Cory I need your help man. I have a fan tail goldfish that appears to have a small ulcer or wound near his tail. What would be the best way to treat this without taking him out of the tank he is in with the other goldfish?

Second: sera.de is from germany. Do they ship worldwide? Just curious .

Aquarium Co-Op - 7 years ago
Planted aquariums can be easier to run than tanks without plants. You'll have an uphill battle with only 5 gallons of water, if you can upgrade to even a 10 gallon you'll be in a better position to succeed.

As long as you have a good filter suited to your tank size and do your water changes, you should be smooth sailing. A type of bottom feeder would help as well.

bettas are one of my favorites, i got one of my own, and my friend got one too. My brother said that if you have three females and one male they school. Is that true? i went with my friend to pick out her betta and it was at Petco, and two of them were dead, in small bowls, and all right next to eachother with no dividers. It warms my heart to see these ones so well taken care of by someone who genuinely cares about the fish.

glad to see the bettas in large aquariums, but what makes me extremely happy is you advertising that the bettas need 5gal at a minimum with good plants. I'm so sick of seeing pet stores claim the bettas can thrive in much smaller tanks, it's horrible. I'm glad you're trying to make sure these bettas have good lives.

Man I wouldn't care what people say about how you keep your fish in the different size tanks because if you go to pet smart or Walmart or any other place that sells fish they have them in small tanks too. So if people are saying stuff about how you keep up with all your fish you buy to sell to people that want fish. Just remember what I just said heck I would say that in one of your videos.

Yes, puffers don't extend their tails often. My last Mbu at 22 inches, it was a treat to see it fully out as it was huge! They use it as a rutter while swimming. So unless they are trying to swim very fast it does open up.

Why would the wholesaler be upset about tons of business??
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago
Because they aren't setup to deal with the public. For instance a lot of wholesalers only ship airport to airport. On top of that they have high minimum orders. This is all to keep the public from bogging them down. IF wholesalers wanted a ton of business they would advertise it. This would be places like imperial tropicals and goliad farms.

Caleb is correct, anubias are a water column feeder. For the plant that has sprouted, I'd say let it grow.
Caleb Lopez-Sanchez

Naicly Media Anubias nana don't need root tabs because their roots and rhizome should be above the gravel on something like driftwood. Hope this helped :)

What happened to you previous betta barrack setup in your store?
Aquarium Co-Op
Aquarium Co-Op - 8 years ago
I'm not happy with the way it performs. Grows a lot of algae, and traps duckweed in it. Also it's a lot harder to convince someone to put a betta in at least 5 gallons when you are selling it out of a container that is smaller. Still working on innovations to improve that kind of setup.

I have tried it. Corydoras eventually become accidents. They go after the clams, and as Murphy gets bigger his eyes get further apart. At the right moment a corydora moves in to eat the clam and Murphy can't see it, once they bite a corydora they spit it out cause they weren't expecting it. But I wish I could do it cause it would look amazing.

Go Murphy! Crunch, crunch, crunch ❤

Are the Easy tabs meant to be used on their own, or should they be combined with SeaChem root tabs? I have root tabs in the gravel already, but I need to pick up another bag and if they're essentially the same or don't counteract with each other, I'd rather support a small business owner.

Goblin Engineer
Goblin Engineer - 8 years ago
Depends on the dimensions on the aquarium (LxWxH) as some fish prefer more length than a "normal" x gallon tank can provide, but if I were you I'd go to seriouslyfish.com and have a look around. I like dwarf cichlids, so I would probably do a blackwater (Amazon biotope, here are a few examples http://i.imgur.com/Afl0G2E.jpg http://imgur.com/a/7VM7h ) tank with an Apistogramma Elizabethae pair as the centre piece with some dither fish like cardinal tetras. Of course everyone has their own opinions and favorite fish, so make sure to have a good look around on seriouslyfish. It provides water params, dimensions, size, feeding, sexing, breeding and ideal tank setup for a load of fish from all around the hobby.

Nope, can be done with MBU Puffers as long as they stay well fed. But if you put something with a Hairy puffer or a Congo puffer, they are dead.

