Great new logo! I like the fact that you went with a bigger filter for the tank. I over filtrate all my tanks, can never go wrong with more filtration than recommended.

you dont need a "jump starter" unless you are setting up only one aquarium or unless the aquariums have parasites ( NOT dissing your aquariums). just use old water and media.

Yes, I agree with you. I just like to do it to be extra safe and make sure there is as much bacteria in the tank as possible. Thank you for watching! :)

Hey Flynn, I enjoyed the video and the new logo looks great. All of my tanks have pool filter sand as the substrate, low/medium light, no CO2, and get weekly doses of EasyGreen. I would recommend trying Hygrophila corymbosa 'angustifolia' (Willow Hygro). It grows very well for me in sand with light doses of liquid fertilizer.

Hey Flynn - great video and congrats on the new logo - very cool!

For sure you can go with water column feeders like anubias and java fern like Cory suggests, but you know you can grow a lot of different plants in a sand substrate, they just need some root tabs if they're heavy root feeders and it never hurts to dose the water column as well.

I think its a bit of a myth that plants are EITHER root feeders or water column feeders - even those with well developed roots don't always take that much nutrition from their roots! So why grow roots you ask? Well some plants just use their roots to keep them planted in strong currents. Anyway the reverse is also true because if you can get nice long roots (not the rhizome!) on your anubias or java fern and shove them into the substrate, they'll take up nutrients from there too! What I'm saying is that most plants aren't 100% one or the other but a bit of both, some 50-50 some 70-30. Either way fresh sand has no goodness in it at all, unless you add it with root tabs, or let the fish do their business in there for a few weeks :)

I currently have a sand substrate on my corydoras grow out tank and I have micro swords and dwarf sagittarius growing pretty well. Even an Amazon swords will do fine - with root tabs or the ice cube trick if you know that?. Another thing that works well for me is to choose plants that send out runners and grow them in one of your other tanks, then when they send out "babies" you can snip those off and transplant them to your cory tank. That way if some of them don't take its no big deal.

great videos - keep em coming!

P.S. I'm going to get my daughter to watch your videos - she's always chickening out of helping me with the water changes and cleaning filters. I hope you'll inspire her to get her sleeves wet!

Thank you Michael! No, those were not the plants I kept in the tank. I did do some research and did read about certain plants needing aged water. The employee at my LFS said these plants were very tolerant of water quality, so my best guess would be the substrate.

Great video Flynn ... !!! how about some Anubias? Will you be keeping the tannin? Giving your new cat fish the best home possible! BTW what sand did you use, you mentioned you bought it at your LFS but can you confirm what you got? I want to add some Corys to a new 29G planted and I am worried about their soft belly!
Flynn's Fish Forum
Flynn's Fish Forum - 5 years ago
I am debating keeping the tannin. It helped lower Ph, but now I can barely see the back of the tank when looking through the front! I'll probably get some charcoal in an HOB for awhile and do some water changes to start removing the tannins. The sand I used was the National Geographic brand sand.

Hi Flynn! I just found your channel, after Cory from Aquarium Co-op mentioned you in his live show earlier tonight. I've really enjoyed your videos that I've watched so far, I've subscribed & will be checking out more of them. I'm just starting back into fish-keeping after 20-25 years or so? So, I'm a total "beginner" all over again! Your videos are very helpful - thank you! Good luck with the corydoras - those are my favorite fish, along with plecos! Congrats on the new logo - it looks fantastic & very professional!!

Well done, Flynn! Great video and setup montage. Love the logo and your shirt is awesome I just got mine recently! By the way you can get some Anubias and tie them on to the driftwood. You can also break up some marimo moss balls and glue them to the top of your flowerpots for some greenery. Can't wait to see those sterbai rooting around in there!
