that's alot of fish for a 40 gallon! i would be concerned about ammonia and high nitrates. It's probably ok since they are still small.

Yes, but only small ones now. I think when they get bigger they may eat the cardinals. I tried to increase the cardinal tetra amount, but it was survival of the fittest. I added 14 cardinal and one survived and then added 10 more and 2 survived, so now I have like 3 small ones that can take care of themselves with the other 6 medium size ones.
