Breeding Cory Catfish: A HOW TO VIDEO

This is not the only way, but this is the way I do it. In this video I am showing how to breed and raise Cory Catfish from eggs to young adults. The Corydoras that I mainly used for this video are Albino. I currently have 3 types of Cory Catfish: Three- Lined (Corydoras Trilineatus), Peppered (Corydoras Paleatus) , and Albino (Corydoras Aeneus). I keep my temperature around 78 degrees and pH around 7.0- 7.2. Thanks for watching!!! Don't forget to subscribe :) This is my suggestions on feeding since it's blurry! Feeding Suggestions and Tips Day 1-2: DO NOT FEED Day 3-7: Feed powered fry food ( I recommend Hikari First Bites) or liquid fry food ( Boiled egg yolk, however can get messy) Week 2: Feed Hikari First Bites + Baby Brine Shrimp or Decapped Brine Shrimp Week 3: Feed Hikari First Bites + Baby Brine Shrimp + Daphnia. MIX IT UP! (4 Days of First Bites and 3 days of other two foods). Week 4: Hikari First Bites + Shrimp Pellets, Baby Brine Shrimp, Blood-worms, Daphnia, and Micro-worms are a few options. MIX IT UP! Remember Frozen Live Food is fine. Continue Week 4's suggestion until fry are large enough to go into adult tank.

Breeding Aquarium Fish No, It wouldn't necessarily damage them, but it wouldn't be beneficial to them.
Breeding Aquarium Fish
Breeding Aquarium Fish - 7 years ago
That makes perfect sense, I would never put a Cory into a bare bottom tank because they like to dig (no sharp gravel/sand either) but I wouldn't think that bare bottom would actually do damage to theiur barbels?
Loveoffish1
Loveoffish1 - 7 years ago
Breeding Aquarium Fish People do it all the time even though it's not recommended. Cory's like to dig and scavenge bare bottom tanks don't allow that.

Just wondering can the fry be raised with the adults as in could you just leave the eggs there? Because I have albino Corrys in my guppy tub and a few months after I got them I saw tiny corydora fishes and I did not separate the eggs so I was wondering if it was possible to do the same in a tank with my leopard corys?
Loveoffish1
Loveoffish1 - 7 years ago
MrEverest Lee Yes. You can leave the eggs. Some will survive to adulthood. It will just be survival of the fittest. I have left eggs and have fry survive. Remember other if will try to eat the eggs or fry. That's why I separate.

Loveoffish1
Loveoffish1 - 8 years ago
+Devin Loewer I have experimented with sand and I don't use play sand alone anymore. It compacts too easily. I use a thicker grained tank which allows for better plant growth but I've never had a problem with plants growing in sand they just don't grow as fast. I also like the look of black or darker colored sand much better.
Devin Loewer
Devin Loewer - 8 years ago
+Loveoffish1  Probably was beaten up by tankmates. Did you see Cory from Aquarium Co-Op breeding Corydoras in a tank with crushed coral? Gravel is much more smooth and actually allows plants to grow. Sand kills plants and in general plants are a good thing bud.
Autocratic Snowman
Autocratic Snowman - 8 years ago
unsharp pebble gravel can work with corydoras also i have a betta with my corydoras if it's a she you probably won't have much problems but i have a male with my corydoras and he tried scaring them off in their beginning introduction and when he was making bubble nests but after all that he has remained really docile with them so don't try to interfere in the beginning hours of their introduction he will bully them a bit but they generally learn to leave corydoras alone when use to them.
Loveoffish1
Loveoffish1 - 8 years ago
+Devin Loewer Gravel destroys their barbels I have seen it personally. I brought a single Cory Catfish from the pet store because his barbels were practically gone. They grow very long in a sand tank.
Devin Loewer
Devin Loewer - 8 years ago
+Loveoffish1 They don't NEED it but it's definitely preferred if you want to see more natural behaviors.
Loveoffish1
Loveoffish1 - 8 years ago
Gravel is good for their barbels. They really need sand. Most pet stores sell sand. They have black sand.

