Today I take you behind the scenes on what we did to scape the discus aquarium. We travel to hardware stores, and local aquarium fish stores. While there, I do tours of the fish stores and show you all of the scaping supplies we consider. Finally we head back to the discus shop to start the scape on the aquarium and get it ready for the main event.

Hey, until recently i have a pair of discus that had been mating quite a lot of times but always failed(i know the reason and i was planning to buy another aquarium later). So a few days ago i found out that one of the discus had died(i think it's the female). I'm wondering if the other discus that is still alive could and would mate again with a new discus?

+Badraven1169 wasn't for sale. It was the store pet. These guys go for about $100 per inch of shell though. I suspect based on that alone, it's easily worth $1500. Given its size and perfect condition, he could easily get twice that to a serious collector. Again though, it's not for sale.

Aquarium City is pretty far from where I live, but I still manage to get by there about once every three months. The other fish store you went to is one I've never been to, but I'll have to check it out next time I'm over that way. It was fun seeing familiar places in a King of DIY video. I was home sick and unable to go to the live event, but I still appreciate the videos in So Cal.

Nice looking background. But I am not that much of a fan for the intake in the back. I have the fluval 406 in a 35 gallon african cichlid. It is pretty much a bare bottom aquarium. And the suctioning is not that strong enough to get the poop out of the view fast enough. It will get to it, but no as fast as other type of filtration. I clean the filter regularly.

I have a major issue! I got a new aquarium and but my fish in it and once they hit contact with the water they instantly died. The water had the conditioner in it but I don't know what happened.

For a beta I would recommend a 5-10 gallon tank with a few decorations (nothing sharp it will tear their fins). Natural looking tanks tend to look the best and decorations will keep the beta occupied and give it a place to rest.
Most important points:
-Get a 5-10 gallon tank
-only get one beta
-research cycling process in fish tanks
-add a few decorations
-don't have sharp decorations

Petco sells their own sand, black and white. I found it on sale for $11 for 20lb, usually it cost about $18.

Hmm, Maybe you have it bare bottom but spray paint it black from under on the outside? That way it is cheap af, and really easy to clean. it can also have a glossy contrast and is something unique.

Yes! Although not black, i recommend pool filter sand. It is very cheap and easy to get. If you wanted it black, there are pool filter sands that are black but tend to be a little harder to find. I recommend white sand however because it reflects the light to make your fish look better.

Rock landscaping shops like that are the best. My dad and I ended up with Purple Lasal granite and white quartz pieces for our tanks from a local place. They called them samples and gave them to us for free. The white quartz looks amazing in my tank, especially with the bit of algae its got going on.

Hey Joey. I'm building a small tank (31" long, 9" wide and 9" tall. Comes to around 10 gallons). I will be using 5mm glass (about 3/16). No trim around the tank, but I'm able to put it a 7" brace in the middle. Do you think that alone would hold, or should I also include a brace on the edges?

I did not want to euro brace it because I was planning on building an in-tank filter system, like it was done in Joey's office aquarium and his little planted tank. I had a few sponges and small pumps lying around so I figured I'd use them. and with euro brace, since this tank is only 9" tall, it would be tough to work with the filter system if I needed to do any maintenance

Ah, I used to go to the store with the pignose turtle when I was a kid. They've changed it a lot! It looks a lot less cramped now. They used to have 2 free roaming iguanas, but then there was a bad fire. One of the iguanas made it, lived in a nice big enclosure in the window where the koi tank is now.

It's funny how some items are seasonal, you won't be able to find pool sand in late fall/winter time. I had to order mine from eBay. I searched everywhere in late fall with no luck. What is the smallest tank size for 6 discus as a nice display (not breeding) in your opinion?

Thanks, one more questions, I know they need frequent water change. For how long adult discus can go without wc on special occasion?

+magic_23 20 gallons for the first fish, 10 gallons for every discus after that. So for 6 adults, you would want a 75 gal. You can grow them out in smaller tanks though and progressively get bigger.

Billybobjoesmit bluegill are good, but you should probably catch them when they are babies in a minnow trap or net because if you catch an adult it will not adjust well to living in an aquarium.
