These 3D backgrounds look stunning only when they are brand new.
I had a 3D background years ago, it looked great the first month. Three months later it was covered with ugly algae everywhere. It was impossible to remove the algae. The 3D background occupied a lot of space in the tank. 4 months later I trashed the background. Be Aware: These 3D backgrounds are algae magnets.

Now your 2K gallon has that "musculine" natural look to it, as compared to the previous malayan driftwood. As such, be careful when adding more plants which may soften the hardscape (especially if the plants eventually overtook the background) and turned out to be aquarium-like instead of wild river effect. However, I visualised it to be awesome with some littering of dried ketapang leaves, for it to look as close as the wild amazon river as possible.

My Plant suggestions. I know this is one of a million comments. But I hope you have time to have a look at it and think about it.
1) Anubias Coffeefolia. (biggest of anubias I have ever kept. Tie 'em close to the main tree)
2)Echinodorus cordifolius 'Fluitans' (You are gonna love this.. Fast and large growing, but you need some gravel/ sand to fix it to the ground)
3) Vallisneria americana 'Gigantea'
4)Aponogeton boivinianus (can grow more than 2 ft tall and is easy to grow. )
5) Java fern Trident

I love it, it is so awesome, that is without a doubt the coolest 3D Background ever.

My only concern is:
The Arowana are big fish, would they not knock the pieces of logs that are not glued in place? And what if the piece that fills in that void ends up being knocked out of place the Arowana may still end up behind and if they die back there you would not see them, then how would you be able to take them out without having to rip of the awesome background?

The idea of the jungle Vallisneria is great, yet if I think of any other types you could use I will be sure to tell you.
Anyway, that was a cool video, and I really cannot fault anything, well done Joey. And thank you for sharing. I enjoyed watching that. :)

Rays doesnt need a flat surface. In the wild there are alot of roots and branches on the bottom too...the old scape took more space. My story is nothing special, just depression because I lived alone since I was 17 and a common divorce story and possessive parents. I don't know what would have happened if I didn't have my goldfish, I have them in front of my bed and they make my happy. I don't know what would have happened to me if I didn't have my goldfish, I could have gotten addicted to drugs like my friends.

Its sort of a shame that you used white pond shield on the tank.. I think that Dark gray or even black would have looked so much better with that background..
Tanked With Aussie

Have you thought of the onion plant - thats meant to be easy to grow and great for deep tanks - or do some lillies (lotus) in there, good for goldfish/koi ponds, so should handle the larger fish well... Just stick with tropical species and you should be fine.

Anubias gigantea may also be a good choice, maybe also some amazon swords - with root tabs? Maybe some of the larger crypts (balansae?) and some aponogeton?

I think that the background takes up too much space. There is not very much bottom area for the rays particularly when they are adult. Granted I would say that the tank with nothing obstructing the bottom would be barley adequate for that number of rays.
D. Michaud
D. Michaud - 6 years ago
I agree about the floor space also I don't like how little sand there is because when the Rays move it around and you can see the bottom of the tank and that the roots go no where it takes away from the realness of it all .

Dave Crichton - 6 years ago
If you have natural wood in the tank, this will be tannin which is discoloring the water. Completely harmless to the fish but.....perhaps unsightly. The tannin will "eventually" get filtered out of the water but water changes will hasten the process. Fish actually like the cloudier water in my opinion.

Jungle Val is a good idea, i use that in the back of my cichlid tank, however i think the Spiraling Crypt would be better in the tank you've got. You can also wrap java fern plant and root onto decor. I currently have two thriving Java Fern plants wrapped to decor, they look amazing.

Need help ! :)
So I'm upgrading my Tanganyika 50gal tank to a 75gal tank, but gonna use the same stand ( home made and made for a 75 couple months ago because I knew I was gonna upgrade soon ) what would you guys do ? Is keeping the max amount of old tank water and same rock, filter, substrate gonna be ok to just put them right after ? Because I can't keep them for ever in the small 30gal tote that they're gonna be during the switch ( or can I ? )
Thanks alot !

Maxime Carrière as long as you are using the same filter and some contents it shouldn't be an issue to immediately swap tanks, just do a water change or 2 the first few days to guarantee no issues

Wow! The new background gave the feeling of living in the middle of the Amazon forest. Very nourishing for the soul. Can't wait for the next update.