I have some green or emerald (heard it both ways) cories and some albino cories too. At first I wasnt thrilled with them because they werent vivid colors and didnt do much. But Ive had mine for about 3-4 months now and I couldnt help but fall in love with them. Theyre so cute, and I love the way they shift through the sand. I have both groups of mine with a betta and theyre all great friends. One of my green cories swims around the top with my betta usually for around half the day before searching out some food at the bottom. Im pretty sure I have all males and 1 female green cory. Theyre a great addition to a tank and I will for sure add them to my future aquariums.

Feed them a good diet and when you see them breeding turn out the lights. You will lose some regardless, but if you remove the eggs as they are breeding you will save a good amount.

+Loveoffish1 if other school cories will eat the eggs...how to prevent it in the first place?
Loveoffish1
Loveoffish1 - 8 years ago
+axel valerian Yes they are omnivous. They will eat just about anything. It's best to give them veggie sticks as well. Beneficial Bacteria lives within your filter media, gravel, and decor. One change of 50% to get them to breed isn't going to hurt your tank. Also, I tend to dose with a little Stability to add some beneficial bacteria to the tank. You could always do 25%.
Mutlap

albino corys breed like rats, other more difficult corys need to be manipulated differently. Wild corys I just keep them for at least a year. Then turn off the heater and let the temp rise and fall with the barometric pressure. I did this with the CW10 corys i have. One day there were at least 100 eggs in the tank. I fed them well and did water changes for over a year before they laid eggs. I couldn't get them to stop, I had stop feeding them.
Mutlap
Mutlap - 8 years ago
Domesticated are much easier to breed. be sure as to which type you have. Lower the water level put in almond leaves feed very little for about one month. The leaves will make the water brown let the tank get dirty. Make a cold water change after 30 days, temp to about 65.
Feed worms the fish should spawn. Unless of course the fish are all the same sex.

So, if the female is obviously pregnant, the eggs are fertilized, right? I have them in a tank with large fish, so need to separate the pregnant ones before they lay eggs. How long do I have until she starts eating her own eggs?
Loveoffish1
Loveoffish1 - 8 years ago
+P Huster They aren't pregnant. The eggs are fertilized outside the body. She stores the sperm in her mouth that she gets from the male and spreads it on the eggs as she places them on the glass. You can separate the eggs once they are done placing them. It's much easier moving the eggs than the fish. All fish will eat the eggs within minutes. If it's at night they might leave them alone until morning.

They won't cross breed. I kept the Albino and Peppered together. I also currently keep Albino and Three lined. With that being said the Green and Albino are the same species so they can breed. There is also an Albino version of Peppered. Again typically two different species of Cory Catfish will no cross breed but I'm not saying it can't happen.

Hi..
For a 29 gallon tank, usually how many corydoras should I stock for them to school?, so far I have tried 5 cory's, but usually in my case 1 or 2 die over a period of 4 months leaving the tank with 3, Do you suggest 6 or 7 atleast? and should they come from the same tank?.. Thank you!..
Anoop Sreenath
Anoop Sreenath - 8 years ago
Yes, I give them flake, algae wafers, Wardley sinking shrimp pellets for protein, those cories that have survived so far love it, however I've never been able to find out the reason why I have a hard time keeping them alive,  balance has not been a problem, all my water parameters are normal i.e. Ammonia 0, Nitrite 0, Nitrate 15 to 20, the tank  is also heavily planted with sand substrate, many times I notice those that die next morning, were well fed and hardly showed any symptoms of dying..
Loveoffish1
Loveoffish1 - 8 years ago
7 is good. Something may be out of balance in your tank because Cories are very hardy. Are you giving them sinking food and a mixture of veggies and protein based.

very informative - especially with the mute button clicked! I'm not one of this people who gives an automatic thumbs down (and I haven't here) just because my particular taste in music is different from yours, but if you really must use music (and a calm voice over is always appreciated for the personal touch) maybe its helpful to imagine what you might choose to listen to if you were chilling out doing some tank gazing?

If that's really a pulsing pounding club mix then, OK, each to their own I guess, but I think its unlikely to be most people's first choice. My point is that your audience consists of a lot of people who aren't going to share your taste in music, and then you've diluted the impact of the otherwise top quality information you offer, which is a shame IMO. Cheers for the info anyway.
Julian Morgan

+Loveoffish1 Boring? We are talking about a video discussing how to breed and raise Corydoras. For those who want the information you don't need to be concerned about being boring, so long as your info is good and well presented, which it is - visually. The only people you are ever likely to bore are those who think tropical fish keeping itself is boring, many of whom are getting sweaty at their local club gyrating to "the beat". I'll bet the visual FX in such a club features a complete absence of Corydoras mating behaviour videos . . . now homo sapiens mating behaviour videos is a whole other thing!