Not for long. A mbu will outgrow that relatively quickly and the waste from feeding the mbu is where most people run into problems.

I can only speak to personal experience with pictus catfish getting double that size. Also if you were to google pictus catfish eating. You'd see they eat people's fish. Here is a link where others are reporting large and aggressive pictus catfish. http://www.aquaticplantcentral.com/forumapc/fish-planted-aquarium/31758-pictus-catfish-eats-everyone.html

And this is why I don't carry them in store as they would consume the rest of the tank mates with what I sell.

hey cory i want to set my 6 gallon tank what fish you suggest ?
Goblin Engineer
Goblin Engineer - 8 years ago
I'm not really sure how difficult they are, it varies a lot. If you have a more specialist fish store around you then they can order in fish easily for you. In a 6g, I'd only put 1 dwarf puffer in, even though they are cute and small they are still pretty mean and would fight a lot. But even with 1 they're still interactive enough to amuse.
Angelina Andreou
Angelina Andreou - 8 years ago
thank you so much , i already plan to make my 20gallon tank planted with endlers so no more endlers i was thinking about a betta or shrimps but i am not sure..is it difficult to find dwarf puffers? and how many to the 6 g?
Goblin Engineer
Goblin Engineer - 8 years ago
I'm not Cory but might as well throw in my 2 cents. I always think Shrimp are a great go to option. A load of color, good personalities and do well in smaller tanks. Other than Shrimp, you might like a dwarf puffer. Dwarf puffers only get an inch long, are fully freshwater and unlike pretty much every other puffer out there- they don't require hard shells to trim their beaks down. While they still enjoy eating snails- due to them being their natural food source, they do just fine eating bloodworms, brine shrimp (both of which can just be frozen food) and mosquito larvae. If you want you can of course breed some snails, like ramshorn snails. They are easy to breed, and don't require much room so you can get a load of food for the dwarf puffer. Dwarf puffers also have a very similar interaction style than other larger puffers, and do really well in planted tanks with a lot of cover. Endlers are also an option, nice little colorful fish. Here is a list of a few other options for smaller tanks (with dimensions of the tank in cm, in Length X Width, next to the size of the fish.) http://imgur.com/Mv1zqSt

Wow! Murphy's bite is so powerful the audio caught the munching. It's my 1st time seeing his teeth.
I actually like the way you showcase your bettas. Given the right tankmates a betta is actually a good community fish. I think it's cruel how others house their betta. No circulation at all..

Juan Sebastian I was thinking the same thing. Went to a a commercial pet store about a month ago and was looking for a Betta. They had only one left and he looked pale, sickly and depressed. I didn't like how he looked but bought him anyway. Within hours of being at home and in his tank he turned a reddish blue. And is very active and healthy!

Allison my beta was a rescue from Walmart, I was getting some school supplies, and I walked past the poor little guy, he had no fins and was at the bottom of the cup and he was iridescent, almost clear. And I took him home put him in my 6 gallon tank with live plants and apparently he was blue! But he's happy now and he colored up beautifully
Allison Pets
Allison Pets - 7 years ago
Bettas live together in the wild claiming as much as 3 feet of territory per male betta. They are also good community fish if introduced when young. If you think bettas are "thriving'' in a plastic cup for 3-6 months at a time in a pet store, you're dead wrong. They instantly color up with live plants and most bettas can thrive peacefully with fish that are docile in nature such as tetras, rasboras, cory cats, and bottom dwellers. The key is to keep a single male betta with mid column swimmers and bottom dwellers, since bettas spend most of their time at the top, "breathing" atmospheric air with their labrinth "gills" they don't give a shit if fish are swimming at lower levels.

Stylebreed Actually, Bettas can be fine with small fish such as tetras, or those who do not nibble on the fins of bettas. Also, bettas do need a large tank, even though they are a little lethargic, but that is because they are not strong swimmers.
Shey's Betta
Shey's Betta - 8 years ago
which is completely senseless. The bred bettas have way bigger fins than usual, which is why they don't swim much and get along way easier in a small tank. And also... they should not be kept with other fish! A good store is one which sells its bettas in small tanks (which hold only one fish each).
