How do you maintain your discus so healthy?? My water levels are all good and I do water changes every other day and my discus have black spotting on them plus my plants aren’t flourishing like yours... I reduced the amount of time the light is on since I was told that that itself was killing the plants, I started giving them excel, potassium and iron and still my plants are good for a while and then they start dying off... I don’t know what else to do! Any ideas?

How big are your daily water changes?

j03yYunG Aquariums oh and live plants I have plenty. But they too are doing so so. They’re good and growing for a while and then suddenly they start dying off.

If the Discus is skinny, that could mean it has internal parasites. Try de-worming them. To reduce nitrates, either do water changes or have plants in the tank. You may want to test your tap water to make sure its not coming out high from the source. If it is, your only option would be RO/DI

j03yYunG Aquariums my discus didn’t die just the plants but my discus now seen to be getting sick... slimy looking and white spots on their eyes.. I think it might be my nitrates that are high but how else do I lower that?

Black spots on Discus is normal for Pigeon strains. Were they skinny when they died?

hi , you can tell me the name of the oder red discu , i know 1 of the discus is a san merah but the other??? thanks
j03yYunG Aquariums
j03yYunG Aquariums - 7 years ago
One of this is San Merah, the other was a Red Valentine or Fuji Red from Kenny's Discus. http://forum.simplydiscus.com/showthread.php?128966-PREVIEW-JUNE-2017-Forrest-shipment-(Price-list-included)

j03yYunG Aquariums - 8 years ago
+Braiden Saville I haven't seen any issues with my tiger barbs and Discus. Again its taking a chance since each fish has different personality.

Hi Joey, I'm a new follower of your channel, the discus are gorgous! Is that the Hai Khoon show quality albino leopard?
Teng Xue
Teng Xue - 9 years ago
+j03yYunG Aquariums That's true... I feel like Kenny has more albino strains two years ago than now somehow
j03yYunG Aquariums
j03yYunG Aquariums - 9 years ago
+Teng Xue lol, yeah I've been waiting for more Hai Khoon Discus from Kenny, but he hasn't had any since 2 years ago. Yes this one was expensive since it was only a 3" Discus priced as a 5"+ Discus because it's a potential show quality. O_O

The discus are so bright! They look like they were painted!
I've been wanting to keep discus for awhile but I just don't want to make that commitment.

Your group is absolutely gorgeous. The pleco is pretty neat too.

What I love about getting new fish is that you can really see how big your original fish have gotten lol. The blue diamond is my favorite type of discus. Those roseline sharks or Denison barbs/torpedo barbs are huge and look pretty thick lol Must be nice to have that many big ones. I have 6 of them and my 2 big ones are about 5 or 5.5 inches while the others are still small but growing fast

Love seeing updates on this big boy tank. Your discus are really beautiful. Like all the different sizes you have, but can't wait to see them all be beastly in the future. Hope all the plants do well. :)

very nice. ive read that growing out discus is difficult. that they require 5 feedings a day with daily water changes. is there a threshold that once they reach a certain size you can cut back on feedings and water changes?
j03yYunG Aquariums
j03yYunG Aquariums - 9 years ago
+Dave Bandish Actually maintenance isnt too bad. As for cost, it really depends on the size you buy them at. 3-4" is around ~$40-80, 4-5" ~$80-120 and 5"+ ~$120+ (all depends on the species). So getting a few 3" ones isn't to terrible in pricing.
Daves Rift
Daves Rift - 9 years ago
i see. ive considered keeping them in the past, but I wasn't up for that degree of maintenance trying to grow them out. and to buy quality discus like yours would be outlandishly expensive. ive seen them for 150-200 a piece!
j03yYunG Aquariums
j03yYunG Aquariums - 9 years ago
+Dave Bandish Hey Dave, let me correct some myths. It really comes down to what you want the Discus to look like. If you want a monster 6-8" / high quality / show Discus, then you'll need to feed them a lot which means more water changes. If you're okay with a 5-6" size, then cutting back on the feeding which means less water change is okay. This goes with any fish really. If you look at all the show quality Discus, its bare bottom, lots of feeding and water changes to get the water clean. As for me, I'm okay with a 5-6 incher. I feed them 2-3 times a day with a weekly 50% water change.

agreed on the diamonds. The red one you were speaking g of that has the white trim in its fin. I was not able to pick up the blue in the fins BUT the face has a pearl to it that is insane.
