28. Tips on How To Acclimate Discus to reduce Stress

Please watch: "Discussing the pros and cons of Feeder Fish" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vhVtY9QWthQ -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Here are a few tips that would help you acclimate your new Discus to your tank, with as little stress on the fish as possible. Stress on Discus is the leading cause of drops in the fish's immune system and leads to diseases such as Ich (White Spot) and Internal/External Parasites. Follow the tips below and it should help reduce the instances of stress on your Discus. Tips: 1. Let the bag rest in the desired tank for 45 minutes to get the temperature acclimated to the new tank. 2. Slowly add tank water into the bag, to get the fish to adjust to the new water chemistry and temperature. 3. Leave high tank lights off while acclimating, to reduce stress on your fish. 4. Add stress coat to the water to aid in destressing new arrivals (Optional) 5. Always remember to use a net, or if you prefer to use your hands, ensure they are extremely clean by rinsing. DO NOT USE SOAP! 6. Always quarantine new fish for 2-3 weeks after purchasing, to ensure they are not carriers of parasites. I hope I provided some insight and info, Happy fishkeeping, and please remember to subscribe to The International Aquatic Alliance (IAA) for more Fish Keeping Tips. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPRTJ3m6F9nBLa6hscsZKEQ

My first attempt to keep discus did not go so well so after that I decided to take a break from the hobby I know from keeping fish over the years that everything don’t work for everyone thanks for all the info great video

my tank at 78 - 79° is that too cold for discus or do you think that they would be alright in that temp
Maurice Aquariums
Maurice Aquariums - 7 years ago
+speeddemons004 I think they'll be OK at that temp. Mines did just fine, they'll breed at 80F but any corydoras will die. Talking from experience.

When getting rid of ich (happened to me 3 times) I add a tiny bit of medication and then raise the temp and feed them fish food mixed with some garlic and it works a treat.

+Maurice Aquariums thanks, my great uncle taught me it. He's been in the tropical and marine fish keeping hobby for 47 years so he's seen this a lot. He also works in a garden centre in the fish health department so his advice is top quality.

Discus that go dark and don't eat are usually suffering from parasites. Give him a salt dip and then treat him with prazi pro. Hope you get that boy better

Jajajaja! You always crack me up homie. There's a lot of aggression in my tank at the moment, Big Blue is bustin ass and taking names. He doesn't like his new tank mates, as yet. I don't think he realises hay una chica bonita para el.

Maurice Aquariums
Maurice Aquariums - 9 years ago
+69bonesz You're right, and yes my discus weren't that stressed. Prob cuz I was following my own tips lol. They had no stress bars and were pretty colored up. You have a good eye. I like that.
69bonesz
69bonesz - 9 years ago
Yeah, It's the same way I do it, when I bought new fish, but not all people know this procedure, so always good to give this tips in a video!! I hope your nice Discus are getting along soon with the other fish, but they didn't look that stressed out, cause even in the bag they had their carrot colors shining nice :)
But always good when you know you got sensitive fish to be extra gentle, otherwise it's wasted money..

HaHa Thanks +69bonesz They do work well, esp for these very sensitive fish

Good idea I never give a sick fish full dose always half and the other half 12 hrs later. I been doing that for 40 years.
Another thing I like to do is add a few drops of prime into the bag of the new fish. If you ever test that water you will see its high in what I call ANN (Ammonia Nitrite Nitrate). Most of the time they take food right in the bag. Dont know if the Discus will take the food. You doing very good work Maurice.

Thank you +Ruben I'll take your advice, it has proved to be right most of the time . Thank you for the inspiration and kind words.