Anyway, if you're concerned about viewing numbers then you check out how many tropical fish keeping related channels with over ten thousand subscribers feature dance music at all, let alone in parallel with presenting information and I think you'll see where I'm coming from. In case it isn't obvious I'm just trying to help :)

And by the way, I didn't complain about the music. In fact I don't really dislike it, I just don't think that genre belongs with this subject matter. You have a nice speaking voice on other videos I've watched and I'd have much preferred to listen to you than read. Cheers
Loveoffish1
Loveoffish1 - 9 years ago
Well no one else complained about the music and I actually like fast music on informative videos because it makes the video less boring. I don't even know the name of this song. I just liked it because it brought some excitement to the video. In many of my videos I usually just speak and it seems boring and have less views. But thank you for your tip.

Im Having My Usual problem with my Corydora's No matter what tank they are in they always are laying eggs and breeding.

At first it was my 6 X Peppered Cory (2 males) They laid eggs in the 3ft tank for 12 months almost non stop
(i was worried they would kill themselves from exhaustion :P )

Then i got 4 Albino Cory from my mum (1 Male) and 2 Bronze cory (2 males i think)

Now they are all in a 4ft Tetra Tank along with congo's, columbian's, pristella', black widow's 20+ glass shrimp and 2 X Young Algae Eaters (10cm soon moving these nasties to a solitary tank)

Light/Medium planted tank, been setup for 3 months (2 weeks ago added all cory's)
This morning i got like 80-100 eggs all over the plants and glass

Yes they do. Usually they breed more in the spring. If you want to kick start breeding, do a large water change with slightly cooler water. When I say large maybe 40%-50% percent.

Thanks for the informative video. I followed your directions and was able to tell that many of the eggs were unfertilized (the other fish in the tank snacked on them right away.) The ones that looked fertilized I scraped off and put into a little breeder box (nothing like yours!), but today am reward by seeing two little pin-head-sized-with-little-string-tails corys swimming around. I'm so excited. I am grinding some brine shrimp with mortar and pestle and hope to have small enough food for them. THANKS!

Great video!  Question if you can answer: I have 1 peppered cory and 1 green cory and this morning, looks like the peppered has an egg attached to her belly just behind the fins?  Could these two have spawned?  I'm so excited to see this, but I'm also concerned until I know for sure this is an egg and not some type of physical problem with her.  After reading up a bit and looking at some videos of females laying eggs, I do believe what I'm seeing is an egg.....any help would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks.
Loveoffish1
Loveoffish1 - 9 years ago
Hello,
Thanks! I would like to start by saying Cory Catfish are schoolers and they like to be in groups of at least. If the tank is smaller a group of 3 is good. I believe Peppered (Corydoras paleatus) can't cross with Green (Brochis splendens). Usually Cory Cats don't like to cross with other groups of Cory. Albinos will spawn with Bronze because they are the same type of Cories. It may be a female that laid eggs but the eggs wouldn't be fertile. Just make sure she doesn't have a hurt fin. Let me know how it goes. Thanks for watching.

I believe they maybe unfertilized. If you go to 3:53 in my video you can that the ones that get a white dot don't look like the others because they didn't get fertilized.  Fertilized ones usually get darker either tan or light brown depending on what kind of cories you have. Also, bronze and Albino are the same species so they will cross. You will probably end up with some albino and some bronze, which is cool. It usually takes 3-5 days for them to hatch so just wait and see if they hatch. If  they don't hatch this time cories love to spawn.
Richard Mason
Richard Mason - 9 years ago
They are all like that :(
Have 3 jumbo bronze and 3 jumbo albino, going add add 3 jumbo with a nice pattern.
Loveoffish1
Loveoffish1 - 9 years ago
I believe white dot in the middle mean unfertilized. Are all of them that way? What kind of Cories do you have? Usually you see clear dot on the inside and white around it which is the fish forming.  Is it possible you can email me a picture. You can email me at loveoffish991@gmail. com

Loveoffish1 - 9 years ago
I get my sand from Lowes, if you are in the States. It's called Play Sand .You get 50 pounds of sand for around $5 dollars. Pool Filter Sand also works. Some people prefer Pool Filter over Play because you don't have to wash it as much and it doesn't compact as easily, but of course it cost more. If you use sand be sure to wash it very good until the water turns clear or else your tank will be brown.

i have decided, coreys can get very spoilt!
new additions to my tank and you can tell who the older ones are!
meanwhile the new additions swim around the tank cleaning up any algae they may see... the older ones dont move a muscle...