Please look into getting some Marimo Moss balls - they're cheap, virtually indestructible (easy to take care of,) can move around the aquarium floor, and fish tend to love them. They're also good at controlling nitrates as with all plants, but the main reason is they're just such an aesthetically pleasing thing to have in a tank. It's fun to watch fish play with them :)
In regards to other plants, perhaps some Anubis? Slow growing but hardy, and as you know they look nice too :)

I still don't get how you will filter the water in the aquarium properly.  You explain the splitter has the water delivered behind the scape material,,, the water is also being sucked in behind the scape material. In effect it sounds like you are just filtering water behind it.  You silicone the material in place but even if water somehow (including the drilled hole) gets in behind the material it just does not seem like that is enough to circulate the water properly to really clean it?
Bexley75
Bexley75 - 6 years ago
The main outlet was at the front so most water is going into the tank, the second outlet behind the scape is a good idea moving the water will prevent anaerobic conditions behind the scape...

Put in some Lily pads or some type of floating vegetation.
Jasmine Collins
Jasmine Collins - 6 years ago
Lilies all have roots that anchor them to the soil, so they probably wouldn't be able to survive as the fish would immediately uproot them. Hyacinth is pretty, but kinda rots indoors and doesn't last forever. Smaller floating plants would probably just form debris that would clog up the filtration and interfere with visibility in such a large space.

Looks great. I would have preferred actual hardscape. But, on such a large aquarium, it might take a long time to source them. So, creating one using Aqua Decor artistic skills might be the next best option. The only thing missing are some greens. I was thinking placing mosses around the smaller, skinnier pieces of driftwood and some on the trunks and root system. For plants, not sure, maybe, anubias? Not sure about val though. The scape doesn't seem to speak Val to me. Just my 2 cents.

Also you can cover the input in the tree with one of those standing logs and then u won't see it and it looks natural. You can use super glue or hot glue so u don't have to wait 48 hours for the cure.

Russell Freeman
Russell Freeman - 6 years ago
The background looks great! I'm sure he has thought about the lost space for the rays. He has a lot of experience with them. Speaking strictly from an aesthetic point of view, if planning on keeping the background, It would look a lot better if all of the white was changed to something of a brown textured color. We know the rays move the substrate away from walls, and the angled piece with the wavemakers, along with the walls not covered by the décor, will always show white. Perhaps he's already thought it through and is just demonstrating the background since he got it for free, with plans to change it in the near future. If it was a permanent thing, I definitely would have changed the color of the walls and floor.
Chicago Rc
Chicago Rc - 6 years ago
So how many gallons of room did you lose adding all that into the tank? If it's a ray tank why do all that to it and make their space smaller? Their room to grow is more important then looks imo.

Are you worried the stingrays won't have enough space to swim around in? There's not that much in the way of the sandy substrate, and they can't really get under your background.
Cody McInnis
Cody McInnis - 6 years ago
Yeah, I didn't want people to think I was trying to throw shade or anything. I was just considering the footprint of the original setup and the rays had much more room to swim and hide. If they're cool with gliding over the tree roots that's cool too, but they're gonna be cramped if they decide to stick to the sandy portion. Maybe he'll do some deeper sand so they can at least bury themselves?

Black ABS plumbing is unsafe for aquariums. Its not drinking water safe. That is the reason its used only for drains in home construction. Abs WILL leach toxins into the water.
Cade
Cade - 6 years ago
That's probably true for smaller aquariums but wouldn't the amount of water in the tank and the large amounts of water changes dilute the toxins.

Aquatic plant called Onion plant;
Crinum thaianum is an excellent plant for the aquarium. Crinum thaianum, more commonly know as onion plant, grows in rivers and streams in Southeast Asia. The large bulb on Crinum thaianum helps it to store energy through the dry spells. Crinum thaianum is best used in the mid or background areas of the aquarium. Large white flowers adorn Crinum thaianum when it is low water or emmersed. Crinum thaianum is a great aquarium plant for beginners because of its ability to live in a variety of different conditions.

It looks amazing. Can hardly wait to see it filled and planted.

I would put a couple of the vertical logs in the middle to increase swim space for the rays. If 1 was placed between the roots and you planted the base, then the plants could climb up the branch. It would look amazing.

Thekidletsplays
Thekidletsplays - 6 years ago
It does not provide more space, that’s absurd. The rays spend their time on the bottom and this scape takes up three quarters of the bottom. Doesn’t matter, he will be pulling it apart in a month to do something else with it. Tiresome.

I have 2 more plants which U can plant on the back :P It's Hygrophila angustifolia, It can grow up to 1.5 m. And there is 1 more Hygrophila which can be there: Hygrophila carymbosa :P In fact, I belive that Hygrophila angustifolia is better choice cuz it needs less light and fertilization isn't needed . I had some troubles with carymbosa (It needs K+ to grow better).

I would suggest planting a large sword plant and definitely some different varieties of lilies . A tiger lily would be nice . Also attach some moss and / or crypts to that black pvc out put pipe to hide it as well as stick some in cracks and crevices .
