90 Gallon Discus Tank Setup Pt.1 Filtration

First part of my 90 gallon tank build! Int his video I show you guys how I plumed the tank and what my filtration is. With Discus, water quality is extremely important to keep the fish healthy so an oversized filter is very important. In the next video I'll show the aquascape, lighting and adding the fish. Thanks for watching!

do you have carbon in your filter system by any chance? I just bought 6 discuss from a breeder and she told me not to use carbon filtration at all, is that normal? and why?

+rafivan39 She also may have suggested not using carbon with your discus because it has been attributed to "hole in the head" disease." It has not been proven, but circumstantial evidence shows that it may lead to the disease when coupled with slightly poorer water quality.

+rafivan39 Just to let you know i have a planted tank and i have carbon . For me i have so much nutrition in the water that the carbon does not strip it all out. I have even started a carpet in my tank along with all my plants growing rapidly fast! I am running two t5 ho  bulbs  along with a cascade 700 . For substrate flourite . uv sterilizer will definitely take the nutrition out of your water for sure . Algae usually happens too much left over nutrition with too much light or you dont have enough plants to take up all the co2 and nutrition before the algae can get to it . For me to solve this problem i  lowered the amount of time that my lights were on also i added a powerhead in my tank for increased water flow along with more plants !!!!

thanks, for the good advice, I do have lots of plants, and had no idea that with them I don't need to have carbon. would you say that I need a UV sterilizer instead of carbon filter? If I go to work and spend more than eight hours out of the house , since I don't have a timer my tank starts to get green, so I turn the lights out for a day and the filter does its thing quickly and I'm back to normal .

I don't use carbon on this tank because it is planted and the carbon strips away nutrients that the plants need to grow. You could use it for a non-planted tank though, it clears up the water

I like the stand. Was that an old wall unit or something you had built yourself?

I've had mine for about 5 months now. I got them from an experienced breeder ( who happens to be a small lfs). It would be good to get the discus from somebody else if they look nice and healthy, also the price would probably be better.

Looking good! Can't wait to see the discus in there! Where you you getting yours from? Or do you already have them? I'm still thinking Kenny's, if he gets what I want.I did have my favorite LFS contact me yesterday saying they had a customer wanting to sell their discus and wondered if I was interested. I told them to give them my info, but I haven't heard from them. Not sure if I would even want to go that route. Depends on what they are selling...
