240 Gallon Discus Tank - Automatic Water Changes

In this video, I go over my automatic water changing system in my 240 gallon planted discus tank. Automatic water changes can be relatively simple with a pump and timer. It frees up time and avoids a messy cleanup. Do you have a good sponge filter or a hang on back (HOB) filter. The filter should help catch the white particles from your substrate. Otherwise time and a few more water changes will clear it up. Thanks!

Beautiful tank. Did u pressurize CO2 in ur tank for plant ?
PlantedDiscusFishTank
PlantedDiscusFishTank - 7 years ago
The 240 gallon and the 75 gallon "spider" tanks do not use any CO2. Most of the plants I have in there are slow growing or emersed and so CO2 doesn't provide much benefit.
Thanks!

Amazing work
How to keep it without algae?
PlantedDiscusFishTank
PlantedDiscusFishTank - 7 years ago
What kind of algae are on the plant leaves? If it is black beard or hair algae, the Siamese Algae Eaters will remove it. Brown algae, otos and plecos will remove it. If it is the green spotted algae, it is harder to remove, you will need to use a hyrdogen peroxide (H2O2)....drop the water level in the tank, and use a spray bottle to apply the hydrogen peroxide. The typical hydrogen peroxide sold in grocery stores is only a 3% solution, so that it will be safe to apply in your tank...it dissociates into hydrogen and oxygen gas within a few minutes after you apply it.
The algae should turn brown or purple and you can rub it off in a day or so.
Tham Dar
Tham Dar - 7 years ago
Thank
I will try to make a balance by these fish :-)
But I have a problem growing algae on plant leaves
PlantedDiscusFishTank
PlantedDiscusFishTank - 7 years ago
Thanks! I do get algae, but the otocinclus catfish, the plecos, and the siamese algae eaters keep them at a minimum. I still scrape the algae off the glass with the magnet cleaner about once a month.

Can I ask why you don't use a constant drip system with gravity drain from the sump? I would think it could eliminate all the timers and float switches. Amazing tank by the way.
PlantedDiscusFishTank
PlantedDiscusFishTank - 7 years ago
ok nice...is the chloramine filter an RO system?
Matthew McGhee
Matthew McGhee - 7 years ago
Cool. I think we are talking about two different systems. I'm currently installing a system that taps directly off the water main, runs through a chloramine filter and then drips 40GPD into the sump. The sump has a bulkhead drain that is constantly draining once the desired water level is reached. I didn't think about the vacuum maintenance. That would require a pump of some sort. Good point.
PlantedDiscusFishTank
PlantedDiscusFishTank - 7 years ago
Matthew McGhee
I think the siphon drip system is great for smaller tanks, but for the 240, I need a stronger flowrate. For example, when I do vacuum maintenace, I drain up to a quarter of the tank...it would take a while to fill it back without the pump. Also the siphon drip system on my smaller tanks often get air bubbles trapped in the hose, stopping flow. With the pump and timer, I don't have to worry about the siphon stopping due to air bubbles...this has been working great for me but I understand the cost effectiveness of a gravity/siphon drip system. Thanks for the comment!

What's the purpose of storing water first in the 50 gal tote? Why not add water directly to the drum with the pump and timer? Thanks
PlantedDiscusFishTank
PlantedDiscusFishTank - 7 years ago
The primary purpose for the 50 gallon tote is to store water high above all other tanks like a water tower, so it can feed the lower tanks via a drip system. It was easier to hook the drum to the tote, rather than making another connection to the main water pipes.
Thanks for the comment!

I'm an Architect, so I have been designing mine for a while, lots of sketches, research and details etc. I have done the structural upgrades for the tanks to the room and now I am designing and redesigning the filtration room and I can't decide on the custom tank sizes. I would like to breed discus, but also propagate plants for my display tanks - you are right lots of planning and the details are very important. I must have auto water changes to be sustainable. But I am not there yet.
PlantedDiscusFishTank
PlantedDiscusFishTank - 7 years ago
Hi Cindy, Yes I'm working on a fishroom tour...I'll be sure to describe the setup and equipment. I think organizing and planning is important in starting a fishroom. I measure the room, figure out how many tanks I can fit...make sketches....lots of how to's online for racks and plumbing. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Awesome thanks for putting up the video! do you ever do a regular water change to take out more old water and put in New water or you think this is enough? Also would like to see a a little tour of your fish room!
PlantedDiscusFishTank
PlantedDiscusFishTank - 7 years ago
Hi Knucklez, I usually do an extra water change when I disturb the soil or when I do my monthly maintenance. As you can tell, my tank is understocked, so that I don't have to change too much of the water, but I will adjust the pump timer longer to do a larger water change if I add more fish. I will do a fish room tour soon. Did you ever get your wattley discus into your big tank?
