Hi! I was wondering if you could give me some advice. I have a 25 gallon tank, heater but no filter since I do water changes every 3-4 days. Only fish in there is a pleco and I’m thinking of moving my betta in there. My question is, what types of plants can I put in there? Or do all plants require a filter to be part of the aquarium for them to survive?

If there are no plants and /or filter in the tank it can’t be cycled. The filter holds the bacteria needed to cycle a tank. Personally I think all tanks need a filter, it’s the best way to balance a tank and have the good bacteria needed to remove toxins from the water. When you add plants I would also add a filter.

I’ve had the tank set up and cycled but with out a filter. Do you think I would need a filter if I start to add plants?

You can use many aquarium plants as long as you have a light on the aquarium. If you have no filter you really need to be doing 50-60% water changes every 2-3 days. If you add a lot of plants they will help removing the nitrates from the water but only after the tank has been established for at least 3-4 months. You will still need to water changes several times a week.

Lifewithpets Yeah I just learned that a male and female can’t be in the same tank divided. I feel absolutely terrible about it. They are currently both in their separate 3 gallon tanks. Thank you so much for the advice. I really appreciate it, and I watch almost all your videos so I can do the best for my betas. Also I just placed my order for 2 10 gallon tank dividers with holes. Can’t wait to receive them!!

Keeping them in a divided tank together is not a good idea. The hormones they release will cause stress overtime. She should automatically reabsorb the eggs.

The API Test kits are very good! I suggest ordering one off of the internet because they are typically cheaper :)

I have Three dwarf puffers and I have them in with rosy reds, angel, neons, guppies in a 40 gallon breeder tank with live plants. It works for me but might not be ok for everyone.