+Babby Babbyson

turtle? you mean terripin? (if it swims) i have a smaller tank than 50gal (but would love one filled with coreys)  and was given a few coreys who were getting older i guess, decidedto research coreys fully and add a few more as their not solitary fish, damn those young ones clean the tank better than i can (and im through)
Meme Machine
Meme Machine - 9 years ago
+Mattfuzzy It doesn't matter new or old for me, I put them into my big 50 gallon and they seem overwhelmed, they swim around at first, find a nice spot covered in algae or food the fish haven't got to yet, and sit there munching the same spot.
This would be useful if my turtle didn't mistake them for a sunken piece of cuttlebone.
Loveoffish1
Loveoffish1 - 9 years ago
It's 100% like that. The older ones get very lazy.

When should i move them from the breeding box to a little larger aquarium where they can grow large enough for the regular tank
Loveoffish1
Loveoffish1 - 9 years ago
I usually wait until they are at least 3/4 to 1 inch before moving. I usually start them off in a 10 gallon. Surprisingly I thought some 1/3 of inch ones were big enough to go in with Swordtail Fry, they killed them all.

What filter do you use in your 20 gallon I have a eheim 2215 and a 20 gallon sponge filter with the output turned down a bit. I also breed my cories in a 10 gallon. Just put the eggs in from the 55.
Loveoffish1
Loveoffish1 - 9 years ago
In my 20s I use a 30 sponge filter and a Whisper for a 30-60 gallon. In some cases I may use a corner filter rate for a 40 gallon.

Can I breed my Panda's while there are other fishes in the tank? It's a community tank with Neon Tetras, Cherry Barbs, and a Pearl Gourami.

Loveoffish1 - 9 years ago
Cherry Barbs with most likely eat any eggs laid unless u remove them.
kataratify
kataratify - 10 years ago
They might breed but if you don't remove the eggs they'll probably get eaten by the other fish....I just had my albino's spawn again and I have them in a community tank with danios, gold barbs, platys and a few other fish...one of the platy females started going after the eggs right away so I was quick to remove them after they were hatched.  They are now set up in a separate tank...

Great Video…

Can you recommend what type of sand to buy? I want to get sand that is low ph or does not effect ph and sand that is safe/good for Cory Catfish… I Love my little guys! I heard some sand is sharp and can hurt them and I also learned sand from the beach areas raises ph…

I am in California if that helps…

What kind of sand do you recommend and where do I buy it?

I am open to buying online or fish stores, but if possible I would love to buy in
bulk from rock or sand stores or Home depot, or something like that, that sells 20 to 40 pound bags, etc.…

Thank you very much…

Great Video too!

I might raise baby cory's soon…

Thanks for posting!

Thanks for watching.

I use Play Sand in all my tanks that you can get just about anywhere. Most likely a Lowes or Home Depot. It's really cheap around $4.00- 5.00 for a 50 pound bag. You just have to make sure you wash it really good or it will make your tank dirty. You also can use Pool Filter Sand, the grains are a little larger than the Play Sand, but it still is okay to use. It also doesn't compact and need to be stirred as much as Play Sand. It costs about $10.00 for 50 pounds. You have to wash that really good as well.

When washing you just keep rising until the water goes clear. It won't alter any of your parameters, like most of the aquarium sands. Both are also nontoxic to fish and are great for Cory Catfish. It really up to you which one you choose.

Never use sand from beaches it has too many toxins and unknown organism. Most aquarium sands are expensive and don't come in bulks. You can choose either of the two I mentioned for great prices. Most people will recommend Pool Filter Sand. I like the Play Sand though, they are almost exactly the same. Just a difference in grain size. Also, my plants grow fine in these sands.
