. Looks like we'll have enough fish to last us a good few weeks, having also maybe fed some fellow cruisers 😁🐟 Cheers to catching our fish on La Vagabonde II. Thank you to our fans Phil & Sophie for offering to donate one of their sailing shopping bags. We never ended up getting one but if you are a cruiser, you might find it useful. Hi, brilliant capture really! That fish is called Aguglia Imperiale in Messina (my home town) and in Italy also. It is not a swordfish exactly but it's related more to the white marlin. Not rare in strait of Messina. Awesome!

Maybe you should look into a set of "Spurs" rope cutters. I use them on large yachts so not sure if they make them small enough or for stern drives. They work great though.

NAVIONICS WARNING FROM Tanda Malaika WRECK:

"When they asked us what happened and we told them that our chart did not show reef, they asked us if we had been using Navionic charts, and I said yes. He then shook his head and said that at least five boats end up on those reefs a year who were using Navionic charts. They walked me over to a large map on the wall and told me to point exactly to where Tanda Malaika was, and I did to the best of my knowledge. They then pointed to two places, our spot being one of them, that all the wrecks seem to happen, then gave us the name of a man who we could call for salvage help. The word ‘salvage’ seemed so cold and final. It sounded to me like death. Had Tanda Malaika really just completed her final sail?"

Went on holiday before in a rented villa in Spain there was a old person trolley. I took it to the shops and got a hard time. On the 2 miles back in the heat was so glad, stopped getting ribbed when we seen two big body builders with skinheads and tattoos one with a trolley and the other using is suitcase on wheel to bring back the shopping. We used it the rest of the two weeks everytime, have a foold up one on the boat now.

Another great video folks, I liked the way you highlighted the rubbish in the Harbour, just out of interest how much did you remove and put in a bin?
There is a bit of a problem globally with plastic and waste in the oceans, no one seems to think of removing it, I have spoken to many people about this and the comment its not my job is a common reply.
Keep up the great Videos.

Riley,
I find that you are often going after big fish. There is something you should do research on and know.
The bigger the fish, the older the fish the more toxins in the meat. Big Tuna/Swordfish etc... are very high in Mercury; dangerously high.
Mercury is very highly toxic. In older years, it causes many ailments, headaches, senility as well as Alzheimer's etc.

Small fish of any kind have far less toxins. Go after smaller fish!

Went to Palermo this past July aboard my schools training ship, I have to say you guys described it well. Many people did not like it because it wasn't a peachy tourist stop. It appears to be a very rough place on the outside but after a few days of meeting awesome people and eating some great food, it is definitely a place worth visiting. There is a ton of culture and history which fortunately has yet to be buried under loads of tourist traps and expensive dining. Safe travels and keep exploring for us!

Why all the "I'm tired of nakedness" comments here? They live on a boat. Why wouldn't they spend as much time naked as they want? And what's wrong with some of that making into the videos? What's the big deal? They're not exploiting themselves or doing porn. They're just being natural. Relax, people.

Spot on...you are completely right. Both of these kids are absolutely beautiful. Riley can show us all the nude shots he wants. Will just increase his subscriptions. Don't listen to them Riley.....beauty fades with age, but you're always young and beautiful in timeless videos. Agree.. "the city wants to tell a story." If people get out of tourist mode and blend with the locals then everything will tell you a story and the experience will become apart of your life. Most people stay in tourist mode and become the gawker tourists who leave with their photos but never really connect with the beauty of the location.

Not to get preachy, but are you aware that was a juvenile swordfish? The mature ones are fished out, they are an endangered species for many years now. Yes they are tasty, you can tell your grandkids you had swordfish, before they were wiped out. Nothing against that, but you ought to know, get it while you can.

anybody else a little creeped out that they film themselves murdering a fish the size of a dog? I suppose I'm just the weirdo Vegan over here but that kinda seems sick (funny how he was complaining last week about dead bodies but doesn't see anything wrong with this)... Like my idea of paradise and living the good life specifically doesn't include all of that negativity...

Oh well man, you be you and I'll be me, but I hope you at least understand what I'm getting at... it's just unnecessary to do that to someone else

Well it is creepy... Most people can't handle watching slaughter house footage because they find death distasteful but it's fundamentally the same thing, killing animals

was going to say that doesnt look like sword and sword isnt that great tasting compared to many many other fish...fresh it is better than restaurant(swordfishing boats go out for month or more at a time so its 99.9% frozen...they freeze right on the boat then unfreeze for market etc so it gets tough) but still doesnt compare to lots of other fish

Much rather see Elay's bum, but still funny watching her reaction.
Riles really likes his captain's had, don't he?
As an American, it is still a bit jarring to hear Troyer's American accent in the middle of all of the Aussi going on. One day, Elayna and Riley need to do a "Talk like Troyer" segment, where they try to imitate his accent. That would be funny as hell!

Enjoy all your videos. After repeatedly commenting on the lack of fish in the Mediterranean, obviously from overfishing, I found it disappointing that you joined in the massacre of wildlife.. On another point, instead of Svalbard, have you considered taking the NorthWest Passage to the Pacific - plenty of polar bears that way too.

FlyingPooch
FlyingPooch - 6 years ago
Jim Leshaw - videographer/editor/deckhand, employee if you will. Joined them in New Zealand if memory serves, after the first girl they'd hired couldn't manage seasickness. He's gone already, though - bought a boat of his own and having a go at cruising himself, I believe is the case.
Super ballsy of R&E to hand over a certain degree of the creative reigns to someone new and allow them to put their touch to something that's already proven successful. When it works it's beautiful, and when it doesn't it can absolutely destroy a brand. Either way it takes big stones on the part of leadership to take that gamble in the first place.
